How do people become informed about risk and why is this important? This book draws upon three case studies to interrogate risk’s informational thread, including how people map and orient themselves to risk information as well as how these activities shape their increasingly knowledgeable performance within a risk situation. This book offers a novel theoretical, methodological and practical approach for considering how risk responses are informed. As the first full-length treatment of this topic, the book provides insight into how people become knowledgeable about risk, including the various sources of information on which they draw and the social and political conditions that shape access to these information environments. In further centring developmental change, the book also sheds light onto the discontinuities that risk creates as well as the need to adjust to alterations in roles and responsibilities. Resulting in the production of a robust definition and conceptual framework for risk-informed information practice, the book’s broad approach, which involves a consideration of risk understanding alongside the more typical risk perception and management, further integrates reflection on the methodological implications of this work. The book’s focus on research and practice means that it will be of interest to risk and information professionals, including those with responsibility for risk messaging, information literacy instruction and patient interaction. The conceptual focus further means that this book will be invaluable for information literacy and risk scholars looking to extend their understanding of how people develop knowing when things of value are at stake.

The Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management's (EM) mission is the safe cleanup of sites associated with the government-led development of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. While many of these legacy sites have completed cleanup, the largest and most complex sites have not been fully remediated. The cleanup of these sites is proceeding under legally enforceable agreements with timelines for hundreds of milestones. EM is reviewing alternative approaches to increase effectiveness and improve cost efficiencies of its cleanup activities, especially for sites that will have residual contamination when active cleanup is complete. This report is the summary of two workshops convened in October 2013 and January 2014 on best practices for risk-informed remedy selection, closure, and post-closure control of radioactive and chemically contaminated sites that present significant difficulty for remediation to unrestricted release. The workshop series aimed to explore best practices that promote effective, risk-informed decision making and future opportunities to improve remediation approaches and practices. In the Workshop #1 section of Best Practices for Risk-Informed Decision Making Regarding Contaminated Sites, the report examines holistic approaches for remediating sites with multiple contaminant sources and post-closure uses, and approaches for incorporating a sustainability framework into decision making regarding site remediation, closure, and post-closure control. In Workshop #2, the report focuses on post-closure controls, assessment of long-term performance of site remedies, and best practices for risk-based remediation decisions.

This book is essential for anyone working in laboratories or workshops, as it provides crucial insights into safety measures, accident management, and first-aid procedures that are often lacking in institutional guidelines. Most institutions lack a collective manual or guidelines that inform individuals working in laboratories or workshops about safety precautions or how to deal with accidents that occur on the premises. This leaves a gap that may result in fatalities or collateral damage. Institutional and Industrial Safety Engineering Practices will provide insight into the safety measures that should be followed for the proper functioning of laboratories and workshops present in an institution. It will also help readers deal with any accident or fire hazard occurring on the premises and provide steps for first aid. After reading this book, readers will be able to comprehend the ideas and challenges linked to industrial safety, the incorporation of safety at the design stage to improve safety performance, and the analysis, prediction, and reduction of risks via the use of analytics and safety management. This book will also include safety key performance indicators used in various industries, which will assist readers in taking preventative measures at their workplace to avoid accidents. The rules of occupational safety and health management, which are responsible for preserving worker health and safety, are also covered.

The growing impacts of economic activities and climate change on the conditions of rivers throughout the world, require a new, integrated approach towards river basin management, an approach that can also cope with an uncertain future. In this volume, leading European scientists and representatives of major stakeholder groups present risk-informed management as this new approach, as developed in the European Commission-funded project RISKBASE. It aims to improve the ecological quality of river basins and thus to sustain the goods and services they provide for the benefit of society. Risk-informed management involves the integrated application of three key-principles: · Being well informed · Managing adaptively · Pursuing a participatory approach The authors explain and underpin these principles in detail, offer inspiring examples from practice and connect them to the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). This book is intended for scientists, consultants and practitioners concerned about river basins, world-wide, as well as the drafters and implementers of the WFD River Basin Management Plans.

Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety provides guidelines for industries that manufacture, consume, or handle chemicals, by focusing on new ways to design, correct, or improve process safety management practices. This new framework for thinking about process safety builds upon the original process safety management ideas published in the early 1990s, integrates industry lessons learned over the intervening years, utilizes applicable "total quality" principles (i.e., plan, do, check, act), and organizes it in a way that will be useful to all organizations - even those with relatively lower hazard activities - throughout the life-cycle of a company.

These FAO guidance materials were developed to support food safety risk managers and policy-makers in applying structured, evidence-informed processes to decision making. Food safety issues can have widespread impacts beyond public health. They may contribute to, or detract from the achievement of goals in areas including nutrition, food security, food trade and market access, economic and rural development. The risk analysis paradigm guides risk managers to ensure their decisions are based on an assessment of risks to health, and consideration of other factors in choosing the preferred risk management decision. The materials assist decision-makers in applying a multi-factor approach and is applied to two key decision areas – setting food safety priorities, and selecting risk management options. The principles and approaches can be applied to all food safety decisions. Case studies are included as examples of how to apply this decision-making process. Using this guidance will lead to improved food safety decisions, where decision-makers can demonstrate how evidence was used and any trade-offs made. It also facilitates stakeholder engagement, transparency and accountability throughout the decision-making process.
