This second anthology of Russian writing on Russian music begins in 1880 (where the first volume concluded) and ends in 1917. It brings the thoughts of leading Russian music critics to an English-speaking readership as they react to the Russian music that is new to them, during a period when all aspects of musical life were developing rapidly. Music criticism had become more sure-footed, if no less opinionated. These reviews demonstrate greater awareness both of music history and of contemporary music abroad. The period covers the late careers of Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov as well as late works by Borodin and Balakirev, and the emergence of Mussorgsky's compositions. Works by the intervening generation, including Arensky, Glazunov and Lyadov, are also reviewed and the book concludes with coverage of works by the Moscow School, including Medtner, Rachmaninoff and Skryabin and the early compositions of Stravinsky and Prokoviev.

This detailed account of the Kapella (Russian Court Chapel Choir) examines the influence it exerted on the development of Russian sacred music. The educational importance of the institution has always been overshadowed by the achievements of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire; Dr Dunlop investigates the consequences of the Kapella's monopoly on music publications. The wonderfully rich choral repertoire of the Russian Orthodox Church has, until now, been unavailable to most English-speaking choirs due to the problems of language and accessibility. Two volumes of Russian Court Chapel Choir music, Galuppi to Vorotnikov and Bakhmetev to Lyapunov , are available separately in performing editions. They are easily accessible sources of nineteenth-century Russian choral pieces by a range of composers, in a variety of styles. Carolyn Dunlop received a postgraduate degree in Russian language from the University of Strathclyde. She was awarded her doctorate in Russian Orthodox Church mu

Rosa Newmarch And Russian Music In Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Century England written by Philip Ross Bullock and has been published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Music categories.

Philip Bullock looks at the life and works of Rosa Newmarch (1857-1940), the leading authority on Russian music and culture in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century England. As an inveterate traveller, prolific author, and polyglot friend of some of Europe's leading musicians, such as Elgar, Sibelius, Janácek, Newmarch deserves to be better appreciated. Drawing on both published and archival materials, the details of Newmarch's busy life are revealed, followed by an overview of English interest in Russian culture around the turn of the century. The main focus of the book is on the themes that dominated Newmarch's engagement with Russian culture and society: nationalism, the role of the intelligentsia and feminism.
