On impulse, a child stops on the way home from school to pay a relative a visit; Robin’s great-grandmother lives on the 68th floor of a Chicago high rise. Lives? Or lived? And is it 68? Or 86? Out of a child’s confusion come a remarkable series of encounters between youth and age. K.P. Sandwell, now in her nineties, remembers something of her years in Rio—and relives a time in the late 1930s when she had moved from Winnipeg (“the Chicago of the north”) to Chicago itself, had tried to make a name for herself as an artist, and had found the world seeming to conspire against her. Robin relives again and again a tragic twist of fortune that cannot be changed. In the end, the story converges on the Art Institute of Chicago, where the child makes an extraordinary attempt to reverse another twist of fortune—one that befell K.P. more than sixty years earlier. Rising Stories is a sometimes wrenching, sometimes amusing, always thought-provoking novel about growing up and growing old; about hope and ambition; about cities and skyscrapers; about the world of the imagination and the world as it is; about love and desire; about what God or good may be; and about death and what we hope or fear may follow. Much as Rising Stories is extraordinary as a novel, this bound volume is extraordinary in a variety of other ways too. It includes an appendix of twelve fascinating short stories (as told by K.P to Robin) about the building of great skyscrapers. (Both in these short tales and in the novel itself, the text touches on the stories of skyscrapers in New York, Minneapolis, Seattle, various Canadian cites, the Middle East, and China and Malaysia as well as in Chicago; an index of buildings, architects, and engineers is included for ready reference.) The volume also includes a color portfolio reproducing twelve historic postcards of skyscrapers in Chicago, New York, and Seattle.

Using Nyonya beadwork as both a lens and an object of study, Hwei-Fe'n Cheah explores historical, social and cultural transformations in the Peranakan Chinese community. Phoenix Rising provides social scientists with tangible tools for examining concepts of modernity and tradition. For gender theorists, Phoenix Rising exemplifies the way time was used for beadwork and embroidery, thus crafting notions of Nyonya culture and identity. The reader is simultaneously taken on two journeys, the one pictorial, the other analytic, to learn about the changing ways in which meaning intersects with items of material culture---historically and currently. The combination is a visually and intellectually exciting example of multi-disciplinary research that is also aesthetically stunning. Pádraic Pearse, who played a prominent part in the 1916 rebellion, declared Ireland a Republic from the steps of the General Post Office in Dublin. He was executed, along with the other leaders, for his part in the Rising. But he was a gentle warrior at heart. These five stories show us that Pearse was a man of deep understanding with immense human awareness of the way of life of the average person. He analyses the sorrows and joys of the Irish people of his time, and writes of the tragedies of life and death from which they could never escape.

What funny and inspiring stories might you have to share, if you raised seven children and lived past 100? A winsome book for children of all ages, Mother Rising's Living Stories and Poems for Children is a charming set of tales and rhymes, influenced by many life observations, including antics from the growing-up years of her seven children. Bernice T. Rising ("Becky") started writing at quite a young age. Her long-time dream was to publish a collection of delightful stories for children everywhere to enjoy (including those who are young at heart). That dream has come true with this, her first book, published as she turned 100 years old. The wonders hidden within each tale are brought to life with rich illustrations (many done by her daughter, Ellen Rising Morris) and photographs of her own children dressed as some of the playful characters you will meet. This book is not just fastened by glue but is held together by morals and lessons that are creatively woven into each story. Becky warmly invites her readers to not only open the pages of her book, but to also open their imagination to the world of adventure and laughter, experiencing the lessons and wonders her stories reveal. Who could forget Patty and the "Tale of the Seven Powder Puffs"? or the misfortune of "Alibi Al"? "Bobby Bissell," with speed like a missile? the limerick fate of "Lily Boone" and her balloons? Mother Rising's Living Stories and Poems for Children are endearing and funny. You will wish for another 100 years' worth!
