Color can be tricky when it comes to print versus electronics. Print uses ink to produce color, whereas electronics use light. Print uses a subtractive color model based on cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Electronics use an additive color model based on red, green, and blue. Due to these differences, print renders color differently in comparison to electronics. Vibrancy and color consistency between print and electronics will invariably differentiate. The degree of differentiation can range from a subtle shade to a different color altogether. There is no foolproof way to reconcile the color conundrum between print and electronics. The best solution to meeting color expectations between the two modes are hard copy color charts. The charts will not change the differences between the two modes. What the charts will do is allow a self-publisher to see how a color renders in print versus electronic sources. By knowing this, self-publishers can modify color choices to colors that will render acceptably well within both modes.

When is CMYK an appropriate color mode choice? When your main objective is to create for print publishing. Examples include the following: business cards, brochures, and paperback or hardcover books, to name a few. Most modern design software allows working in CMYK mode or incorporates a CMYK preview mode. However, even when working in CMYK mode, you are viewing an approximation of how color will appear on a printed end product. Light is producing the approximation, not ink. Generally, the actual colors on the printed product will vary in darkness and dullness. Thus, the need for hard copy color charts.CMYK Hard Copy Color Charts does not include shades. This book focuses on the most vivid and clear colors possible within the CMYK color range. Albeit, the gray scale chart utilizes black. The gray scale chart includes scaled values for flat black, cool black, warm black, and rich black.

As an illustrator, there are times I prefer using the HSL color model versus either RGB or CMYK when creating my illustrations. For artwork featured in books that sell equally well in electronic and print formats, RGB is a good choice. However, CMYK generally is better for artwork featured in books that sell primarily in print format. For creations viewed mainly on electronic sources, HSL is without question my preferred choice.Developed in 1978, HSL was George Joblove's answer to creating a color model more in line with how humans perceive color versus how electronic sources create color. As humans, we tend to think of the three primary colors-red, blue, and yellow-as the basis for all other colors. For example, combining blue and yellow for green; yellow and red for orange; red and blue for purple-the secondary colors. Additionally, when it comes to the lightness or intensity of color, we tend to think in terms of gray scale manipulation versus color combinations.Besides artwork to be viewed mainly on electronic sources, when do I prefer HSL over RGB or CMYK? When creating realism, establishing moods, retro pieces, and illustrations for children with color sensitivity, to name a few. Why? Ease of use for adjusting saturation and lightness--components utilized when creating these types of artwork. Why saturation and lightness are instrumental for these examples is an entirely different topic. The point is to show HSL may be better suited to particular compositions. RGB, CMYK, and HSL all have a place in my creative arsenal. Most printers require CMYK press-ready files when processing digital artwork. So, why create using HSL if the files sent are CMYK press-ready? As mentioned above, ease of use during the creation process. Secondly, even though the files are processed using CMYK, color renders differently on the end product when using a color mode other than CMYK during the creation phase. Using HSL intentionally manipulates how colors appear on the printed end product.

This booklet allows CreateSpace Community self-publishers to see precisely how a set of calibrated colors are rendered in a print-on-demand book produced by this provider. It contains the 139 unique SVG/X11 Named Colors, each with corresponding RGB decimal color codes, CMYK percentage values, and printed color samples/swatches. This can be a helpful tool for self-publishers who are using print-on-demand for a color project for the first time. By comparing the color swatches in this reference booklet to (a) the same colors as rendered by your computer, and (b) the same colors in a commercial printer's 4-color Process Guide for uncoated paper, you can see the degree to which any color shifts occur. This booklet also contains four professional color images (two photographs and two vector art pieces) to demonstrate the capabilities and limitations of the color digital presses used for print-on-demand books, plus a "test print" image showing CMYK and RGB color gradients in 1% steps on the front and back covers.
