Ce volume structuré en douze chapitres s’occupe des leaders des mouvements rebelles devenus politiques, un sujet qui est passionnant pour plusieurs raisons. D’abord, puisque malgré l’existence d’une littérature relativement développée portant sur les chefs de guerre, il y a assez peu de contributions qui traitent du devenir des anciens leaders rebelles après avoir pris leur distance avec le métier de maquisard. Puis, car il y a de plus en plus de militaires et d’anciens rebelles ayant récemment accédé au pouvoir dans des pays comme la Côte d’ivoire, le Tchad ou la Mauritanie et, encore plus récemment, la Guinée, le Mali ou le Burkina Faso. Enfin, puisque les constats sur la complexité et l’irrégularité du processus de transformation des anciens rebelles en leaders politiques se sont multipliés, en mettant en exergue de nombreuses variables qui le co-déterminent, comme, par exemple : le degré d’enracinement des organisations rebelles, la constance et la consistance de la conversion du maquis à la politique, les rapports ultérieurs des rebelles avec les anciennes factions, le rôles des acteurs externes et des processus de DDR dans la « normalisation » politique, la différenciation genrée des parcours post-rébellion.
