Excerpt from Rhodes in Ancient Times Much light has been thrown in late years on the ancient condition of Rhodes. Some three hundred and fifty inscrip tions have been found in the island since Hamilton found the first in 1837, and these have been published in collections of inscriptions and in the various archaeological journals. Large numbers of statuettes, vases, coins, gems, etc. Have also been found there within the last thirty years, chiefly in the excavations on the sites of Ialysos and Camiros and of some town near the modern village of Siana and the finest of these may be seen in the British Museum, the Louvre, and the Berlin Museum. But no complete statement has yet been attempted of the results derived from these new materials as well as from those previously accessible. "There is nothing like it on the market...no others are as encyclopedic...the writing is exemplary: simple, direct, and competent." —George W. Cobb, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Statistics, Mount Holyoke College Written in a direct and clear manner, Classic Topics on the History of Modern Mathematical Statistics: From Laplace to More Recent Times presents a comprehensive guide to the history of mathematical statistics and details the major results and crucial developments over a 200-year period. Presented in chronological order, the book features an account of the classical and modern works that are essential to understanding the applications of mathematical statistics. Divided into three parts, the book begins with extensive coverage of the probabilistic works of Laplace, who laid much of the foundations of later developments in statistical theory. Subsequently, the second part introduces 20th century statistical developments including work from Karl Pearson, Student, Fisher, and Neyman. Lastly, the author addresses post-Fisherian developments. Classic Topics on the History of Modern Mathematical Statistics: From Laplace to More Recent Times also features: A detailed account of Galton's discovery of regression and correlation as well as the subsequent development of Karl Pearson's X2 and Student's t A comprehensive treatment of the permeating influence of Fisher in all aspects of modern statistics beginning with his work in 1912 Significant coverage of Neyman–Pearson theory, which includes a discussion of the differences to Fisher’s works Discussions on key historical developments as well as the various disagreements, contrasting information, and alternative theories in the history of modern mathematical statistics in an effort to provide a thorough historical treatment Classic Topics on the History of Modern Mathematical Statistics: From Laplace to More Recent Times is an excellent reference for academicians with a mathematical background who are teaching or studying the history or philosophical controversies of mathematics and statistics. Children's literature is an excellent way to educate children, on everything from social behavior and beliefs to attitudes toward education itself. A major aspect of children's literature is the importance of books and reading. Books represent adult authority. This book examines the role that books, reading and writing play in children's fantasy fiction, from books that act as artifacts of power (The Abhorsen Trilogy, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Harry Potter) to interactive books (The Neverending Story, Malice, Inkheart) to books with character-writers (Percy Jackson, Captain Underpants). The author finds that although books and reading often play a prominent role in fantasy for children, the majority of young protagonists gain self-sufficiency not by reading but specifically by moving beyond books and reading.

Cut Copy Paste written by Whitney Trettien and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

How do early modern media underlie today’s digital creativity? In Cut/Copy/Paste, Whitney Trettien journeys to the fringes of the London print trade to uncover makerspaces and collaboratories where paper media were cut up and reassembled into radical, bespoke publications. Bringing these long-forgotten objects back to life through hand-curated digital resources, Trettien shows how early experimental book hacks speak to the contemporary conditions of digital scholarship and publishing. As a mixed-media artifact itself, Cut/Copy/Paste enacts for readers what Trettien argues: that digital forms have the potential to decenter patriarchal histories of print. From the religious household of Little Gidding—whose biblical concordances and manuscripts exemplify protofeminist media innovation—to the queer poetic assemblages of Edward Benlowes and the fragment albums of former shoemaker John Bagford, Cut/Copy/Paste demonstrates history’s relevance to our understanding of current media. Tracing the lives and afterlives of amateur “bookwork,” Trettien creates a method for identifying and comprehending hybrid objects that resist familiar bibliographic and literary categories. In the process, she bears witness to the deep history of radical publishing with fragments and found materials. With many of Cut/Copy/Paste’s digital resources left thrillingly open for additions and revisions, this book reimagines our ideas of publication while fostering a spirit of generosity and inclusivity. An open invitation to cut, copy, and paste different histories, it is an inspiration for students of publishing or the digital humanities, as well as anyone interested in the past, present, and future of creativity.

Excerpt from The Island of Roses and Her Eleven Sisters: Or the Dodecanese From the Earliest Time Down to the Present Day But in view of the immense amount of details and data accumulated for the writing of this book it was necessary to condense it, otherwise it would have developed into a voluminous work. In order to give my English readers the history of the Twelve Islands and the colour of their civilisation in a short but accurate form, I have thought it necessary to be briefer in some parts of the book than in others. For instance, leading events, such as the sieges of Rhodes, which have much bearing on its history and reveal the character of the people, have been made more prominent in these pages than have other less important matters. But those students who wish to go further into the sub ject will find fuller details and ampler information in the version of this book which I am now preparing in Greek. Excerpt from Cecil Rhodes: His Private Life In the following pages I have studiously avoided any reference to him in his capacity as Politician and Statesman. I have confined myself exclusively to reminiscences bearing upon his private life. I decided to record these as far as possible in chrono logical order, rather than to writing them down as they occurred to me. By following the former course I have been able to present a more or less coherent story, and readers will have the advantage of knowing approximately at any given place in the book with what period of his life I am dealing. Lincoln and Grant is an intimate dual-portrait of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant: their ordinary "Western" backgrounds, their early struggles to succeed, and their history-making relationship during the Civil War. Though generally remembered by history as two very different personalities, the soft-spoken Lincoln and often-crude Grant in fact shared a similar drive and determination, as this in-depth character study illustrates.
