The generalized areas of learning, memory, operant scheduled behavior, task performance, vigilance, mood and motivation and their rhythmic components are explored in varying detail. The particularized measures range from on-the-job errors, through reading efficiency to milliseconds of change in reaction time in the laboratory. The subjects range from ants to older persons. Across this range of settings, subjects, and behaviors, the message is clear: there is an interaction between time and behavior.

The fifth edition of Psychological Foundations of Musical Behavior appears at a time of continuing worldwide anxiety and turmoil. We have learned a lot about human musical behavior, and we have some understanding of how music can meet diverse human needs. In this exceptional new edition, the authors have elected to continue a “one volume” coverage of a broad array of topics, guided by three criteria: The text is comprehensive in its coverage of diverse areas comprising music psychology; it is comprehensible to the reader; and it is contemporary in its inclusion of information gathered in recent years. Chapter organization recognizes the traditional and more contemporary domains, with special emphases on psychoacoustics, musical preference, learning, and the psychological foundations of rhythm, melody, and harmony. Following the introductory preview chapter, the text examines diverse views of why people have music and considers music’s functions for individuals, its social values, and its importance as a cultural phenomenon. “Functional music” and music as a therapeutic tool is discussed, including descriptions and relationships involving psychoacoustical phenomena, giving considerable attention to perception, judgment, measurement, and physical and psychophysical events. Rhythmic behaviors and what is involved in producing and responding to rhythms are explored. The organization of horizontal and vertical pitch, tonality, scales, and value judgments, as well as related pedagogical issues are also considered. The basic aspects of musical performance, improvisation, composition, existing musical preferences and tastes, approaches to studying the affective response to music with particular emphasis on developments in psychological aesthetics are examined. The text closely relates the development and prediction of musical ability, music learning as a form of human learning, and music abnormalities, concluding with speculation regarding future research directions. The authors offer their latest review of aspects of human musical behavior with profound recognition of music’s enduring values.

Hearing In Time written by Justin London and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-09-02 with Psychology categories.

Our sense that a waltz is "in three" or a blues song is "in four with a shuffle" comes from our sense of musical meter. Hearing in Time explores musical meter from the point of view of cognitive theories of perception and attention. London explores how our ability to follow musical meter is simply a specific instance of our more general ability to synchronize our attention to regularly recurring events in our environment. As such, musical meter is subject to a number of fundamental perceptual and cognitive constraints, which form the cornerstones of London's account. Because listening to music, like many other rhythmic activities, is something that we often do, London views it as a skilled activity for performers and non-performers alike. Hearing in Time approaches musical meter in the context of music as it is actually performed, rather than as a theoretical ideal. Its approach is not based on any particular musical style or cultural practice, so it uses familiar examples from a broad range of music--Beethoven and Bach to Brubeck and Ghanaian drumming. Taking this broad approach brings out a number of fundamental similarities between a variety of different metric phenomena, such as the difference between so-called simple versus complex or additive meters. Because of its accessible style--only a modest ability to read a musical score is presumed--Hearing in Time is for anyone interested in rhythm and meter, including cognitive psychologists, musicologists, musicians, and music theorists.

Psychophysiological States written by David S. Shannahoff-Khalsa and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-11-08 with Psychology categories.

Our understanding of psychophysiological states are now more broadly defined by the inclusion of the lateralized ultradian rhythms of the autonomic and central nervous systems (ANS and CNS) that play a key regulatory role in mind-body states. These neural rhythms are a unique step in the evolution of the nervous system that have mostly been ignored or missed in our understanding of physiology, mental activities, brain rhythms, and in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The multivariate physiological experiments reviewed in this book provide a new “big picture for how the body’s major systems (ANS, CNS, neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, fuel-regulatory, gastrointestinal, immune) are regulated, integrated, and coordinated by the ANS via the hypothalamus during both waking and sleep. This discovery has implications for psychiatrists, psychologists, stress physiologists, cardiologists, sleep researchers, neuroscientists, neuroendocrinologists, cognitive scientists, and those interested in performance, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, autism, and addictive and impulse control disorders. This book includes the translational neuroscience aspect of this discovery, including implications for vagal nerve stimulation studies. This book is a study in Lateralized rhythms and Ultradian rhythms and their context in the ANS-CNS, a very new field Implications of these rhythms in Anxiety, Depression and Schizophrenia will be explored The book will present theories of possible causes for the assignment of causal mechanisms of these lateralizations The reader will understand the Nasal Cycle, the rhythmic; alternating side-to-side fluctuation in nasal airflow which is regulated by the ANS Unilateral Forced Breathing techniques will be discussed Vagal nerve stimulation and its effects will be discussed Yoga breathing techniques are analyzed and theorized scientifically
