Rhythmical Subjects written by Laura Marcus and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-23 with Literary Criticism categories.

Tracing a developing fascination with rhythm's significance, its patterns, and its measures, across philosophy, psychology, science, and the whole range of arts, Rhythmical Subjects shows how and why attention to rhythm came to serve as connective tissue between fields of inquiry at a time when modern disciplines were still in the process of formation or consolidation. The concentration on 'rhythm' and its cognates largely arose, Laura Marcus demonstrates, from the desire to reclaim or retain human and natural measures in the face of the coming of the machine and the speed of technological innovation. Rhythmical Subjects uncovers the disparate routes by which rhythm acquired its newfound ability to link ancient and modern forms of intellectual inquiry, and to fathom and re-invigorate temporal articulations of modern subjective life. Among the numerous intellectual and artistic developments set in a new light by this brilliantly wide-ranging book are: the long line of philosophical and theoretical writing on rhythm, from Nietzsche to Bergson and their twentieth-century interlocutors; psychological explorations of rhythm as the fundamental law of life, from Herbert Spencer and Ralph Waldo Emerson to Elsie Fogarty; more experimental engagements with psychology's rhythms, from Wilhelm Wundt, Théodule Ribot, and Karl Groos to the aesthetic writings of Vernon Lee; the history of prosody; pioneering applications of rhythm studies to social and sexual reform, by Havelock Ellis, Marie Stopes, D. H. Lawrence, and Mary Austin (among others); Lebensreform movements and the contribution of Rudolf Steiner and Emile Jaques-Dalcroze; and numerous endeavours in artistic and critical innovation, from the small modernist magazines of Bloomsbury and Paris to art salons and dance studios across Britain, Continental Europe, and America.

Written by an experienced drummer and philosopher, Groove is a vivid and exciting study of one of music's most central and relatively unexplored aspects. Tiger C. Roholt explains why grooves, which are forged in music's rhythmic nuances, remain hidden to some listeners. He argues that grooves are not graspable through the intellect nor through mere listening; rather, grooves are disclosed through our bodily engagement with music. We grasp a groove bodily by moving with music's pulsations. By invoking the French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty's notion of "motor intentionality," Roholt shows that the "feel" of a groove, and the understanding of it, are two sides of a coin: to "get" a groove just is to comprehend it bodily and to feel that embodied comprehension.

Rhythmic And Contrapuntal Structures In The Music Of Arthur Honegger written by Keith Waters and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-24 with Social Science categories.

This title was first published in 2002. Through analyses of a number of Honegger's compositions, including extended analyses of two of Honegger's orchestral works, "Mouvement symphonique No. 2 (Rugby)" and "Symphonie pour cordes", Keith Waters examines the principles of musical organization in Honegger's music and shows how these principles are based on systematic rhythmic and contrapuntal strategies. Musical form in Honegger's work, the book argues, is articulated by contrapuntal and rhythmic structures rather than by tonal structure, and it is this that provides the source of compositional unity in Honegger's music.

Rhythm is produced in "natural" as well as "cultural" ways. Natural rhythm is not controlled by man, no more than we can control the ebb and tide of the ocean, the rising and setting of the sun, the seasons of the year, or our own life cycle, heartbeat or breathing. But what man does with his body may become a cultural fact: the way we walk, work, dance, sing, make music and decorate objects. In music, rhythm is the organization of time in units. In visual arts rhythm refers to the arrangement of regularly recurring motifs. Rhythmic cycles in the music of the Islamic world are illustrated in the correspondences between the art of sound and the other arts: poetry and musical rhythms are related to geometrical patterns and calligraphy. In South Indian music, the analogies between rhythm, woven patterns and symbolic figures are striking. Weaving patterns reveal themselves as they emerge from the loom or unfold before the discerning eye, just as a listener delights in the patterns gradually perceived by the mind, and not merely received by the ear. The symbolic meanings of motifs and colors are an expression of the relation between man and the cosmos." Rhythm, A Dance in Time" explores all these aspects of rhythm: rhythm to be heard and rhythm to be seen.

Rhythm And Will In Victorian Poetry written by Matthew Campbell and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-04-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

In Rhythm and Will in Victorian Poetry, first published in 1999, Matthew Campbell explores the work of four Victorian poets - Tennyson, Browning, Hopkins and Hardy - as they show a consistent and innovative concern with questions of human agency and will. The Victorians saw the virtues attendant upon a strong will as central to themselves and to their culture, and Victorian poetry strove to find an aesthetic form to represent this sense of the human will. Through close study of the metre, rhyme and rhythm of a wide range of poems - including monologue, lyric and elegy - Campbell reveals how closely technical questions of poetics are related, in the work of these poets, to issues of psychology, ethics and social change. He goes on to discuss more general questions of poetics, and the implications of the achievement of the Victorian poets in a wider context, from Milton through Romanticism and into contemporary critical debate.
