Excerpt from Rifle Training for War The armistice is signed and peace is coming, but rifle training in peace is not different from rifle training in war. The one is reasonable preparation, the other immediate necessity. Both have the same object when we are considering military training. This training may be divided into two parts: First, the training of the individual; second, the training of the leaders and their units in collective fire. It is the purpose of this publication to treat only of individual training, and it will begin with a discussion of its theory and relative importance. Before the war there grew up a theory, based largely upon German precept if not propaganda, to the effect that individual rifle training was unimportant if not a military detriment. It was variously stated that "Expert riflemen will not make as many hits in war as will average shots;" that "Individual instruction should not be given at ranges greater than 500 yards;" that "Such training as the soldier receives on the target range plays but a minor part;" that "At 900 yards poor marksmen will obtain 10 times as many hits as good marksmen;" that "When the range is unknown the superior skill of the excellent marksman works to his positive disadvantage;" and that, firing in modern battle, is "often conducted at ranges of 2,000 yards or even more." Excerpt from Training for the Trenches a Practical Handbook Since the Great European War broke out, printing presses have been busy producing text books, handbooks and guides for soldiers. Military authorities and civilians alike have come to realise that this war has changed many of our old conceptions of strategy and that it has introduced conditions that are entirely unprecedented. New methods have had to be devised - sometimes on the field itself in the midst of the greatest difficulties - for meeting new and novel methods of warfare. Every deadly engine of destruction has called forth some new invention to cope with it. Soldiers have had to live and fight under conditions that to the lay mind, or to the mind of the military men of a few years ago, would seem to be impossible. It is reasonable to assume that the inventive genius of the world will be turned more and more in the direction of the problem of how to construct still more terrible machines of destruction. Excerpt from Training in Night Movements: Based on Actual Experience in War; Translated From the Japanese The importance of night movements and night attacks in the military operations of the present day is so generally recognized, that any discussion on that point would be more than superfluous. That the Japanese army, from the standpoint of practical experience, is best qualified to discuss such operations, would seem to follow as a matter also beyond discussion. For this reason it occurred to me that the translation of this work of a Japanese officer who was a company commander during the Japanese-Russian War, might, and I venture to say, does contain much that will be of interest and profit to our own service. Night movements are admittedly among the most difficult operations of war; the margin between victory and defeat is so small that it is a difficult matter to say to just what comparatively trivial reason success or failure may be due. Such being the case, it naturally follows that minute and painstaking training is absolutely necessary if success can be even hoped for.
