I grandi progressi che si credevano realizzati nel campo dell' allattamento artificiale, ribadirono sem pre piu questo concetto, tanto che l'allattamento materno si ve niva facendo sempre piu raro, e bastava il piu lieve disturbo, an che transitorio, perche da parte prima dei medici, e poi anche dei profani, si trovasse la ragione sufficiente per interdirlo. Il danno che si temeva dovesse venirne al bambino era di duplice ordine 1 la trasmissibilita. Della malattia da parte della madre, non tanto pel timore del passaggio di germi patogeni per la secrezione lattea, ma per il continuo contatto col focolaio morboso rappre sentato dalla madre; 2 pur prescindendo dal fatto infettivo, ed anche in malattie non infettanti, le alterazioni che il latte subi va, sia per deficienza ed alterazione dei suoi elementi costituenti nutritivi, sia per la presenza in esso di sostanze tossiche elabo.
