Excerpt from Ricordi e Biografie LivornesiDi queste lunghe e pazientissime ricerche avrei potuto menar vampo di erudizione, e non mi sarebbe mancato argomento di molte citazioni e postille. Ma poiche io mi sono tale che libri simili a que sto ornati di frangie senza bisogno, mi hanno aria di ostentazione letteraria, il piu delle volte molesta ai lettori; ho creduto bene liberarmi, per quanto e possibile, dal faticoso manto delle note, 1a sciando che avvolga i margini polverosi dei Torrentini e degli Aldi: non cosi pero da vietarmi di produrre certe lettere inedite, e'certi curiosi e rari documenti, che adornano, corredano e non infarciscono il libro. Nella quale Opera ho usato di molta parsimonia, per non incorrere nel mal vezzo, oggi troppo seguito, di pubblicare fino gli scritti fatti a volo di penna e forse neanche riveduti dagli autori per gli usi della vita privata. Il Metastasio contro siffatti editori spietati usava dire, che sarebbe insulto e non favore lo strascinare a viva forza un onest' uomo in farsetto e berrettino da notte dalla sua camera in piazza.Qui Spero che troveranno la lor parte di lettura anche gli uomini di scienze e di lettere, di chiesa e di toga, i maestri, gli scolari, gli artisti, i soldati: poiche Livorno nel piccolo numero de' suoi esimj cittadini offre un esempio a ciascun ordine della vita sociale, si che in questo volume dovrebbe sentire ogni palato un po'di sapore, ogni stomaco un po' di alirnento; e se non temessi la lingua appuntata di qualche pedante, vorrei dire d'avere imbandita una mensa fru gale dov'e una pietanza per tutti.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
