Rhetoric is analyzed primarily through lenses that seek to understand and acknowledge the identities, ideologies, and practices present within a given situation--otherwise understood as the available means of persuasion. Instead, I argue that rhetorical critics should engage in praxis-oriented rhetorical criticism where the critic foregrounds their lived experience as part of their analysis. Utilizing methods advanced by autoethnographers and performance studies scholars, I posit that the praxeological critic manifest the relevant, critical positionalities that inform their analysis through critical dialogic reflexivity, the consensual-conflictual employment and theorization of self, and the use of criticism as critical-self-portraiture. As such, rhetoric and rhetorical criticism exist not only as a method of being, but as a way of becoming.

Human life is susceptible of changing suddenly, of shifting inadvertently, of appearing differently, of varying unpredictably, of being altered deliberately, of advancing fortuitously, of commencing or ending accidentally, of a certain malleability. In theory, any human being is potentially capacitated to conceive of—and convey—the chance, view, or fact that matters may be otherwise, or not at all; with respect to other lifeforms, this might be said animal’s distinctive characteristic. This state of play is both an everyday phenomenon, and an indispensable prerequisite for exceptional innovations in culture and science: contingency is the condition of possibility for any of the arts—be they dominantly concerned with thinking, crafting, or enacting. While their scope and method may differ, the (f)act of reckoning with—and taking advantage of—contingency renders rhetoricians and philosophers associates after all. In this regard, Aristotle and Blumenberg will be exemplary, hence provide the framework. Between these diachronic bridgeheads, close readings applying the nexus of rhetoric and contingency to a selection of (Early) Modern texts and authors are intercalated—among them La Celestina, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Wilde, Fontane.

Speaking to Good Effect introduces students to the ancient and ubiquitous art of rhetoric. Whenever we try to achieve something with words as our tools, we become rhetoricians. Whenever we respond – positively or negatively – to someone else’s words, we become rhetorical critics. It is, therefore, not surprising that the art of rhetoric has been studied and taught for more than twenty?four centuries.

This book offers a new approach to the principles and functioning of rhetoric. In everyday life, we often debate issues or simply discuss questions. Rhetoric is the way in which we answer questions in an interpersonal context, when we want to have an effect on those with whom we are communicating. They can be convinced or charmed, persuaded or influenced, and the language used can range from reasoning to the sharing of narratives, literary or otherwise. What is Rhetoric? provides a breakthrough in the field, offering a systematic and unified view of the topic. The book combines the social aspects of rhetoric, such as the negotiation of distance between speakers, with the theory of emotions. All the principal authors from Plato and Aristotle to contemporary theorists are integrated into Michel Meyer's "problematological" conception of rhetoric, based on the primacy of questioning and answering in language and thought.

We have many ways to deal with things, the biggest phobia is us, our insecurities. About what? About choice of decisions that reflect our nature. Nature being what we like but what about what God likes? That, it, is only liked if we are caring, our approach is reproach only if the consequences are bad, otherwise our approach should be contingency and adaptation, not evolution, but circumspect to conditions. We wish to live in the best condition, our mind and place where we are. To do this just understand the concept at hand; life! If we care people will care for us, this constitutes moral obedience to law. This book is about contemplation, the answers to the question herein are digest if and only if you agree to them, otherwise they are a cause for formalities against them being love, power, hope and joy. But generally all contemplations in their favor are regarded as social structures we create by caring and if not we are destroying.

Rhetoric S Earthly Realm written by Bernard Miller and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Sophists (Greek philosophy) categories.

