Las revistas fueron un espacio arriesgado de información y opinión política en los últimos años del franquismo, lo que algunas pagaron con sanciones y suspensiones. Este libro analiza la aportación y la significación de la prensa no diaria como tribuna accesible a los movimientos de oposición, a manera de «parlamento de papel», término sobre cuyo alcance se habla en la introducción. Por una parte, se estudian algunas revistas anteriores al final de la dictadura, de neto enfoque renovador, como ‘Cuadernos para el Diálogo’ y ‘Triunfo’ o las catalanas ‘Destino’, ‘Oriflama’, ‘Presència’ y ‘Canigó’, junto al semanario informativo ‘Cambio 16’, en contraste con la inadaptación creciente de las veteranas ‘La Actualidad Española’ y ‘Gaceta Ilustrada’. Por otra, se encuentran revistas nacidas tras la jura del rey Juan Carlos, como el semanario popular ‘Interviú’, los comunistas ‘Arreu’ y ‘La Calle’, o ‘Punto y hora de Euskal Herría’, del nacionalismo vasco de izquierdas, y el proyecto valencianista ‘Valencia Semanal’. El capítulo dedicado a ‘Por favor’, ‘El Papus’ y ‘El Jueves’ ofrece una mirada global sobre el fenómeno de la renovación de la prensa de humor; así como el dedicado a los magazines angloamericanos ‘The Economist’, ‘Time’ y ‘Newsweek’ aporta una visión internacional de la Transición, no por distante menos incisiva. El libro incluye, además, el testimonio y las reflexiones de algunos periodistas, editores e historiadores. El epílogo apunta una interpretación sobre el efímero éxito de estas publicaciones en la que fue una gran década para las revistas.

This book is the first comprehensive account of the Argentine magazine Punto de Vista (1978–2008), a cultural review that gathered together prominent Argentine intellectuals throughout the last quarter of the twentieth century. Directed by cultural historian and public intellectual Beatriz Sarlo, the story of the magazine serves as a lens to study the evolution of Argentine intellectuals from the leftist mobilization of the 1960s through periods of military dictatorship and then the shifting politics of democratization in the 1980s and 1990s. The book argues that the way in which the Argentine intellectual left negotiated the political and cultural transformations of the late twentieth century can be understood as the history of two political defeats: that of the revolutionary utopias of the 1960s and 1970s and that of the social democrat project in the 1980s. Contestation of austerity includes not only traditional activism strategies such as human rights litigation and direct democracy instruments, but also new forms of collective action and collaborative resistance.
