For nearly twenty years, each day, one would hear or see in the news that a senior pastor has committed suicide, unexpectedly resigned, or was investigated for mismanagement of funds. As ministers of the gospel, we are expected to provide hope in a hopeless society. We are expected to express joy in times of sorrow. We are expected to be physically and emotionally stable, even in our hardships. So, what has gone wrong? What is happening to the shepherds of God's sheep? Rise and Fall of Pastors in the 21st Century takes the reader on a journey from God's intent for pastors to individuals responding to the call to ministry; from ministerial training to ministry expectations; from the pastor's family to ministry highs and lows; and it ends with the warning signs and the need for pastoral soul care. This book encourages pastors to identify the threats, recognize the warning signs, and seek soul care. is book causes parishioners to proactively and earnestly pray for their pastors. e Apostle Paul encouraged the church in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercession, and giving thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

The story of religion in the twenty-first-century West has been defined, in part, by the stories of once-zealous pastors moving beyond their faith to embrace a life of reason. But too often and too quickly ardent believers dismiss such accounts as aberrations and fail to consider the real-life implications for those who make this transition. Atheists and other skeptics, meanwhile, struggle to understand what took these individuals so long to make such a journey—and why others aren't lining up more quickly to do the same. As a result, the questions posed by one side inevitably mirror those asked by the other. Why do believers trust in God the way they do? But what factors lead atheists to dismiss religious beliefs so easily? How can believers have faith in the face of known science and history? But what allows anyone to be so sure their beliefs are based in reality? What would it take for believers to stop believing in God? But what would it take for nonbelievers to start to believe? Drawing on the author's own story as a former evangelical pastor powerless to stop his turn to atheism, The Rise and Fall of Faith touches on these and other questions, inviting readers into a long-overdue conversation between Christians and atheists. While the aim of the book is to initiate this much-needed discussion, the author encourages all who care about the future of humanity to carry the dialogue forward—whether in the evaluation of our own inner thoughts, in the assumptions we make about the other side, or in how we work together in the pursuit of understanding and common ground as we navigate the world's ever-changing and increasingly challenging religious and cultural landscape.

This important book is needed today. The challenges that Christian churches face have changed immensely in the last quarter-century. One of the central issues facing the churches everywhere in the world is their missionary presence in their nations and societies. The authors of this volume are among the world’s leading missiological thinkers and represent major Christian traditions in Europe, Africa, and North America. In this new century, the Christian church faces new situations that include, for example, the fall of communism; the globalization of culture; cultural and religious minorities and multiple religious majorities in nearly every country; ethnic and interreligious tensions; relativism and individualism in Western culture; the rise of a global impact of a postmodern world view; poverty in poor countries and in urban areas in wealthy countries; and the decline of Western cultural authority and, with notable exceptions, of religious authority generally. This book speaks of ways in which Christian churches are seeking to respond to these challenges. The purpose of this book is to describe some of the main challenges facing the churches in mission today, particularly with reference to inter-religious conversations all over the world. The title of this volume has been derived from the theme of the 24th General Assembly of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) at Accra in August, 2004 whose theme is, “That All May Have Life in Fullness.”

Many pastors today see themselves primarily as counselors, leaders, and motivators. Yet this often comes at the expense of the fundamental reality of the pastorate as a theological office. The most important role is to be a theologian mediating God to the people. The church needs pastors who can contextualize biblical wisdom in Christian living to help their congregations think theologically about all aspects of their lives, such as work, end-of-life decisions, political involvement, and entertainment choices. Drawing on the Bible, key figures from church history, and Christian theology, this book offers a clarion call for pastors to serve as public theologians in their congregations and communities. It is designed to be engaging reading for busy pastors and includes pastoral reflections on the theological task from twelve working pastors, including Kevin DeYoung and Cornelius Plantinga.

