"A massive, but little-known, facility in Cleveland, Ohio, played a vital role in the U.S. development of jets, in the training of NASA's first astronauts, and in making NASA's first missions beyond Earth orbit possible. Revolutionary Atmosphere tells the story of this obscure giant. Starting life in 1944 as the Altitude Wind Tunnel, it was the first wind tunnel that could study aircraft engines under realistic flight conditions; and it was enormous-in its original configuration, it could even accommodate full-size aircraft. The tunnel could not only simulate the high speeds of jet aircraft, like other wind tunnels, but could simulate the pressures and temperatures of higher elevation flight."--Publisher description.

The Altitude Wind Tunnel's (AWT) steel shell loomed, almost threateningly, over the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Glenn Research Center s main campus in Cleveland, Ohio, for over 60 years. The facility had been inactive since 1975, but the hulking tunnel sat in a conspicuous location between the visitors' center and the Icing Research Tunnel and was seen daily by hundreds, if not thousands, of people. The tunnel slowly ebbed from NASA Glenn's collective consciousness. Inside the steel shell, significant contributions had been made in the advancement of the jet engine and the high-profile Project Mercury and Centaur Program. Yet, the AWT had remained a mystery to most current employees and the public. Not only did the rusting giant have an obscure past, few even knew its name. This book, the accompanying Web site (http://awt.grc.nasa.gov), and other documentation have been created to resurrect the esteemed reputation of this once-vital and historically significant facility. The AWT's unrivaled capability to test full-scale engines in simulated altitude conditions advanced the development of the jet engine considerably during its formative period in the 1940s and in its maturity in the 1950s. The AWT was the nation's first wind tunnel built specifically to study the operation of engines. Its ability to consistently re-create flight conditions allowed researchers to systematically study engine behavior and perfect innovations such as the afterburner and the variable-area nozzle. Between 1959 and 1963 the AWT was slowly transformed into two large test chambers. The tunnel's simulated high-altitude conditions allowed NASA to cancel costly and time-consuming flight testing for Project Mercury. Afterward the tunnel was converted into one of the nation's first large vacuum chambers and renamed the Space Power Chambers (SPC). It was used to quickly remedy a number of problems for the Centaur second-stage rocket. The SPC tests allowed the Centaur to sustain its tight schedule for the Surveyor and later orbiting observatory missions. Use of the facility tapered off in the 1970s, and an effort to resurrect the wind tunnel failed in the early 1980s. After years of neglect, the tunnel was demolished in late 2008 and spring 2009. NASA's historical publications tend to focus on center histories, specific programs (particularly the human space program), or chronologies and other reference materials. The NASA Glenn Research Center has carved out a niche by writing the histories of several of its research facilities. The Icing Research Tunnel, Rocket Engine Test Facility, and Plum Brook Reactor have all been documented in recent years. These three books appear to be the only single-facility studies in NASA's historical collection.

Alexey is a Russian man on a trip of self-exploration. He never imagined that it would lead to danger and romance. Kate is an English woman with a passion for fighting the authorities. She never believed she'd have the chance to be part of history in the making. As two foreigners on holiday find themselves in the midst of a revolution, they discover the price of freedom and what it means to fight for your beliefs at any cost - even death. As they are dragged into a battle for democracy, they are forced to choose between love and their ideals. "Tahrir" is a fictional narrative about the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 and based on the real life experiences of the author at that time. Set in the midst of the struggle to overthrow Egyptian Dictator Hosni Mubarak, it's a story about people who strive for change and who protest against the authorities. It not only speaks of the struggle for freedom, but also of the many individual and differing lives that united to enable it. A love story is the pivotal part of this book. The love affair between a woman, who joins the revolution and is swept away by ideas to change the world, and a man, who is a firm believer in peaceful and evolutionary solutions to social conflicts, is tested by a turbulent sequence of events. Vivid descriptions of Egyptian nature, architecture, traditions, food, the Egyptian way of life and the revolutionary atmosphere and protests allow the reader to submerge themselves in this exotic country and be an intrepid traveller, witnessing unprecedented events. Meticulously researched and exquisitely written, hope and sadness, love and loss are intermingled in this book - a book that will make you laugh, cry and want to take to the streets - and will make you question everything you know and everything you hold dear.

