Excerpt from Revolutions in English History, Vol. 3 This volume brings my chosen labour to a close. No work of this nature has been written on English history. Its material is of course, to a large extent, the known material of the past, recast in accordance with my object. But it has not been my manner to take that material upon trust. My pages are the result of independent research, and of independent thought; and if my purpose has left me at liberty to pass over much to which large space has been assigned by our historians, it has required that many facts and influences which have been comparatively or wholly neglected should be brought out with distinctness and prominence. The new sources of information which are being laid open so freely to the historical student, make it imperative that the writer who would deal successfully with almost any topic in our annals, should bring to his subject a fair measure of contribution properly his own. Excerpt from Revolutions in English History, Vol. 2 In this volume, as in the volume preceding it, my object is not simply to enumerate causes and to discourse about them, but to present them along with the facts in which they exist as living influences. It is my wish that no other book should be needed to enable the reader to realize the purpose for which the present book is written. But my narrative is necessarily constructed on a principle of selection. Facts have their place in it from their relation to change and progress; and those so related in the greatest degree, are made the most prominent. In looking back on what I have written, I see that in the chapter on the reformed doctrine in England, before the meeting of the Reformation Parliament, I should have acknowledged my obligation to Merle D'Aubigne in pointing my attention to some facts connected with the life of Erasmus, with which I might not otherwise have become acquainted; and no writer can traverse the first half of the sixteenth century in our history in the time to come, without feeling indebted to the industry of Mr. Froude. Excerpt from Revolutions in English History, Vol. 1 In taking up such a theme as the Revolutions in English History, it is probable that no two writers would be agreed as to the best method of dealing with it-or as to the principle that should determine the selection of material, and where to stop. On these points, and on many beside, I have to throw myself on the candour of the reader. The course I have taken has been chosen after the best thought I could bestow on the subject. In the further prosecution of my object, I hope to avail myself freely of the rich material in the State Paper Office, still in manuscript, and which, thanks to the present Master of the Rolls, is becoming more accessible every day for the pur poses of history. Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 4 Very different was the activity and success of their oppo nents, the Democrats. The plan of subjecting all the pro perty and civilisation of France to their will, which they had first promulgated after the l0th of August, and again during the month of December, was now to be brought into full operation by the new ascendancy which this party had acquired through the trial and execution of the king. As the middle class in Paris kept entirely aloof from politics, the sectional assemblies were only attended by a handful of proletaries, who commenced their sittings late in the evening after work hours, and faithfully represented that sovereignty of the people, whose dicta - according. To the doctrine of the J acobins were to be a binding law on the Convention. Care was taken that there should never be any want of orators or exciting themes of declamation: discussions were carried on till late in the night, on the worthlessness of the ministry and the Gironde - ou the intrigues of the Emigres, and the traitors at home - and above all, on the starvation of the poor, the hard-heartedness of the rich, and the means of extermin ating usurers and monopolists. As many articles were made dear by the stagnation of trade and the mass of as signats, there was reason enough for complaint; and the exasperation was increased by the thought that goods existed in plenty, and that they only had a higher price put on them by the merchants, or were altogether withdrawn from the market, in consequence of the uncertain value of the paper money. And thus a fresh outcry was raised against their grinding selfishness and it was again demanded that the State should decree low and fixed prices, and punish those who refused to sell their goods. The word was passed from section to section; wherever any opposition showed itself it was immediately suppressed by a number of resolute Federes; and on the 12th of February the first of those storm petitions - which were so terribly to characterize the year. 1793 - was presented to the Convention. Commissioners of the sections and the Federes, warmly supported by Marat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the English Revolution, Vol. 1: From the Accession of Charles I IT may be asked why, after the many works that have appeared in England on the subject of which these volumes treat, it has been thought necessary to translate the present work. For an answer the reader is referred to M. Guizot's pre face, in which he gives his reasons for writing the book at all. There, after doing full justice to the merit of those authors who have enriched English literature with their views of this im portant period in the national life of their coun try, he shows that a complete history Of the English revolution is still found wanting, and that the French revolution having placed the events of 1688 in a new light, the narrative of Hume and other historians are no longer suffi cient to satisfy the present age. Excerpt from The History of England, Vol. 3 of 4: From the Revolution to the Death of George the Second; Designed as a Continuation of Mr. Hume's History I. IN the beginning of April, the duke of Cum berland began his march from Aberdeen, and on the twelfth passed the deep and rapid river Spey, without opposition from the rebels, though a detachment of them appeared on the opposite side. Why they did not dispute the passage is not easy to be conceived: but, indeed, from this instance of neglect, and their subsequent conduct, we may conclude they were under a total infatuation. His royal highness proceeded to Nairn, where he received intelligence, that the enemy had advanced from Inverness to Culloden, about the distance of nine miles from the royal army, with intention to give him battle. The design of Charles was to march in the night from Culloden, and surprise the duke's army at daybreak: for this purpose the English camp had been reconnoitred; and on the night of the fifteenth the High land army began to march in two columns. Their design was to surround the enemy, and attack them at once on all quarters: but the length of the columns embarrassed the march, so that the army was obliged to make many halts the'men had been under arms during the whole preceding night, were faint with hunger and fatigue, and many of them overpowered with sleep. Some Were unable to pro ceed; others dropped off unperceived in the dark and the. March was retarded in such a manner, that it would have been impossible to reach the duke's camp before sunrise. Excerpt from The History of the English Revolution The object of the work here introduced to the notice of the British public, is to trace the rise, progress, arid final completion of the English Revolution of 1688; to exhibit all the singular events of that important era, without the party-spirit of the English historians, on the one hand, or the tameness of the German, on the other; and, omitting all details not immediately bearing on the subject, to give a grand and faithful picture of one of the mightiest events in the history of the world. The high reputation of Professor Dahlmann justified the expectation that he would produce a work worthy of the subject. In the opinion of his own countrymen, at least, this expectation has been more than fulfilled. The History of the English Revolution was received in the most flattering manner, and was soon out of print. Excerpt from A General History of the World, Vol. 3 Popular Reaction against the Spirit of Conquest repro sented by Napoleon - The revolution of 1688 in England remained wholly English, so it did not leave its own island. The French Revolution was cosmopolitan. The members of the French National Assembly, not merely solicitous of the ancient liberties of the country, had the larger idea of rights common to all men united in society. Thus they placed the Declaration of Rights as a preamble to the Constitution of 1791. They thought of humanity no less than of France. This largeness of view constituted the grandeur and also the misery of the French Revolution. As a result the new order of things emerged from the past only with frightful throes.