Plato privileges the realm of absolute reality and truth above and beyond the world of language, discourse, and rhetoric. For Plato, earth harbors the facade of mere appearances and the evils of the bewitching powers of language. In RHETORIC'S EARTHLY REALM: HEIDEGGER, SOPHISTRY, AND THE GORGIAN KAIROS, Bernard Alan Miller counters this intellectual legacy with an innovative and thoroughly conceived theory of rhetoric, one concerned with "earth" in its Heideggerian aspect, complex and multifaceted, at the root of a phenomenology placing the focus on earth as the power of Being itself, whereby it is manifest purely as language. Here, earth means "native soil," a place of the "rootedness" of a people, where the forces of nature and culture are joined in language to constitute a community. In Miller's view, language is not only an ontological process comprising the very dynamic of our being but, more critical to RHETORIC'S EARTHLY REALM, it is a power whose rhetorical dimensions are most clearly apparent in the phenomenon of kairos. The concept of kairos-as espoused by the Sophist Gorgias-has an enigmatic dimension, being an instance of the "pre-Socratic mystery" and therefore bearing a much more mystical imprint than otherwise sanctioned in theories of rhetoric. It designates a "spontaneity" in the generation of language that, from the Platonic perspective, has discomforting similarities to processes of psychic intervention and poetic frenzy. Given the perspective of an "earthly realm," Miller attempts to retrieve a kairos true to the spirit of Gorgias, one where the pre-Socratic world view remains intact, allowing a more congenial ambiance for reimagining and appreciating Sophistic rhetoric. In RHETORIC'S EARTHLY REALM, the essential ingredients of Sophistic rhetoric are reconfigured or rendered anew, including concepts like doxa, apate, and techne. BERNARD ALAN MILLER teaches courses in writing, American Indian literature, and freshman composition at Eastern Michigan University. His research and publications have dealt primarily with rhetorical theory, with an emphasis on cross-cultural studies and the various connections between pre-Platonic and postmodern thought. He earned his PhD in 1987 from Purdue University."

Humility, Trauma, and Solidarity: The Rhetoric of Sensitivity enters a conversation in rhetorical studies about the agency, effectivity, and conditions of possibility for the rhetorical subject. This project is an exploration in several registers of the preoriginary affectability that Diane Davis has called "rhetoricity." Rhetoricity exposes existents to affection from outside in a structure of addressivity that is fundamentally rhetorical. Prior to individuation as a subject, rhetoricity implies that beings are differentiated first through response to an address or call. This extra-symbolic affection brings one into being as the subject of a rhetorical relation. This project aims to inscribe the valences of rhetoricity: its traumatic force, and even violence, but also its generation of the possibility for becoming otherwise. These valences are charted through chapters on reading and addiction, sensitivity, and identification in hypertext video games. In "Addiction, Humility, and Rhetoricity," I explore the uncontrollable relationality of addiction through a reading of David Foster Wallace's novel Infinite Jest. I argue that an addictive habit, even reading habits, indicate the radical affectability of the subject. Rhetorical exposedness is a route of access to one's interiority that cannot be totally blocked off. The next chapter examines the public controversy over the use of trigger warnings in college classes. "Sensitive Students" argues that students' experiences of trauma mark an exposition to affection that makes teaching possible. In the final chapter, "Twisted Together: Twine Games and Solidarity," I argue that a set of hypertext video games made by transgender women are contesting the dominant values of gamer culture. By confronting players with an alterity internal to identification, these games erode the centrality of identification to rhetoric and forward solidarity as a shared relation to difference instead. This project traces the ways that gender marks and even constitutes the rhetorical structure of address. Sensitivity, receptivity, and exposedness are sites of gendering marks that persist and reverberate into the very formation of the rhetorical subject. This project opens a way for rhetoricians to frame exposedness as a rhetorical moment of ethicity: as being outside oneself, being beside oneself, and being for others.

In The Realms of Rhetoric, contributors from a wide range of disciplines explore the challenges and opportunities faced in building a curricular space in the academy for rhetoric. Although rhetoric education has its roots in ancient times, the modern era has seen it fragmented into composition and public speaking, obscuring concepts, theories, and skills. Petraglia and Bahri consider the prospects for rhetoric education outside of narrow disciplinary constraints and, together with leading scholars, examine opportunities that can propel and revitalize rhetoric education at the beginning of the millennium.
