Ritual In Deuteronomy written by Melissa D. Ramos and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-20 with History categories.

Ritual in Deuteronomy explores the symbolic world of Deuteronomy’s ritual covenant and curses through a lens of religious studies and anthropology, drawing on previously unexamined Mesopotamian material. This book focuses on the ritual material in Deuteronomy including commands regarding sacrifice, prayer objects, and especially the dramatic ritual enactment of the covenant including curses. The book’s most unique feature is an entirely new comparative study of Deut 27–30 with two ritual texts from Mesopotamia. No studies to date have undertaken a comparison of Deut 27–30 with ancient Near Eastern ritual texts outside of the treaty oath tradition. This fresh comparison illuminates how the ritual life of ancient Israel shaped the literary form of Deuteronomy and concludes that the performance of oaths was a social strategy, addressing contemporary anxieties and reinforcing systems of cultural power. This book offers a fascinating comparative study which will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students in biblical studies, classical Hebrew, theology, and ancient Near Eastern studies. The book’s more technical aspects will also appeal to scholars of the Pentateuch, Deuteronomy, Biblical Law, Ancient Near Eastern History, Mesopotamian Studies, and Classics.

"In no book of the Bible is exclusive fidelity to the Lord held up so insistently to Israel as it is in Deuteronomy. Moses speaks throughout, addressing the people on the threshold of the Lord's land on how they are to live as befits people rescued from Egypt. Israel's essence as a people, ever receiving the life-giving land, ever hearing the word of God through Moses, is unforgettably expressed. As noble as is the theme, however, readers unaware of the covenant background and rhetoric of the book are unlikely to be moved, and may even find the speeches repetitive and monotonous. To appreciate the freshness and power of the sermons, one must first understand how the book came to be organized into its present thirty-four chapters and how covenant traditions were shaped into perennially moving sermons." Ritual And Rhetoric In Leviticus

Ritual And Rhetoric In Leviticus written by James W. Watts and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-02 with Religion categories.

Ritual and Rhetoric in Leviticus uses rhetorical analysis to expose the motives behind the writing of the central book of the Torah/Pentateuch and its persuasive function in ancient Judaism. The answer to the question, 'who was trying to persuade whom of what by writing these texts?' proves to be quite consistent throughout Leviticus 1-16: Aaronide high priests and their supporters used this book to legitimize their monopoly over the ritual offerings of Jews and Samaritans. With this priestly rhetoric at its center, the Torah supported the rise to power of two priestly dynasties in Second Temple Judaism. Their ascendancy in turn elevated the prestige and rhetorical power to the book, making it the first real scripture in Near Eastern and Western religious traditions.

Word And Presence written by Ian Cairns and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Religion categories.

In this commentary Ian Cairns presents Deuteronomy as a slowly evolving, complex composite -- as legal code, as treaty text or covenant, as Moses' farewell speech, and as the final volume of the Pentateuch. Despite Deuteronomy's structural complexity, however, Cairns shows how the theme "Word and Presence" permeates the entire book: God is the living Presence who can be encountered and known through his word addressed to each generation in turn. This commentary is unique in its emphasis on the theology of Deuteronomy (e.g., law as "humane instruction") as well as in its modern applications and illustrations from non-Western cultures.
