Tra i generi classici della pittura, il ritratto costituisce una categoria a sé, non fosse altro per il fatto, come ha osservato Georg Simmel (1858-1918) nei suoi scritti sull’arte, che si tratta di un uomo che dipinge un altro uomo: “tutto l’uomo percepisce la totalità dell’altro”. Da questa premessa, quindi, possiamo dedurre che si stabilisce necessariamente tra i due soggetti un rapporto, un intreccio psicologico, che a volte può sottendere anche un’amicizia, una solidarietà , se non un nascente o preesistente legame amoroso (come spesso accade tra pittore e modella). Non sempre, ovviamente, e soprattutto nella pittura antica, quando l’alta committenza incaricava gli artisti per effigiare i personaggi di cui si intendeva trasmettere l’immagine per la storia.

Napoletano d’origine, a lui si deve il merito di aver introdotto in ambito romano le nuove poetiche del verismo storico, contribuendo al rinnovamento della pittura di storia alla luce delle novità diffuse da Domenico Morelli di cui il Celentano fu uno dei più validi seguaci.

Je me souviens, comme si j'y etais, de l'impression etrange qu'il me produisit, et il me fallut quelques instants avant de m'accoutumer au ton violace de cette peinture. Je l'ai revu depuis bien souvent, j'en ai meme fait une copie, et je m'explique un mot de M. Ingres, que je ne comprenais pas alors: C'est le temps qui se charge de finir mes ouvrages. Ce portrait a completement perdu l'aspect qui m'avait frappe, et voici pourquoi. Les laques dont M. Ingres 'avait l'habitude de se servir sont de peu de duree, la lumiere tend a les absorber; l'huile au.contraire jaunit, 'et ses peintures anciennement faites, en perdant leurs tons violaces et en prenant une teinte doree par l'action du temps sur l'huile, ont gagne, sinon comme couleur, du moins comme aspect general. Cela etait bien sensible a l'exposition ou figurerent les deux portraits dont je parle. Celui de madame de Vaucey avait l'apparence d'un portrait...

This co- publication of Archetype Publications Ltd with Schweizerisches Institut für Kunstwissenschaft (SIK-ISEA) is a collection of essays by an international group of scholars which provides access to an important chapter of technical art history: the rise in the popularity of temperas as an alternative to oil paints in Europe in the 19th and early 20th century. The term 'tempera' designated media that were generally water-soluble and which could include components as wide ranging as egg, gums, glues, soaps, waxes and resins. Revered as the technique of the ancients, it possessed both historical cachet and aesthetic and practical advantages, such as luminosity of colour, short drying times, and resistance to yellowing and cracking. Although interest in tempera paints was not limited to any one country, their industrial manufacture was concentrated in the region of present-day Germany, while in Italy a distinct tradition of artisanal production evolved. Developments in these two regions are surveyed, lending insight into the academic polemics surrounding temperas, the varied range of products on the market, their composition and their use by specific artists for easel paintings, murals and decorative schemes alike. Based upon source material, conservation research and technical studies of paintings as well as scientific approaches to the analysis of historical temperas, a vivid depiction of this complex artistic period emerges.
