Rival French Courts is a fascinating memoir of life at the French royal court in the late 18th century. The book provides an insider's perspective on the courtly intrigues, rivalries and scandals that characterized this turbulent period in French history. The author, a lady-in-waiting to several prominent French noblewomen, offers vivid descriptions of the glittering balls, elaborate fashions, and lavish meals that were a hallmark of the court, as well as the darker side of court life, including the cruel and capricious treatment of prisoners in the Bastille. Vienna And Versailles written by Jeroen Frans Jozef Duindam and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-14 with Architecture categories.

This book brings vividly to life the courtiers and servants of the imperial court in Vienna and the royal court at Paris-Versailles. Drawing on a wealth of material masterfully set in a comparative context, the book makes a unique contribution to the field of court studies. Staff, numbers, costs and hierarchies; daily routines and ceremonies; court favourites and the nature of rulership; the integrative and centripetal forces of the central courtly establishment: all are seen in a long-term, comparative perspective that highlights both the similarities and the distinctiveness of developments in France and the Habsburg lands. In the process, most conventional views of each court - and of court life in general - are challenged, and an alternative interpretation emerges. Finally, by relocating the household in the heart of the early modern state, Vienna and Versailles forces us to rethink the process of statebuilding and the notion of 'absolutism'.

Urban Rivalries In The French Revolution written by Ted W. Margadant and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-11 with History categories.

The reordering of France into a new hierarchy of administrative and judicial regions in 1791 unleashed an intense rivalry among small towns for seats of authority, while raising vital issues for the vast majority of the French population. Here Ted Margadant tells a lively story of the process of politicization: magistrates, lawyers, merchants, and other townspeople who petitioned the National Assembly not only boasted of their own communities and denigrated rival towns, but also adopted revolutionary slogans and disseminated new political ideas and practices throughout the countryside. The history of this movement offers a unique vantage point for analyzing the regional context of town life and the political dynamics of bourgeois leadership during the French Revolution. Margadant explores the institutional crisis of the old regime that brought about the reordering, considers the rhetoric and politics of space in the first year of the Revolution, and examines the fate of small towns whose districts and law courts were suppressed. Combining descriptive narrative with statistical analysis and computer mapping, he reveals the important consequences of the new hierarchy for the urban development of France in the post-Revolutionary era.

This was sufficient for the then gallant Henry, who immediately charged his ambassador, Sir Richard Wingfield, to declare 'that he would not for anything that the queen should be absent. Wanting her presence, he should then be lack of one great part of the perfection of the feast.' The 31st of May was then appointed for the meeting of the young monarchs of France and England. Charles being informed of this, hastened his departure from Spain. For while he, too, was anxious for a friendly alliance with Henry, he desired no less to defeat his rival's views of drawing England nearer to France by closer bonds of amity. As some French historians assert, and events seem to confirm it, Charles had outbid Francis for the services of Wolsey by larger pensions, presents, and, above all, the promise of his influence at Rome when the chair of Saint-Peter became vacant.
