Este trabalho trata da problemática dos rios urbanos e das perspectivas atuais para a sua recuperação. O seu objetivo principal é discutir as propostas de renaturalização de cursos d'água degradados, o que se dá a partir da análise do plano para o sistema hídrico do Emscher, situado na região do Ruhr, na Alemanha. Trata-se de um caso emblemático de recuperação de uma condição de impacto profundo por meio de um processo que demanda décadas para a sua finalização. Por efeito da inversão de uma série de fatores econômicos, sociais, históricos e técnicos, as águas deste sistema passaram a ser tratadas com outro valor e vêm sendo recuperadas com metas ecológicas. As mudanças em curso no sistema do Emscher viabilizam a investigação de aspectos importantes do ponto de vista do estudo da paisagem e do ambiente, os quais, apesar de ocorrerem no tempo presente, possibilitam já auferir alguns resultados. Com isto, considerando as diferenças entre os dois países - Alemanha e Brasil -, o estudo oferece elementos importantes para a discussão dos problemas e das perspectivas para os rios das cidades brasileiras.

This book is about understanding, contextualizing and carrying out critical analyzes of the policies intended and/or implemented by the various public and private actors in urban public spaces, as well as the daily, or eventual, politics exercised by the organized civil society and by citizens. It presents a collection of contributions about the public space in different theoretical, conceptual and methodological approaches. Coming from different disciplines, the authors share an understanding about the need to analyze the uses and appropriations of the city by social subjects and groups as they represent difference and see the city as a place to share life experiences; as such, they argue, through their cases studies, that places of public use should be thought of and understood as concept and as social practice. As an analytic tool, the book offers a five-dimension model to explore how people relate to daily life activities and confront imposed inequalities in their meeting places, how they engage in individual and collective manifestations and/or how they symbolically appropriate public spaces in face of the late capitalism led by large corporations and globalization. Together the authors seek to contribute to a city of utopia, where all differences can be seen and dealt with in public spaces and where free individuals can present themselves and engage in a vita activa.

Esta obra resulta de um projeto internacional, desenvolvido em 4 países. Trata-se de uma versão em português, revista e abreviada, do livro “Acqua come patrimonio – Esperienze e savoir faire nella riqualificazione delle cita d’acqua e dei paesaggi fluviali” (organização de Romeo Farinella, editora Aracne, Roma). Está dividida em 3 partes. Numa primeira parte é enunciada a problemática. Na segunda parte, sob a forma de Atlas, é feito um diagnóstico dos 4 territórios. Por fim, na terceira parte, apresentam-se os 4 projetos de intervenção, consubstanciando ideias e propostas concretas para os territórios abrangidos pelo projeto. Inseridos em contextos muito díspares, sob vários pontos de vista, e enquadrados em escalas, também elas, muito diferenciadas, os 4 territórios são estudados e problematizados a partir de uma perspetiva comum. A água, sob as diversas formas em que está presente em cada um dos territórios, é encarada como um instrumento de planeamento urbano, de modo a facilitar abordagens metodológicas e a comparação de experiências que fomentem oportunidades de requalificação territorial a partir de intervenções baseadas na presença da água. This book is the result of an international project developed in 4 countries. It is a version, revised and shortened, in Portuguese, of the book "Acqua come patrimonio – Esperienze e savoir faire nella riqualificazione delle cita d’acqua e dei paesaggi fluviali" (Romeo Farinella, Ed., Aracne publisher, Rome). It is divided into 3 parts. The first part discusses the problematics. In the second part, taking the form of Atlas, we make a diagnosis of the four territories. Finally, the third part presents the four project proposals, consolidating ideas and concrete measures for the territories covered by the project. Inserted in very different contexts, from several points of view, and framed on scales also very different, the four territories are studied and problematized from a common perspective. The water, under the various forms in which it is present in each territory, is seen as an urban planning tool, in order to facilitate methodological approaches and the comparison of experiences suitable for opportunities of urban and landscape renewal based on the presence of water.
