With an aging population, declining marriage and childbirth rates, and a rise in single households, more Japanese are living and dying alone. Many dead are no longer buried in traditional ancestral graves where descendants would tend their spirits, and individuals are increasingly taking on mortuary preparation for themselves. In Being Dead Otherwise Anne Allison examines the emergence of new death practices in Japan as the old customs of mortuary care are coming undone. She outlines the proliferation of new industries, services, initiatives, and businesses that offer alternative means---ranging from automated graves, collective grave sites, and crematoria to one-stop mortuary complexes and robotic priests---for tending to the dead. These new burial and ritual practices provide alternatives to long-standing traditions of burial and commemoration of the dead. In charting this shifting ecology of death, Allison outlines the potential of these solutions to radically reorient sociality in Japan in ways that will impact how we think about the end of life, identity, tradition, and culture in Japan and beyond.

Praise for Becoming Light “Prose and poetry, narrative and dream-like interludes vie with each other in a series of vignettes, charting the twists and turns of an amazing journey under the shadow of the Penal Laws. Nano emerges in stages as a bright and vivacious child, as a privileged young woman moving in royal circles in Paris, as one listening to the voices and influences which beckoned her to risk everything for the Reign of God, as Lady of the Lantern on the dark, impoverished streets of Cork. This novel successfully presents a portrait of Nano Nagle which is credible and inspiring. It is well-written and well-structured.” —Mary T. O’Brien PBVM, Ph.D. Department of Theology and Religious Studies, Mary Immaculate College/University of Limerick, Ireland “Barbara Ressler has taken a unique, creative approach to Nano’s life and spirituality in Becoming Light: A 21st Century Retelling of the Life of Nano Nagle. This original, quick-moving portrayal of Nano, her charm, simplicity, courage, and above all her steadfast love of, and trust in God, fills a void.” —Noela Fox, PBVM, Ph.D. Author of A Dream Unfolds, Wagga Wagga, Australia “Becoming Light: A 21st Century Retelling of the Life of Nano Nagle, by Barbara Ressler will be especially attractive to this century’s readers. The inventive interweaving of poetry and story in a fast-paced read leaves one wanting to know more about this daring woman called Nano, who challenged injustice with education and empathetic service.” —Maura McCarthy, Dubuque PBVM, Teacher and Missionary

Becoming Human written by J. Allan Mitchell and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-01 with Philosophy categories.

Becoming Human argues that human identity was articulated and extended across a wide range of textual, visual, and artifactual assemblages from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries. J. Allan Mitchell shows how the formation of the child expresses a manifold and mutable style of being. To be human is to learn to dwell among a welter of things. A searching and provocative historical inquiry into human becoming, the book presents a set of idiosyncratic essays on embryology and infancy, play and games, and manners, meals, and other messes. While it makes significant contributions to medieval scholarship on the body, family, and material culture, Becoming Human theorizes anew what might be called a medieval ecological imaginary. Mitchell examines a broad array of phenomenal objects—including medical diagrams, toy knights, tableware, conduct texts, dream visions, and scientific instruments—and in the process reanimates distinctly medieval ontologies. In addressing the emergence of the human in the later Middle Ages, Mitchell identifies areas where humanity remains at risk. In illuminating the past, he shines fresh light on our present.
