Religion And Art In The Heart Of Modern Manhattan written by Aaron Rosen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-28 with Art categories.

"When you're in New York" the sculptor Louise Nevelson once said, "you're in perpetual resurrection." She might have said the same thing about St. Peter's Lutheran Church, set in the heart of midtown Manhattan. In the 1970s the church made a radical move, scrapping its neo-gothic building for a sleek modern structure in the shadow of a skyscraper. The transformation was not just architectural. Inside, Nevelson created a shimmering chapel, while over the years artists and designers such as Willem de Kooning, Kiki Smith, and Massimo and Lella Vignelli produced works for the sanctuary. This fusion of modern art, architecture, and design was complemented by an innovative jazz ministry, including funerals for Billy Strayhorn and John Coltrane, and performances by Duke Ellington and other jazz legends. For the first time, this volume examines the astounding cultural output of this single church. Just as importantly, the story of St. Peter's serves as a springboard for wider reflections on the challenges and possibilities which arise when religion and art intersect in the modern city. Working from a wide range of disciplines, including art history, theology, musicology, and cultural studies, a distinguished group of scholars demonstrate that this church at the center of New York City deserves an equally central place in contemporary scholarship.

The Church Of All Ages written by Howard A. Vanderwell and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-17 with Religion categories.

Many congregations today experience collisions between parents who ant to spend time with their children and age-segregated church programming, as well as between the children worshiping in their pews and the increasing number of seniors in the same pew. Among the questions these congregations struggle to address are these: Should we try to hold the generations together when we worship/ Is it even possible? Led by pastor and resource developer Howard Vanderwell, nine writers--pastors, teachers, worship planners, and others serving in specialized ministries--offer their reflections on issues congregational leaders need to address as they design their worship ministry. In addition, numerous sidebars illustrate the diversity of practices in the church today. Contributors do not propose easy answers or instant solutions. Rather, they guide readers as they craft ministries and practices that fit their own community, heritage, and history. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and group discussion, and an appendix provides guidelines for small group use. The thread that connects these varied contributions is the belief that there is no greater privilege for Christians than worshiping God, and there is no better way to do that than as an intergenerational community in which all are important and all encourage and nurture the faith of the others.

The Butterfly Effect An Annual Anthology Of Liberal Arts written by Ahmed Tahsin Shams and has been published by Blank Voices this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-09-30 with Fiction categories.

Blank Voices is a platform where you can get stories to share beyond any biases, stories of unsung heroes, stories without a voice, stories that inspire and transform. In the age of information, if stories are losing their meaning in generalization, in statistics, in summaries, and in the status quo, Blank Voices wishes to offer a safe place where speakers feel heard and understood. We welcome the participation of diverse people with diverse and dynamic perspectives through diverse media; be it poetry, paintings, sketches, installation art, live art, audio-visual, photography, and whatnot! The Butterfly Effect is planned to be an annual anthology of liberal arts, initiating from September 2022 as its baby step. The title refers to the tiniest significance of a motion that can turn out to be the mightiest force to create a cosmic revolution like the Big Bang! To share the voices from multiple disciplines of liberal arts, the book and the website (blankvoices.com) are designed with certain aesthetics. Therefore, this anthology is divided into four chapters: Verses, Voices, Visions, and Visuals. The first chapter, ‘Verses’, is the art of poetry where poets take the floor to provide readers a vibrant and vivid poesie ride! The second chapter, ‘Voices’, includes any sort of proses like short stories, interviews, letters, reflections, memoirs, anecdotes, travelogues, and so on. The third section, ‘Visions’, covers experimental media of artwork, painting, installation, crafting, and so on. The final chapter, ‘Visuals’, exhibits the audiovisual documented stories (in the website) and photo-stories (in this book) of life and love, of toils and joy! The idea of such an anthology publication came up during the first phase of the Covid 19 pandemic in 2020. Farzana Ahmed Julie, Co-Founder and Advisory Editor of Blank Voices, pitched the concept of its birth. Since then, the process has been on the sail, and here comes its first flight! Also, I’m grateful to the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC), University of Notre Dame, USA, and its inspiring team, my mentors, and colleagues where I literally experienced the beauty of cultural diversity that I attempted to reflect in designing the book. To give feedback on what kind of ‘voices’ to be shared or to be a contributor in the next anthology, I, Ahmed Tahsin Shams, Editor of this September 2022, welcome our readers and well-wishers to be connected throughout the journey: [email protected], [email protected]

The Butterfly King and Other Poems for Self Reflection rings clear with purpose - and is filled with poetry steeped in the act of self-reflection. Centered around the titular heroic epic poem, which is written entirely in rhyming couplets - the book is furthered broken down into several different sections, including nature and society, individual self-reflection, as well as love and sexuality. The poems within are designed to be poignant pauses in a chaotic world, a world often filled with fear, doubt, or injustice. This book should resonate with any who have taken the time to reflect on the world, either through lenses of light/dark, bad/good, or even self/other.
