This book explores the U.S. asylum process and how those seeking shelter deal with the rhetorical pressures of compelling asylum narratives they need to write in order to stay. Centered around a study conducted at a shelter on the U.S. border, this book moves beyond this context to demonstrate how liminal sites provide opportunities for displaced communities to employ distinct shared rhetorical practices of daily life—like silence and routine—that both safeguard vulnerabilities and enact agency for individuals within precarious spaces. Tricksters of Gotham explores the "trickster" tale through an in-depth look at Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. The trickster figure is an ancient and variable figure, versions of which populate the myths and folklore of many human cultures worldwide. Conceptualising the trilogy as a single aggregate text with a clear narrative arc, the author explores the variety of trickster figures present in the films and draws clear parallels with the surrounding social and political context. Departing from the central argument that the Batman trilogy shows a variety of trickster characters, even Batman himself, this book shows contemporary trickster figures to be rich and relevant cultural resources that can focus our attention on those elements of the social order that have become too rigid, hierarchical, or exclusionary. The author argues that they can model tactics for engaging with tricksters when they inevitably arise in civic culture, offering insights about how to manage interactions with these figures who can be both productively disruptive and potentially destructive. This book pays close attention to the characters portrayed in the Nolan Batman trilogy—not only the Batman and the Joker but the more minor characters as well—to discover what trickster-like tactics they may offer. In this way, the book intends to render these films as a sort of equipment for civic life and to encourage similar analyses of other contemporary cultural artifacts. The flashpoints of migration coming from the Northern Triangle (NT) of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras demonstrate the immense challenges facing the modern nation-state system. As the world’s population becomes more mobile, digitally interconnected, and more capable of giving voice to the individual self, the structures of society and governance that catalyze, exacerbate, and fail to meet gross abuses and inequalities are increasingly laid bare. Plumbing such insights and voices, this research presents a larger picture of migration that forces the reimagination of common narratives and outlines how nation-states can more intentionally interact cooperatively to negate a growing crisis.The perspectives offered in this work come from 40 interviews with migrants, law enforcement officers, journalists, film-makers, policy experts, vocational workers, shelter workers, migration lawyers, missionaries, academics, and nonprofits; people from the NT region, people from the US, people in the ivory tower and those who put their lives very much at risk on the ground. The work also examines 50,000+ news media articles from the US, Mexico, and the NT and over 50 policy briefs detailing challenges and possible solutions to mass irregular migration. The data collected cuts across political and economic borders in order to map out a comprehensive set of narratives addressing migration holistically. A unique aspect of the data is the inclusion of policy data in the analysis as its own distinct narrative vantage. It is our hope that the book informs better policies that help build more vibrancy and safety throughout the Americas.

This book focuses on the diverse tapestry of families in contemporary U.S. culture. Each chapter explores a different kind of family and examines their specific communication behaviors. We live in times of increasing diversity that complicate our understandings of ourselves as well as others who may be quite different from us. These complexities also impact our definition of "family" in addition to our interpretation of family communication behaviors. This book provides an examination of family communication practices in families that are underrepresented in the research of the discipline, and underserved in U.S. culture: immigrant families; family members in interracial relationships; LGBTQ families; low-income Latinx families; families with an incarcerated parent; and families headed by grandparents. The book is an initial effort to expand the lens of family communication scholarship to focus on "families on the margins". Through a variety of, sometimes unique, methods including textual analysis, in-depth interviews, and analysis of art projects collected at a Pride festival, each chapter in this collection adds to our knowledge of how we define family and how families communicate in the 21st century. Kuypers combines rhetorical theory and framing analysis in an examination of the interaction of the press and the president during international crisis situations in the post-Cold War world. Three crises are examined: Bosnia, Haiti, and the North Korean nuclear capability issue. Kuypers effectively demonstrates the changed nature of presidential crisis rhetoric since the end of the Cold War. Kuypers employs a new historical/critical approach to analyze both the press and the Clinton administration's handling of three international crisis situations. Using case studies of Bosnia, Haiti, and the alleged North Korean nuclear buildup in 1993, he examines contemporary presidential crisis communication and the agenda-setting and agenda-extension functions of the press. The importance of this study lies in its timeliness; President Clinton is the first atomic-age president not to have the Cold War meta-narrative to use in legitimating international crises. Prior studies in presidential crisis rhetoric found that the president received broad and consistent support during times of crisis. Kuypers found that the press often advanced an oppositional frame to that used by the Clinton administration. The press frames were found to limit the options of the President, even when the press supported a particular presidential strategy. This is a major study that will be of interest to scholars and researchers of the press, the modern presidency, and American foreign policy.
