Ricoeur, Hermeneutics and Globalization explores the philosophical resources provided by Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics in dealing with the challenges of a world framed by globalization. Bengt Kristensson Uggla's reflections start from an understanding of globalization as an 'age of hermeneutics', linking the seldom related problematic of globalization with hermeneutics through Ricoeur's concept of interpretation. The book proceeds to embrace lifelong learning as the emerging new life script of the globalized knowledge economy, the post-national 'memory wars' generated by the celebration of national anniversaries, and the need for orientation in a post-modern world order. The author argues that Ricoeur's hermeneutics provide intellectual resources of extraordinary importance in coping with some of the most important challenges in the contemporary world.

This collection of essays is dedicated to the prolific career of Paul Ricoeur. In his lifetime, Ricoeur made significant contributions to many fields, such as theology, aesthetics, narratology, linguistics, and of course, philosophy. Within philosophy alone, he engaged many currents of thoughts, always providing careful and faithful analyses of philosophers while adding his own unique perspectives. Many essays in this anthology revisit Ricoeur’s own works, carefully placing him in his philosophical context, while providing new interpretations of questions that mattered to Ricoeur, such as imagination, forgiveness, justice, and memory. Other essays, honoring Ricoeur’s own approach, bring him to dialogue with new questions, such as globalization, technology, and national memorials.

Ricoeur S Critical Theory written by David M. Kaplan and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with Philosophy categories.

In Ricoeur's Critical Theory, David M. Kaplan revisits the Habermas-Gadamer debates to show how Paul Ricoeur's narrative-hermeneutics and moral-political philosophy provide a superior interpretive, normative, and critical framework. Arguing that Ricoeur's unique version of critical theory surpasses the hermeneutic philosophy of Gadamer, Kaplan adds a theory of argumentation necessary to criticize false consciousness and distorted communication. He also argues that Ricoeur develops Habermas's critical theory, adding an imaginative, creative dimension and a concern for community values and ideas of the Good Life. He then shows how Ricoeur's political philosophy steers a delicate path between liberalism, communitarianism, and socialism. Ricoeur's version of critical theory not only identifies and criticizes social pathologies, posits Kaplan, but also projects utopian alternatives for personal and social transformation that would counter and heal the effects of unjust societies. The author concludes by applying Ricoeur's critical theory to three related problems—the politics of identity and recognition, technology, and globalization and democracy—to show how his works add depth, complexity, and practical solutions to these problems.

Hermeneutics And Phenomenology In Paul Ricoeur written by Scott Davidson and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-06 with Philosophy categories.

Hermeneutics and Phenomenology in Paul Ricoeur: Between Text and Phenomenon calls attention to the dynamic interaction that takes place between hermeneutics and phenomenology in Ricoeur’s thought. It could be said that Ricoeur’s thought is placed under a twofold demand: between the rigor of the text and the requirements of the phenomenon. The rigor of the text calls for fidelity to what the text actually says, while the requirement of the phenomenon is established by the Husserlian call to return “to the things themselves.” These two demands are interwoven insofar as there is a hermeneutic component of the phenomenological attempt to go beyond the surface of things to their deeper meaning, just as there is a phenomenological component of the hermeneutic attempt to establish a critical distance toward the world to which we belong. For this reason, Ricoeur’s thought involves a back and forth movement between the text and the phenomenon. Although this double movement was a theme of many of Ricoeur’s essays in the middle of his career, the essays in this book suggest that hermeneutic phenomenology remains implicit throughout his work. The chapters aim to highlight, in much greater detail, how this back and forth movement between phenomenology and hermeneutics takes place with respect to many important philosophical themes, including the experience of the body, history, language, memory, personal identity, and intersubjectivity.

Sartre and Ricoeur have never been compared in detail before, as hermeneutics and existentialism have been wrongly pitted against each other. The Aesthetics of Autonomy demonstrates that an existential hermeneutics overcomes the respective limitations of each philosopher and gives us the necessary tools of seeking autonomy in an age of uncertainty, which is the globalized world.

Science As A Quest For Truth written by Bengt Kristensson Uggla and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-01-05 with Science categories.

This book presents a unified theory of science by challenging some of the lingering myths and anachronisms associated with our understanding of what it means to be scientific. The book presents a new science narrative focused on the dialectics of discovering/inventing new worlds in an age of hermeneutics, and as an alternative to the prevailing view of the history of science as, largely, a confrontation between science and religion. It argues that the development of modern science is, in a complex way, intertwined with the history of the university, a knowledge institution that throughout the centuries has repeatedly managed to reinvent itself—so successfully, indeed, that it has paradoxically led to a fundamental crisis of identity today. The book suggests that, in order to recognize science as a quest for truth in a globalizing world of cognitive horizontalization, we need to transcend the false alternatives of objectivistic certitude (possessing “the Truth”) and relativistic resignation (“post-truth”) by means of a new focus on collegial practices.

Paul Ricoeur's Hermeneutics of the Imagination argues Ricoeur's development of the philosophy of the creative imagination is vital to Ricoeur's articulation of a critical hermeneutics. Herein lies Ricoeur's hermeneutical contribution to the philosophy of religion and the problem of interpreting primary religious texts that utilize plurivocal forms of language. Evans clarifies that it is through Ricoeur's studies of metaphor and narrative that he assesses and explicates the subversive power of the creative imagination in terms of the philosophy of language. Dr. Evans systematizes this theme of the philosophy of the imagination from Fallible Man, the early work of Ricoeur to the more recent publication of Time and Narrative.

Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) was one of the most prolific and influential French philosophers of the Twentieth Century. In his enormous corpus of work he engaged with literature, history, historiography, politics, theology and ethics, while debating 'truth' and ethical solutions to life in the face of widespread and growing suspicion about whether such a search is either possible or worthwhile. In Ricoeur and the Hermeneutics of Suspicion, Alison Scott-Baumann takes a thematic approach that explores Ricoeur's lifelong struggle to be both iconoclastic and yet hopeful, and avoid the slippery slope to relativism. Through an examination of the 'hermeneutics of suspicion', the book reveals strong continuities throughout his work, as well as significant discontinuities, such as the marked way in which he later distanced himself from the 'hermeneutics of suspicion' and his development of new devices in its place, while seeking a hermeneutics of recovery. Scott-Baumann offers a highly original analysis of the hermeneutics of suspicion that will be useful to the fields of philosophy, literature, theology and postmodern social theory.
