This thesis describes the distribution of dieback within the Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. (river red gum) population of the central Flinders Ranges, South Australia. This study was composed of three experimental sections. 1) The health of the E. camaldulensis population in the central Flinders Ranges was determined using a health rank classification. Two target areas were located within the study sites, one near surface water and the other approximately 1 km downstream, to identify if surface water is a factor in the health and vigour of E. camaldulensis trees. The health rank classification was based on tree canopy foliage and density. Trees were generally found to be healthier when located near surface water than those located away from the surface water. This did not occur at two sites which contained the most amount of water and may be due to this continuous supply of water in these areas. The trees at these sites may not go under as much stress as those individuals that have to deal with environmental extremes such as having water to having no water. 2) The girth of individual E. camaldulensis was measured to identify whether the size and age of trees are also a factor in their health and vigour. Mature individuals have a large tap root system which may be important in times of drought. There appeared to be no correlation between tree girth and overall health. 3) I identified whether aerial or remotely sensed images can be used to locate areas of dieback on a regional scale. Aerial photographs are currently the preferred monitoring method used by land managers and were an effective tool for assessing dieback. I concluded that a more appropriate method for land managers could be the development of an index for eucalypt health based on spectral data obtained from remotely sensed images.
