Rio Diablo Murders spans four generations of the Wilson dynasty beginning with a young, illiterate teenager in Kentucky. The boy kills his abusive father and flees to join the Confederate Army. When Jefferson's best friend is killed in a Civil War battle, he deserts under the cover of darkness and journeys to Texas to join a Texas Cavalry unit. He falls in love with a ministers' wife who teaches him to read and write. After he commits another killing in Indian Territory, he is forced to leave the Cavalry Unit and returned to Texas. A dying thief tells Jefferson a tale of buried Double Eagles stolen from the US Army. Jefferson recovers the buried gold and establishes a 35,000-acre ranch on the banks of the Devils River, just north of Del Rio, Texas. Surviving Indian raids, floods, the Spanish flu and the loss of his first family in an Indian raid, Jefferson is killed at age 80 in a mystifying fall from a cliff. His surviving son, Jeb, attends Texas A&M University with the hopes of become a veterinarian. Hearing of his fathers' death, Jeb returns to run the ranch. Wounded twice in gunfights with rustlers and mob enforcers, Jeb survives to father a son late in life. Tracy, unlike his gentle father, has many of the violent characteristics of his grandfather. A top ten NFL prospect, his career is ended with a bullet to the knee. Several years later his enigmatic wife Amanda, disappears with several million dollars worth of the Double Eagles. When his daughter is killed and his grandson is critically injured, he takes out his vengeance on Coyotes who were leading illegal immigrants across the Rio Grande, in what the newspapers labeled "The Devils River Murders". With his mysterious friend, Tracy crosses the border in a final attempt to end the reign of a brutal drug lord who threatens his family.

Gear up for a High-Country Adventure in this classic western double by Gordon D. Shirreffs. In Rio Diablo, after his friend and fellow Ranger, Bass Burnett is killed, Vic Jamison reluctantly re-joins the Arizona Rangers as an undercover agent. His mission -to clean up the savage Rio Diablo country- a job that the army had given up on ten years ago. In a stubborn battle against cruel elements and even crueler men, he soon comes to realize why so many men died in pursuit of the same goal. . . and why his chances of survival are no better. In The Proud Gun, only one man's word is law. When former U.S. Marshall Les Gunnell arrives in Sundown, New Mexico, he soon discovers that it is not the same town as when he left. After his former deputy and friend, Will Ripley is brutally slain, Gunnell vows to find those responsible in this gritty-high country adventure. "The joy of reading Shirreffs' work is in his mastery of pacing and his tough, gritty prose." - James Reasoner, author of Outlaw Ranger.

From the Roman Praetorian Guard to the English shire-reeve to the U.S. marshals, lawmen have a long and varied history. At first, such groups were often corrupt, guilty of advancing a political agenda rather than protecting citizens. It was about the turn of the twentieth century that police officers as we know them came into being. At this time, a number of police reforms such as civil service and police unions were developed. Citizen committees were formed to oversee police function. About this same time, the technology of motion pictures was being advanced. Movies evolved from silent films with a limited budget and short running time to films with sound whose budget was ever rising and whose audience demanded longer, more complex story lines. From the infancy of moviemaking, lawmen of various types were popular subjects. Bounty hunters, sheriffs, private eyes, detectives and street officers--often portrayed by some of Hollywood's biggest names--have been depicted in every conceivable way. Compiled from a comprehensive examination of the material in question, this volume provides a critical-historical analysis of law enforcement in American cinema. From High Noon to The Empire Strikes Back, it examines the police in their many incarnations with emphasis on the ways in which lawmen are portrayed and how this portrayal changes over time. Each film discussed reveals something about society, subtly commenting on social conditions, racial issues and government interventions. Major historical events such as the Great Depression, World War II and the McCarthy trials find their way into many of these films. Significant film genres from science fiction to spaghetti western are represented. Films examined include Easy Street (1917), a nominal comedy starring Charlie Chaplin; Star Packer, a 1934 John Wayne film; The Maltese Falcon (1941) with Humphrey Bogart; Dirty Harry, a 1971 Clint Eastwood classic; Leslie Nielsen's spoof Naked Gun (1988); and 1993's Tombstone featuring Kurt Russell. The filmography contains a synopsis along with information on director, screenplay, starring actors and year of production. Photographs and an index are also included.

DEADLY QUEST When a top lieutenant in a notorious ring of human traffickers agrees to turn state’s evidence, Immigration and Customs Enforcement senior agent Sonia Knight believes she’ll finally take down the illegal operation’s devilish mastermind, Xavier Jones. But when an FBI sting on Jones’s criminal enterprise collides with an ICE stakeout, Sonia is enraged: Her informant’s life and her evidence are in grave jeopardy. FBI agent Dean Hooper has been chasing Jones for years on money-laundering and tax-evasion charges and doesn’t need or want a hot-headed ICE agent second-guessing his every move. When the Bureau is ordered to join forces with ICE, Sonia is just as livid: Her job is to save lives, not money. But their team effort pays off as fierce mutual resentment fades and passion flares–along with risk. For Jones is just one piece of a depraved puzzle, answering to an even more dangerous predator. Denied his expected prey, this pitiless fiend intends to make Sonia and Dean pay with their own blood.

In View from Mount Diablo, Class and racial privilege and the resentments they provoke underscore both turmoil in wider society and the relationships at the heart of the narrative, between Adam Cole, a dreamy white boy driven by personal tragedy to crusading journalism, squint-eyed Nellie Simpson, once a servant, then a political enforcer, and stuttering Nathan, gardener and groom turned cocaine baron. Beyond this trio is a dazzling array of real and fictitious characters. The annotated edition by John Lennard, Professor of British and American Literature at UWI - Mona in Kingston, allows the full scope of the verse-novel to emerge for readers unfamiliar with Jamaican history since the 1930s.

In 1938, Hazel Frome, the wife of a powerful executive at Atlas Powder Company, a San Francisco explosives manufacturer, set out on a cross-country motor trip with her twenty-three-year-old daughter, Nancy. When their car broke down in El Paso, Texas, they made the most of being stranded by staying at a posh hotel and crossing the border to Juarez for shopping, dining, and drinking. A week later, their near-nude bodies were found in the Chihuahuan Desert. Though they had been seen on occasion with two mystery men, there were no clues as to why they had apparently been abducted, tortured for days, and shot execution style. El Paso sheriff Chris Fox, a lawman right out of central casting, engaged in a turf war with the Texas Rangers and local officials that hampered the investigation. But the victims' detours had placed them in the path of a Nazi spy ring operating from the West Coast to Latin America through a deep-cover portal at El Paso. The sleeper cell was run by spymasters at the German consulate in San Francisco. In 1938, only the inner circle of the Roosevelt White House and a few FBI agents were aware of the extent to which German agents had infiltrated American industry. Fetch the Devil is the first narrative account of this still officially unsolved case. Based on long forgotten archives and recently declassified FBI files, Richmond paints a convincing portrait of a sheriff's dogged investigation into a baffling murder, the international spy ring that orchestrated it, and America on the brink of another world war.
