Il concetto di relazione è oggi un protagonista dei dibattiti metafisici, ma solo da poco la filosofia ha iniziato a prenderlo sul serio. Il saggio rappresenta la prima indagine estesa sul macro-evento filosofico che ha portato la relazione al centro dell’attenzione: il dibattito sulle relazioni interne ed esterne. Dopo averne rintracciata l’origine nell’intricato scontro dei primi anni del Novecento tra Francis Herbert Bradley e Bertrand Russell, esso segue gli sviluppi del dibattito in Ludwig Wittgenstein e Alfred North Whitehead, in Charles Sanders Peirce e William James, ne studia le riprese da parte di Jean Wahl e Gilles Deleuze, esplorandone infine le propaggini contemporanee in Bruno Latour e tra gli esponenti del realismo speculativo. Chiedersi se le relazioni siano interne o esterne significa porsi due domande distinte: le relazioni sono ontologicamente fondamentali o sono riducibili ai propri termini? Questi hanno un’esistenza e un’identità indipendente dalle relazioni o sono da queste definiti nella loro essenza più intima? All’intersezione di questi due interrogativi emergerà una concezione del mondo che vede affermato fino in fondo il ruolo ontologico delle relazioni quali agenti attivi del divenire e della sua complessità.

Riuniti due anni dopo la morte di James, essi costituiscono l’entrata privilegiata alla sua filosofia dell’esperienza, un luogo classico in cui pensatori di ieri e di oggi si confrontano con i problemi sollevati dal filosofo e psicologo statunitense. Questi saggi hanno avuto un’influenza duratura; possiamo ritrovarne un segno nella riflessione di coloro che con essi si sono misurati: Bergson, Whitehead e Russell, ma anche Deleuze e Putnam. Lo stile di James è chiaro e tagliente e il suo procedere argomentativo è accompagnato dal rigore che contraddistingue il suo pensiero.

Postfazione di Flavio Felice. Nel corso della storia, pur cambiando i sistemi, la vita politica è divenuta sempre più complessa. Con Machiavelli si è liberata dalla retorica e dal moralismo e ha rinunciato a darsi una direzione etica per divenire una scienza autonoma. La lettura gramsciana del Principe nelle fasi postbellica, post ‘89 e ancora oggi ha dato spessore culturale alla “conquista e al mantenimento del potere”, ma in mancanza di una bussola di orientamento i diversi leader e i partiti nei sistemi democratici hanno finito con l’assecondare rivendicazioni e desideri dei cittadini. Ha prevalso l’esaltazione del consenso ad ogni costo e di conseguenza il conflitto tra le parti e la decomposizione del tessuto solidale. L’opposizione del “popolo” alla “casta” ha favorito neopopulismo e sovranismo e sollecitato la trasformazione della democrazia rappresentativa nell’utopia della democrazia diretta, in cui il popolo detta le scelte attraverso i social in assenza di principi regolativi condivisi.
