In Revolution and Repetition, Jeffrey Mehlman surveys the question of the relation between Karl Marx's writings and the institution of literature. He presents not an application of Marxian categories to literary texts, but a delineation of how the phenomenon of revolution in France is refracted through two divergent series of writings. The first comprises three works by Marx: The Class Struggles in France 1848-1850, The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, and The Civil War in France. The second consists of two exemplary nineteenth-century novels on revolution: Victor Hugo's Quatrevingt-treize and Honoré de Balzac's Les Chouans. Mehlman also explores the limits and opportunities of reading itself. Within a series of precise textual analyses, the reader will encounter Jean Laplanche's lectures on "anxiety" in Freud, Jacques Derrida's Glas, Georg Lukács’s study of Balzac’s “realism," and Michel Foucault's genealogy of prisons, Surveiller et punir. This volume is a working introduction to what may be termed French "post-structuralism." The purpose of this study is to examine what Marx, Nietzsche and Freud make of the idea of repetition, and how their concepts of repetition relate to what they perceive as problems of modernity, in a selection of their works. This thesis first looks at how teleology, a concept of time characteristic of the Enlightenment, faced competition from other temporal ideas like repetition during the nineteenth century, and the interrelationship between repetition, modernity's relentless aspiration towards newness, and memory as a means of mediating between past and present. Chapter 1 explains three different meanings of repetition for Marx: the recurrent use of the past in history for political purposes, the repeated failures of a proletarian revolution in France from 1830 onwards, which also poses the problem of modernity for Marx, and his rhetorical textual repetition as a means of inspiring proletarian revolutions. For Nietzsche, repetition plays a formative role in language and metaphysical entities. Chapter 2 explains how the bankruptcy of metaphysics results in nihilism, and how the eternal return upsets teleology, typically realized in the Christian assumption about sins and sufferings. Chapter 3 discusses how Freud assaults teleology by reversing the chronological order of a trauma and its ensuing neurotic symptoms, and how the compulsion to repeat, which seeks death, casts serious doubts on the supposed progress of humans the Enlightenment promises. Finally, the conclusion highlights the anti-foundationalism in the three thinkers' concepts of repetition in face of problems of modernity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The premise of this text propounds the arrival to radical change as starting with an admission of the unsolvability of crises and confl icts, and in considering any revolutionary act not as an answer to a problem, but the problematic idea itself. Rather than remaining caught in repeated patterns of true or false solutions, this text thinks revolution as the generator of radical otherness "to come," in opening up free spaces of unregulation which so loosen an arrangement as to allow for sensations of something new, other aff ects, and other precepts. The aim is to acknowledge the shortcomings of the current notion of revolution, and to rethink revolution as the genuine openness and spacing in the Heideggerian sense, without which surprises and future developments remain impossible. Such a rethinking is applied in terms of a Deleuzean reading of revolution. Deleuze is duly pertinent in order to read change as the being of becoming. Becoming corresponds to the notion of repetition: in the proper Deleuzean sense only through repetition that the new can emerge. Rethinking the idea of revolution, and thus taking the notions of difference and repetition as starting points, capacitates for presenting the possibility of true change, where revolution is considered outside of historical contingencies, and in terms of the virtual which in its actualization has no semblance, but a genuine creation. The text considers the revolutionary event as a creative process of deactualization present in the form of an opening up in both time and space. This process asserts the experience of creative diff erence, and thus the emergence of the truly new, by freeing the future from the limit of expected convergence present in historical contingencies, and as prefi gured by past and present events. What the spacing of the revolution attests to is creating space as the gathering site of the infinite intensitive multiplicities, singularities, and their diff erential relations, operating at an atemporal threshold moment, accompanied by a spatial bridging that diff erentiates as it leads. This is elaborated in this text by way of artistic, musical, architectural, poetic, and mathematical approaches.

What can the great crises of the past teach us about contemporary revolutions? Arguing from an exciting and original perspective, Goldstone suggests that great revolutions were the product of 'ecological crises' that occurred when inflexible political, economic, and social institutions were overwhelmed by the cumulative pressure of population growth on limited available resources. Moreover, he contends that the causes of the great revolutions of Europe—the English and French revolutions—were similar to those of the great rebellions of Asia, which shattered dynasties in Ottoman Turkey, China, and Japan. The author observes that revolutions and rebellions have more often produced a crushing state orthodoxy than liberal institutions, leading to the conclusion that perhaps it is vain to expect revolution to bring democracy and economic progress.
