In "Revolt in the Desert," T. E. Lawrence presents a vivid and granular account of the Arab Revolt during World War I, merging his personal experiences with a rich narrative style. Lawrence's prose blends the epic with the intimate, capturing the harsh realities of desert warfare, the complexities of the tribal politics, and the indomitable spirit of the Arab fighters who defied Ottoman rule. This memoir transcends conventional war literature, offering insightful reflections on colonialism, national identity, and the moral ambiguities of conflict, set against the mesmerizing backdrop of the Arabian landscape. Lawrence, often referred to as "Lawrence of Arabia," was a British archaeologist and military officer whose deep affinity for the Arab people and cultures influenced his perspective. His firsthand involvement in the revolt, coupled with his scholarly background in history and archaeology, imparts a unique authenticity to his narrative. His dual identity as both an outsider and a participant lends depth to his observations, allowing readers to engage with the nuanced dynamics of war and allegiance. Recommended for historians, literary enthusiasts, and anyone captivated by tales of courage and rebellion, "Revolt in the Desert" provides a compelling narrative that combines thrilling adventure with profound philosophical inquiry. Lawrence's reflections serve not only as historical documentation but also as an enduring meditation on loyalty and freedom, making it essential reading for those seeking to understand the complexities of the modern Middle East.

[World War One In The Desert Illustration Pack- Includes 92 photos and illustrations with 19 maps spanning the Desert campaigns 1914-1918] Lieutenant-Colonel T. E. Lawrence has often been pictured as many differing characters; crank, madman, genius, visionary, man “gone native”, pawn, military leader, highly strung, sensitive, arrogant. In fact even in his own writings he is a multi-faceted man of many talents and not a few failings; but what cannot be doubted is the importance of his actions during the First World War at the head of the Arab revolt in the Arabian Desert. At the time the Arabs were loosely affiliated, tribal and disunited; even the most senior Prince Faisal did not command uniform loyalty, and most firmly under the heel of the organized Turks of the Ottoman Empire. With the Turkish declaration of War against the Allies the British set about seeing if they could raise ferment and revolt on the long desert flank of their enemy. They sent the then Lieutenant Lawrence, a bookish classist and archaeologist but with knowledge of the area and the language of the Arabs, to be part of the British Mission. He had suddenly found his element among the Arabs who were captivated by his dashing inspired leadership as he led them from victory to victory over their oppressors. El Orens, as he was known to his men, became front page news in England and around the world, a merciful antidote to the long casualty lists from the mud of Flanders. Lawrence wrote of his experiences with the British military mission first as “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom”, but finding it to be a huge and cumbersome work, with many snap judgements that he had reason to regret, he edited his memoirs to form the more readable “Revolt in the Desert”. The result is a marvellous work filled with the action, hardship and privation of the desert campaigns that made him a legend as Lawrence of Arabia.

T.E. Lawrence, also known as "Lawrence of Arabia," wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph from his memories of serving as a liaison officer with rebel forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks (1916-1918). Possessed of a brilliant military mind and an unmatched knowledge of the region and the Arab people, Lawrence led the revolt alongside the charismatic Faisal I, sounding the death knell for the Ottoman Empire and paving the way for a new colonial power in the region: the British. Writing from memory after his original manuscript and detailed notes were lost, Lawrence was able to privately publish a polished version of his autobiograhpical account in 1922. It is from this edition that he created the abridged version in 1927 which would become a best-seller, titling it Revolt in the Desert. This important historic work vividly portrays one of the most turbulent periods in the history of the Middle East while offering rich insight into one of Britain's esteemed national heroes.

Edmund Allenby, Viscount Allenby of Megiddo and Felixstowe, as he became later, was the principal British military figure in the Middle East from 1917 to 1919. He fulfilled a similar proconsular role in Egypt from the latter year until 1925. In these two roles Allenby's eight years in the Middle East were of great impact, and in probing his life an especially revealing window can be found through which to observe closely and understand more fully the history that has resulted in the terminal roil afflicting the Middle East and international affairs today. In this biography Brad Faught explores the events and actions of Allenby's life, examining his thinking on both the British Empire and the post-World War I international order. Faught brings clarity to Allenby's decisive impact on British imperial policy in the making of the modern Middle East, and thereby on the long arc of the region's continuing and controversial place in world affairs.
