In recent decades the study of literature in Europe and the Americas has been profoundly influenced by modern critical theory in its various forms, whether Structuralism or Deconstructionism, Hermeneutics, Reader-Response Theory or Rezeptionsästhetik, Semiotics or Narratology, Marxist, feminist, neo-historical, psychoanalytical or other perspectives. Whilst the value and validity of such approaches to literature is still a matter of some dispute, not least among classical scholars, they have had a substantial impact on the study both of classical literatures and of the mentalité of Greece and Rome. In an attempt to clarify issues in the debate, the eleven contributors to this volume were asked to produce a representative collection of essays to illustrate the applicability of some of the new approaches to Greek and Latin authors or literary forms and problems. The scope of the volume was deliberately limited to literary investigation, broadly construed, of Greek and Roman authors. Broader areas of the history and culture of the ancient world impinge in the essays, but are not their central focus. The volume also contains a separate bibliography, offering for the first time a complete bibliography of classical studies which incorporate modern critical theory.

Up until the mid-1980s most pragmatic analysis had been done on spoken language use, considerably less on written use, and very little at all on literary activity. This has now radically changed. ‘Pragmatics’ could be informally defined as the study of relationships between language and its users. This volume, first published in 1991, seeks to reposition literary activity at the centre of that study. The internationally renowned contributors draw together two main streams. On the one hand, there are concerns which are close to the syntax and semantics of mainstream linguistics, and on the other, there are concerns ranging towards anthropological linguistics, socio- and psycholinguistics. Literary Pragmatics represents an antidote to the fragmenting specialization so characteristic of the humanities in the twentieth century. Cognitive Narratives Thematics proposes a new way in which narrative works organise their thematic material. It rehabilitates the study of what books are about by providing a cognitive narrative thematic model (CNT). Part I presents CNT by combining different approaches to narrative, such as evolutionary theory, semiotics, possible worlds theory, or rhetorical criticism. Part II applies CNT to a variety of well-known narratives in different modalities, such as Robert Browning’s "My Last Duchess", Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo, Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, Frank Miller’s 300, or Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. It also considers literary histories and digital humanities. Artefaktforschung beschäftigt sich mit dem existentiellen Problem, inwieweit die Ergebnisse empirischer Sozialforschung die gültige Widerspiegelung sozialer Realität darstellen. Ohne diese Gewißheit ist die soziologische Methode in Gefahr. Die vorliegende Arbeit reflektiert die »Herkunft« der Artefaktforschung und analysiert die Bestandteile des Fehlerbewußtseins und seiner Verarbeitungswege. Sie erstreckt sich über den Zeitraum vom Beginn der modernen empirischen Sozialforschung (ca. 1870) bis hin zu den jüngsten Entwicklungen.Die Arbeit gliedert sich nach der Einleitung in vier Hauptteile. Der zweite Teil klärt die »Problemgenese der Artefaktforschung in ihren wissenschaftsinternen und externen Bezügen« in drei Zeitabschnitten, der dritte liefert die »Analyse der Verarbeitung der Artefaktforschung«, der vierte bestimmt die Lage typischer »Artefakte im Auseinandersetzungsraum », der fünfte Teil faßt die Ergebnisse der Arbeit pointiert zusammen als »Der Beitrag der Artefaktforschung zur Kritik der empirischen Sozialforschung«.Die problemgenetische Reflektion erhellt die unterschiedliche Perzeption des Fehlerproblems: Des einen Fehler sind des anderen Gültigkeitsquelle, des einen Wahrheit ist des anderen Fehler. Daher kann die Artefaktforschung ihre Wirksamkeit nur bei Reflexion auf diese unterschiedlichen hintergrundtheoretischen Haltungen entfalten.Bei der Analyse der Verarbeitungswege der Artefaktforschung (dritter und vierter Hauptteil) wird dieser bis in die jeweils akzeptierten Artefakt-Definitionen unterscheidbaren Haltung nachgespürt. So lassen sich insgesamt drei hintergrundtheoretischunterscheidbare Strategien der Vermeidung von Artefakten identifizieren: Kontrolle, Umgehen und Akzeptanz. Das positive Ergebnis der Anreicherungsdiskussion der 80er Jahre ist, daß sich die hinter der unterschiedlichen Verarbeitung stehende paradigmatische Konfrontation in vieler Hinsicht selbst als ein Artefakt herausstellt. Denn, durch Anwendung der fehlerkritischen Diskussion auf die Forschungspraxis wird deutlich, daß ein Verfahrenswechsel alleine nicht für weniger Fehler bürgt.
