Between Rights And Responsibilities written by Hans Werdmölder and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Human rights categories.

The last decade has witnessed increased criticism of the classical human rights paradigm for its obsession with the 'culture of claims and rights'. According to its critics, this culture has led to an obsession with the rights of individuals at the expense of focusing on groups and communities worldwide, and moreover, neglecting responsibilities and duties. It is also argued that the Western emphasis on the rights of individuals should be overcome by paying more attention to the responsibilities of individuals and collectivities as represented in other cultures of the world, and several documents have been drafted to this effect. These discussions, and the ensuing documents, are far from only theoretical or abstract but are grounded in day-to-day realities, as the ongoing debates on globalisation, multiculturalism, terrorism, and the like clearly illustrate. This volume comprises ten original chapters that were presented for the first time at a colloquium held at the Faculty of Law of the University of Leuven (Belgium) back in 2006, and subsequently reworked and fine-tuned over the years. Part I sets the scene of the debate about fundamental rights and fundamental responsibilities, while in Part II the implications of an emphasis on responsibilities, duties and obligations are concretised in specific areas and through specific cases. This book cannot answer all the questions posed by the changing realities of rights and responsibilities in today's world, which is undergoing profound changes. However, it does aim to shed new light on important problems related to some of the major transformations occurring in European and Western societies and the ensuing changes in philosophical, political, social and legal thinking. It is therefore directed to academics, as well as policy-makers at various levels, the media and any person interested in a deeper understanding of new challenges for the modern world

The last decade has witnessed an increased criticism against the human rights paradigm for its obsession with the 'culture of claims and rights.' According to the critics, this culture has led to an obsession with the rights of individuals at the expense of due attention to groups and to communities worldwide, resulting in the neglect of responsibilities and duties. It is also argued that there should be a shift from the Western emphasis on the rights for individuals to more attention to the responsibilities of individuals and collectivities as present in other cultures of the world. Several documents have been drafted to this effect. These discussions, and the ensuing documents, are far from only theoretical or abstract. They bear consequences in everyday life as evidenced in a number of areas, such as globalization, terrorism, multiculturalism, etc. This book examines this important human rights debate.

This book was developed in association with the Cobden Trust to help students of 14-19 years learn about their rights and responsibil ities and understand something of the moral and legal concepts that underlie the law. It seeks to achieve these aims in three ways: by giving practical information about the law and about citizens' rights and duties; by encouraging debate on issues that concern rights and responsibi lities; and by developing in students the skills they will need to help them fi nd their way round the system as they grow up. The book has been tested and found useful on a wide range of courses: general studies, social studies, history, English and so on. The six chapters of the book are divided into short subsections, mainly of two to four pages. These contain a mixture of simple, clear explanations and short case studies, many involving young adults with whom students will readily identi fy. Explanations and case studies are followed up with suggestions for further fact-finding discussion and role play. Students are asked to put careful thought into these activities and to draw on their own experience whenever possible. This large-format book is illustrated with l ine drawings, cartoons, photographs, newspaper extracts etc. (ILEA catalogue).

A survey of the history of law of neutrality from its mediaeval roots to the end of the 20th century. The theme is the eternal clash between the rights of neutrals and belligerents - between the right of belligerents to defeat their enemies, and the right of neutrals to trade freely with all parties. Over the centuries, belligerent powers have devised various legal means of restricting neutrals from trading with their enemies, such as the law of blockade and contraband carriage. At the same time, neutral traders have done their best to evade and circumvent these restrictions. This book traces the evolution of state practice, together with the debates over the relevant doctrinal issues and the various attempts to reform and codify the law of neutrality.

"Social Rights and Duties" in 2 volumes is one of the best-known works by the English historian and humanist Leslie Stephen. This carefully crafted e-artnow ebook is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents._x000D_ Excerpt:_x000D_ "We are told often enough that we are living in a period of important intellectual and social revolutions. In one way we are perhaps inclined even to state the fact a little too strongly. We suffer at times from the common illusion that the problems of to-day are entirely new: we fancy that nobody ever thought of them before, and that when we have solved them, nobody will ever need to look for another solution. To ardent reformers in all ages it seems as if the millennium must begin with their triumph, and that their triumph will be established by a single victory. And while some of us are thus sanguine, there are many who see in the struggles of to-day the approach of a deluge which is to sweep away all that once ennobled life. The believer in the old creeds, who fears that faith is decaying, and the supernatural life fading from the world, denounces the modern spirit as materializing and degrading. The conscience of mankind, he thinks, has become drugged and lethargic; our minds are fixed upon sensual pleasures, and our conduct regulated by a blind struggle for the maximum of luxurious enjoyment. The period in his eyes is a period of growing corruption; modern society suffers under a complication of mortal diseases, so widely spread and deeply seated that at present there is no hope of regeneration. The best hope is that its decay may provide the soil in which seed may be sown of a far-distant growth of happier augury."_x000D_ Volume 1:_x000D_ The Aims of Ethical Societies_x000D_ Science and Politics_x000D_ The Sphere of Political Economy_x000D_ The Morality of Competition_x000D_ Social Equality_x000D_ Ethics and the Struggle for Existence_x000D_ Volume 2:_x000D_ Heredity_x000D_ Punishment_x000D_ Luxury_x000D_ The Duties of Authors_x000D_ The Vanity of Philosophizing_x000D_ Forgotten Benefactors