The Decline of Christianity and the Rise of the Pastor/Priests in America is built on the rock solid foundation laid by E. Gibbon''s History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It focuses on the historical subversion of Christianity and with that as a sledgehammer it smashes into the middle-class-on-up American evangelical leadership that serves as a lapdog to concentrations of corporate and political power. The Decline of Christianity demands first, above everything else, honesty. That the pastor/priests admit before God, conscience, and congregation that their lives have had nothing at all to do with New Testament Christianity, and because of that America''s evangelicals remain either poisoned or famished. Yet inspite of the nauseating conformity of religious leadership, the book remarks upon America''s more authentic expressions of servant leadership. It moves with the Biblical tide, that leniency is given for those who earnestly desire it, propelling one into the restlessness of faith (Luther), having remorse/confession/repentence as good shepherds. My Little Share of Authority The presbyter Vigilantius, firmly, though ineffectually, withstood the superstition of the monks, relics, saints, fasts, etc. for which Jerome compares him to the Hydra, Cerberus, the Centaurs, etc. and considers him only as the organ of the Demon (Penguin p. 355). I have never once said that I am a New Testament Christian, only that I am learning to become one, and there remains a wide gulf between it and me. If American pastors and priests want to contend they are more Christian than I am, then let them, and let Eternity decide the matter. But I hold a higher authority than they in two respects, in Socratic honesty and the Pauline. That I do not gloss over what the New Testament teaches (the pastors have, on the other hand, in front of their congregations, dedicated themselves to promulgating it), thus have not finessed the New Testament, but they did to pack their buildings. Of course my portrayal has not quite given me a promising career within the established American church. Yet I have freely chosen, voluntarily and as an adult, to live out certain crucial aspects of New Testament teaching, though it is equally true that I am really spineless, demonstrated by what I have left undone. This differs from middle class pastor/priests in four ways: 1) They will not admit and confess they are spineless 2) much of their Christian sacrifice, if any, was involuntary, a result of a difficult childhood etc. 3)What they call suffering for the truth is what the apostle Peter calls suffering for stupidity''s sake, like tax audits on large properties, being mocked for opposing reasonable birth control or ridiculed for real hypocrisy etc. 4) they purposefully confuse the suffering that is common to secular society with Christian trials, such as raising children being called the cost of discipleship, being unable to pay their high mortgages a trial of faith, etc. What I now say is boasting, I do not deny it, and may God forgive me for it. Yet I will take the risk and forge ahead with something I am compelled to do because of the condition that Christianity now finds itself in; rhetorical skill determines the cut of the Christian. While Dobson settles comfortably into a Colorado ski resort to write a new book (which evangelical readers await like the town band to provide background music to its arrival), I work a tent-making job (while Dobson collects a multi-million dollar settlement from Focus on the Family) in Eastern Europe, eking out a few minutes every day to try and get out another point of view. This while striving to save enough to give to the poor churches, personally and face-to-face, of the Middle East, Africa and India. I am quite prepared to measure the New Testament Christianity I have been led to pursue and for which I take no credit (like a wounded man on a horse that carries him home) against any middle class, media or megachurch pastor/priest in America. It boils down to who you are going to believe, which is of eternal concern for my reader. For if one chooses to follow a pastor whose whole life has been one long clever deception, then the reader will have died as he lived, a dupe who relied on his pastor''s false authority. Then he will indeed have a poor excuse before the Eternal. In my early twenties I recognized something was vitally wrong with the American church, though the thoughts were vague and inarticulate. In no way did I ever conceive of them as a revelation, but I knew I had to do something to balance the intellectual emphasis of the seminary with the Biblical reality of practicing one''s faith, which in my case meant teaching in a low-in-come neighborhood in east Los Angeles. There followed a course taught by a house church pastor where we looked at the New Testament demands of simplicity and a life lived within walking distance of each other. We knew these realities would help to drive out the two main idols within the American church, avarice (as seen through its holdings) and power (as seen by its silent and occasionally not so silent approval of evangelicals steering American politics). Then I saw my life''s task standing before me, to make Christianity as clear as possible by exposing the crimes of a false church leadership and by first making the gospel apparent to myself. This I could do by striving to live it out among those whom Christ spent the majority of his time with, from the poor to the common man to the sincere.

There is something missing in the church today. Stuck in a rut of routines and rituals, the church is caught up in doing what it is “supposed to do” but is lacking the true essence of what it is supposed to provide: life. Real faith--and a real relationship with Jesus--is not about playing by the rules, attending services, and praying before meals. Real faith is more than religion. Believing there is a way to breathe life back into the church, Tyler Edwards adopts a contemporary and entertaining metaphor--zombies--to highlight and challenge the problematic attitude of today’s believers.

There is no shortage of books these days on new ways of "doing church." New church models have been both warmly embraced and roundly criticized. What are church leaders and others concerned about the state of the church to make of all this? Does the Bible prescribe a standard model for doing church? Or is there freedom within certain guidelines? In A New Kind of Church, respected church consultant Aubrey Malphurs addresses these important questions and suggests that there is room for new ways of doing ministry while being true to Scripture. In the process, he offers a theological and interpretive framework for evaluating any church model, new or old. He also offers suggestions for implementing change in the local church.

This book can change your life. It provides information about the political behavioral practices in the governance of many church organizations and the spiritual implications of these practices. While it is about information, it is more about spiritual transformation in beholding and knowing Christ as your Model Leader. “Church Politics: Spiritual Lessons for 21st Century Leaders is a painful— excruciatingly painful, deeply troubling, disconcerting but necessary and cathartic read. There were points which brought tears to my eyes, as the graphic examples highlighted were all-too-familiar to me as a Pastor. No sensitive, reflective soul who reads this work can be untouched. This is a work which should be read by all Pastors and those in ministerial administration. It is urgent wake-up call to us in ministry. It is a prophetic work, delivered with a cogency that is as chilling as it is irresistible. None can emerge unscathed, thinking “Thanks God I am not like one of these persons!” Which itself would be incriminating evidence that “thou art the man.” Walker and O’Reggio have done a service to the Christian Church—of all denominations and hue. Read, weep, repent and resolve!” -Ian Boyne, Host of Religious Hard Talk, Television Jamaica
