"The text by Peter H. Hassrick and Elizabeth J. Cunningham draws on Blumenschein's papers as well as other archival sources to explore in depth the dimensions of his multifaceted life and his place in American history and culture. They examine his sixty-four-year artistic career, first as an illustrator and then a painter, revealing how his technique evolved and how his schooling and the artistic movements of his time informed his work. The authors demonstrate how Blumenschein's musical training profoundly influenced his painting, and they address issues overlooked in previous studies, such as Blumenschein's pivotal role in helping to preserve American Indian culture. Additional contributions by noted art historians focus on particular paintings, such as Superstition (1921) and Jury of the Trial of a Sheepherder for Murder (1936), and particular aspects of the artist's work, including modernism and his promotion of American Indian rights." "In Contemporary Rhythm shows that, far from simply a western painter, Blumenschein is a major figure in twentieth-century American art, bridging traditionalism and modernism. As the only book of its kind available on this influential artist, it is a major contribution to American art history. It is also a visual feast."--BOOK JACKET.

The Living Line written by Robin Veder and has been published by Dartmouth College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-07 with Performing Arts categories.

Robin Veder's The Living Line is a radical reconceptualization of the development of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American modernism. The author illuminates connections among the histories of modern art, body cultures, and physiological aesthetics in early-twentieth-century American culture, fundamentally altering our perceptions about art and the physical, and the degree of cross-pollination in the arts. The Living Line shows that American producers and consumers of modernist visual art repeatedly characterized their aesthetic experience in terms of kinesthesia, the sense of bodily movement. They explored abstraction with kinesthetic sensibilities and used abstraction to achieve kinesthetic goals. In fact, the formalist approach to art was galvanized by theories of bodily response derived from experimental physiological psychology and facilitated by contemporary body cultures such as modern dance, rhythmic gymnastics, physical education, and physical therapy. Situating these complementary ideas and exercises in relation to enduring fears of neurasthenia, Veder contends that aesthetic modernism shared industrial modernity's objective of efficiently managing neuromuscular energy. In a series of finely grained and interconnected case studies, Veder demonstrates that diverse modernists associated with the Armory Show, the SociŽtŽ Anonyme, the Stieglitz circle (especially O'Keeffe), and the Barnes Foundation participated in these discourses and practices and that "kin-aesthetic modernism" greatly influenced the formation of modern art in America and beyond. This daring and completely original work will appeal to a broad audience of art historians, historians of the body, and American culture in general.

The definitive retrospective on Ernest L. Blumenschein (1874-1960), one of the founders of the Taos Society of Artists and perhaps the most accomplished of all the painters associated with that organization. Reproducing masterworks from a new exhibit along with additional works and historical photographs, this volume forms the most comprehensive assemblage of his paintings ever published.
