Over the course of more than 22 years of service with the Federal government Nathan Gjovik has seen first-hand how it uses tools like affirmative action and various preferences and set asides to award positions, promotions, and contracts. These tools are nearly all designed to serve populations who the Government has deemed to be 'disadvantaged' while Caucasian males, who the Government has apparently determined as a class to be advantaged, are relegated to whatever they are able to muster on their own, outside the Federal sector. With the increasing proportion of Federal control of the US economy these tools determine in large part economic winners and losers within the US. These tools also indirectly impact how Federal laws are promulgated and enforced by program managers, many of whom were awarded their positions based primarily on their race or gender (or other non-merit based factors), determine how to best ensure the continuance of their program as well as the manner in which it will follow, enforce, or ignore Federal law. CAPT Nathan D. Gjovik, USPHS (Ret.) This book is an accounting of Mr. Gjovik's attempts to make positive changes from within the Federal government and the Federal responses to same. It also documents some of the asinine, incompetent, and potentially criminal activities which occur routinely within the Federal sector through the eyes of one who came from the private sector.

Many medical authorities predict that average life expectancy could well exceed 100 years by mid century and rise even higher soon thereafter. This astonishing prospect, brought on by the revolution in molecular biology and information technology, confronts policymakers and public health officials with a host of new questions. How will increased longevity affect local and global demographic trends, government taxation and spending, health care, the workplace, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid? What ethical and quality-of-life issues are raised by these new breakthroughs? In Coping with Methuselah, a group of practicing scientists and public policy experts come together to address the problems, challenges, and opportunities posed by a longer life span. This book will generate discussion in political, social, and medical circles and help prepare us for the extraordinary possibilities that the future may hold.

Basic biological research is not in trouble, but support for this cultural product is perhaps more fragile than it should be. We have developed, in this country, in Europe, and in Japan a triumphant record of research accomplishment that has rev olutionized our vision of the cell, the body, and the environ ment. The genetic code has been unraveled, the means of neuromuscular transmission have been elucidated, we know the fine detail of the cell's small geography, and we can de scribe the genes of mouse and man in chemical terms. But it is less clearly perceived by laity and scientist how this new revo lution in biology has been of use in the service of a better medicine or environment. The aim of this series of essays, which grew out of a symposium at the First International Congress of Cell Biology, is to instruct us all in the use that has been made of our new knowledge. In the fields of cancer, behavior, reproduction, genetic engineering, and environmental monitoring, practical results of our new knowledge are already apparent and more are just at hand. But neither the general public nor scientists working in their own narrow disciplines necessarily ap preciate these developments. Perhaps it is all just too new, too "experimental," to permit anyone to gain a proper perspective on what we have done or have the potential of doing.

Scientists are on the verge of a revolution in biomedical engineering that will forever change the way we think about medicine, even life itself. Cutting-edge researchers are working to build body organs and tissue in the lab. They are developing ways to encourage the body to regenerate damaged or diseased bone and muscle tissue. Scientists are striving to re-route visual stimuli to the brain to help blind people see. They may soon discover methods to enlist the trillions of microbes living in our bodies to help us fight disease. Learn about four strands of bioengineering—tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, neuroengineering, microbial science, and genetic engineering and synthetic biology—and meet scientists working in these fields.

Bio-nanotechnology is the key functional technology of the 21st century. It is a fusion of biology and nanotechnology based on the principles and chemical pathways of living organisms, and refers to the functional applications of biomolecules in nanotechnology. It encompasses the study, creation, and illumination of the connections between structural molecular biology, nutrition and nanotechnology, since the development of techniques of nanotechnology might be guided by studying the structure and function of the natural nano-molecules found in living cells. Biology offers a window into the most sophisticated collection of functional nanostructures that exists. This book is a comprehensive review of the state of the art in bio-nanotechnology with an emphasis on the diverse applications in food and nutrition sciences, biomedicine, agriculture and other fields. It describes in detail the currently available methods and contains numerous references to the primary literature, making this the perfect “field guide” for scientists who want to explore the fascinating world of bio-nanotechnology. Safety issues regarding these new technologies are examined in detail. The book is divided into nine sections – an introductory section, plus: Nanotechnology in nutrition and medicine Nanotechnology, health and food technology applications Nanotechnology and other versatile applications Nanomaterial manufacturing Applications of microscopy and magnetic resonance in nanotechnology Applications in enhancing bioavailability and controlling pathogens Safety, toxicology and regulatory aspects Future directions of bio-nanotechnology The book will be of interest to a diverse range of readers in industry, research and academia, including biologists, biochemists, food scientists, nutritionists and health professionals.
