La "Romania", autrement dit la famille des langues romanes, constitue un laboratoire d'observation linguistique remarquable tant par la richesse de ses composantes et de leurs interactions que par l'abondance et la valeur des travaux qui lui ont été consacrés. L'analyse liminaire de cinquante manuels de linguistique romane parus entre 1831 et 2005 en français, allemand, italien, espagnol et anglais ouvre sur quatre parties de synthèse : les différentes langues romanes et leur variation à l'heure actuelle ; les structures et l'histoire interne des grands domaines (phonétique, grammaire, lexique) ; les facteurs évolutifs de l'histoire externe à travers deux millénaires de transformations (espace, contacts linguistiques, facteurs politiques et socioculturels, culture de l'écrit et variation linguistique) ; les éléments de méthode, mettant en relief la philologie et l'histoire disciplinaire, conçue comme une réflexion de type méthodologique. Deux points forts : d'une part, les études du français sont enfin intégrées dans le cadre évolutif romaniste ; d'autre part, la linguistique romane est présentée selon une logique interprétative actuelle : il s'agit de montrer la cohésion de la linguistique romane et, en s'opposant aux forces centrifuges qui la parasitent, de proposer un savoir partagé et équilibré.
