Dopo il primo volume delle Ricerche Semiotiche, ecco il seguito, dove si com6pleta la pubblicazione dei materiali elaborati durante la stesura della Tesi di Dottorato. In questo secondo volume si approfondiscono i problemi legati ad una concezione della generatività semiotica come grande macchina che articola omologazioni tra livelli di pertinenza. A partire dal rifiuto del valore di una distinzione classica, quella tra sistemi di segni e sistemi di simboli, la semiotica strutturale può riconoscersi come retta da una logica delle omologazioni tra categorie, secondo un modello che ha preso col tempo il nome di semisimbolismo. Questo comporta una riconsiderazione dei meccanismi fondamentali che reggono, in una sorta di inaudita semplicità, la formazione stessa del senso; un “fondo del semiotico” che si svela come principio essenziale della distribuzione dei valori, fonte della significazione, logica delle trasformazioni e principio essenziale dell'analisi. Tutta la produzione discorsiva ne è coinvolta, in primis le strutture dell'enunciazione e il ruolo essenziale che la figuratività è chiamata svolgere nei processi di simbolizzazione.

A ventidue anni di distanza l'autore pubblica, riformulata, la prima parte della sua Tesi di Dottorato (Ricerche intorno alla razionalità semiotica, Università di Bologna) nella quale aveva proposto una lettura della semiotica strutturale e generativa di A.J. Greimas in una chiave fortemente condizionata dalle discussioni che si accompagnavano, soprattutto nella Francia del secondo dopoguerra, allo sviluppo dell'episteme strutturale, da un lato, e alla diffusione delle maggiori opere di E. Husserl, dall'altro. La semiotica generativa appare come una sintesi di straordinaria profondità sulla strada della costruzione di una forma di razionalità “a vocazione scientifica” come risposta all'esigenza di una adeguata descrizione dei fenomeni nelle scienze umane. Al cuore delle I discussioni emerge la paradossalità e al contempo la ricchezza della nozione di senso, vera dimensione sulla quale impostare una riflessione teorica e di metodo e, soprattutto, sulla quale provarsi a praticare un progetto scientifico innovativo: la messa a fuoco delle condizioni immanenti della significazione.