How did the French Revolutionaries explain, justify, and understand the extraordinary violence of their revolution? In debating this question, historians have looked to a variety of eighteenth-century sources, from Rousseau’s writings to Old Regime protest tactics. A Natural History of Revolution suggests that it is perhaps on a different shelf of the Enlightenment library that we might find the best clues for understanding the French Revolution: namely, in studies of the natural world. In their attempts to portray and explain the events of the Revolution, political figures, playwrights, and journalists often turned to the book of nature: phenomena such as hailstorms and thunderbolts found their way into festivals, plays, and political speeches as descriptors of revolutionary activity. The particular way that revolutionaries deployed these metaphors drew on notions derived from the natural science of the day about regeneration, purgation, and balance. In examining a series of tropes (earthquakes, lightning, mountains, swamps, and volcanoes) that played an important role in the public language of the Revolution, A Natural History of Revolution reveals that understanding the use of this natural imagery is fundamental to our understanding of the Terror. Eighteenth-century natural histories had demonstrated that in the natural world, apparent disorder could lead to a restored equilibrium, or even regeneration. This logic drawn from the natural world offered the revolutionaries a crucial means of explaining and justifying revolutionary transformation. If thunder could restore balance in the atmosphere, and if volcanic eruptions could create more fertile soil, then so too could episodes of violence and disruption in the political realm be portrayed as necessary for forging a new order in revolutionary France.

From an acclaimed military historian, a bold reappraisal of young George Washington, an ambitious if reckless soldier destined to become the legendary general who took on the British and, through his leadership, defined the American character How did George Washington become an American icon? Robert L. O’Connell, the New York Times bestselling author of Fierce Patriot and The Ghosts of Cannae, introduces us to Washington before he was Washington: a young soldier champing at the bit for a commission in the British army, frustrated by his position as a minor Virginia aristocrat. Fueled by ego, Washington led a disastrous expedition in the Seven Years’ War, but then the commander grew up. We witness George Washington take up politics and join Virginia’s colonial governing body, the House of Burgesses, where he became ever more attuned to the injustices of life under the British Empire and the paranoid, revolutionary atmosphere of the colonies. When war seemed inevitable, he was the right man—the only man—to lead the nascent American army. We would not be here without George Washington, and O’Connell proves that Washington the general was at least as significant to the founding of the United States as Washington the president. He emerges here as cunning and manipulative, a subtle puppeteer among intimates, and a master cajoler—but all in the cause of rectitude and moderation. Washington became the embodiment of the Revolution itself. He draped himself over the revolutionary process and tamped down its fires. As O’Connell writes, the war was decisive because Washington managed to stop a cycle of violence with the force of personality and personal restraint. In his trademark conversational, witty style, Robert L. O’Connell has written a compelling reexamination of General Washington and his revolutionary world. He cuts through the enigma surrounding Washington to show how the general made all the difference and became a new archetype of revolutionary leader in the process. Revolutionary is a masterful character study of America’s founding conflict filled with lessons about conspiracy, resistance, and leadership that resonate today. Advance praise for Revolutionary “Given the amount of ink spilled over the years, it is not easy to offer a fresh look at George Washington’s leadership role during the war for American independence. But Robert L. O’Connell has done it in Revolutionary. The title announces the insight, which is the otherwise uncontrollable political and military energies released by the war that Washington was able to orchestrate.”—Joseph J. Ellis, author of American Dialogues: The Founders and Us

Sensing Art In The Atmosphere written by Sasha Engelmann and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-28 with Political Science categories.

This book engages artistic interventions in the aerial elements to investigate the aesthetics and politics of atmosphere. Sensing Art in the Atmosphere: Elemental Lures and Aerosolar Practices traces the potential of artistic, community-driven experiments to amplify our sensing of atmosphere, marrying attentions to atmospheric affect with visceral awareness of the materials, institutions and processes hovering in the air. Drawing on six years of practice-led research with artistic and activist initiatives Museo Aero Solar and Aerocene, initiated by artist Tomás Saraceno, each chapter develops creative relations to atmosphere from the studio to stratospheric currents. Through narrative-led writing, the voices of artists and collaborators are situated and central. In dialogue with these aerographic stories and sites, the book develops a notion of elemental lures: the sensual and imaginative propositions of aerial, atmospheric and meteorological phenomena. The promise of elemental lures, Engelmann suggests, is to reconcile our sensing of atmosphere with the myriad social, cultural and political forces suspended in it. Through tales of floating journeys, shared envelopes of breath and surreal levitations, the book foregrounds the role of art in crafting alternative modes of perceiving, moving and imagining (in) the air. The book ends with a call for elemental experiments in the geohumanities. It makes an important and original contribution to elemental geographies, the geohumanities and interdisciplinary scholarship on air and atmosphere.
