The Scientific Society Ludovico Quaroni was founded in Rome in 2010 as a tribute to Ludovico Quaroni, the Italian Master of Urban Architecture. Its purpose is “the study of the contemporary and historical city and architecture; the study of the design and theoretical works of the leading architects and scholars of architecture, the city and the territory”. To achieve these goals, the Scientific Society Ludovico Quaroni has founded the present electronic review, “L’architettura delle città – The Journal of the Scientific Society Ludovico Quaroni”. The title is a reminder of Ludovico Quaroni’s earliest book entitled L’architettura delle città (Ed. Sansaini, Rome 1939).

Ludovico Quaroni, romano, è stato un maestro dell’architettura italiana nella seconda parte del secolo scorso; il suo magistero ha contribuito a formare – oltre a tanta parte delle più giovani generazioni di architetti del nostro paese – Carlo Aymonino, Manfredo Tafuri, Antonino Terranova ed ha costituito uno dei fondamentali riferimenti dell’elaborazione teorica di Aldo Rossi sulla città. Architetto e urbanista, docente e scrittore, Quaroni rappresenta lo sperimentalismo metodologico e linguistico più aperto e inclusivo, la parte più progressiva dell’identità dell’architettura italiana moderna, fondata su uno stretto rapporto tra cultura storica, sensibilità sociale e contestuale, perizia scientifica del progetto e appassionata ispezione del futuro; coraggiosa, senza freni. Adottando il suo nome, dunque, la Società Scientifica, con la rivista che qui presentiamo, intende riprendere la discussione sull’Architettura delle Città in un momento nel quale metodologie, tecnologie, rapporti tra le scale di progettazione, significati e linguaggi formali e simbolici delle città, tutto ciò di cui la moderna cultura urbana occidentale sembrò, per un attimo, certa, sembra ormai travolto dalla vertigine della espansione urbana più veloce e imponente dell’intera storia dell’umanità, nei continenti più antichi e nei più nuovi.

“Vitruvius’s Migrations”, le “Migrazioni di Vitruvio” sono l’ideale continuazione del primo numero sul tema de “Gli ordini in architettura” da me curato per “L’architettura delle città”. Come recita il titolo, questo numero della rivista raccoglie una serie di contributi dedicati a quelle visite, incursioni, migrazioni in termini drammaticamente contemporanei, che l’architettura classica e la sua logica degli ordini compiono in campi diversi da quelli tradizionali, sia per diversità geografiche e di relativi ambiti culturali, sia per diversità di tecniche espressive, anche se orientate all’architettura, sia per occasioni eccezionali di intervento che sembravano escludere il ricorso a quegli illustri precedenti. Ma sempre, come ho messo in evidenza nell’editoriale de “Gli ordini in architettura”, il centro dell’interesse è “la ricerca di produzione di significato attraverso l’architettura”. E, come suo corollario, è la capacità della tradizione classica di farsi interprete e di dare risposta alle necessità espressive della contemporaneità.

Per quale motivo tutti, o quasi tutti, vogliono vivere in città? Le possibili risposte sono molte. Livio Sacchi, da architetto, è convinto che il principale motivo per cui le città piacciono così tanto sia sostanzialmente uno solo: in città ci si sente e si è più liberi che altrove. Affrancando le identità dei singoli dalle aspettative familiari e sociali e permettendo a chi vi abita di provare a diventare ciò che vuole, le città consentono qualcosa di molto prossimo all’autodeterminazione del proprio essere. Con uno sguardo critico rivolto alle migliori e alle peggiori soluzioni adottate nelle metropoli di tutto il mondo, Sacchi osserva il rapporto in continua evoluzione tra uomo e spazio urbano, provando a immaginarne gli sviluppi. A Parigi come a Tokyo, a Milano e Roma come a Delhi e a New York, parlare oggi di patrimonio culturale e architettonico, di centro e periferia, significa affrontare i temi della comunità e della cittadinanza, delle infrastrutture fisiche e digitali, di una inarrestabile globalizzazione e delle sue conseguenze. Questi cambiamenti sempre più veloci, apparentemente incontrollati, costituiscono una grande occasione per costruire un mondo a misura dell’uomo e delle sue potenzialità. Ma occorre che la politica, sia a livello centrale sia locale, operi pensando al bene comune, pianificando l’avvenire delle città in cui viviamo e, quindi, il nostro stesso futuro. Un futuro che si costruisce, insieme, nel tempo e che non è altro che il prodotto delle nostre azioni presenti e, soprattutto, della nostra capacità di progettare e innovare.

La parola inglese matter rimanda in italiano a un significato bivalente: oltre che materia, significa questione. L’ipotesi di fondo di questo lavoro di ricerca è di trattare l’argomento della materia spazio nelle sue accezioni alle scale dell’architettura e della città. All’interno del tragitto tra teoria e prassi viene trattato il tema dello spazio architettonico e urbano nella città contemporanea a partire da un’esperienza di formazione dell’autore presso lo studio del Premio Pritzker brasiliano Paulo Mendes da Rocha, una delle figure più interessanti ed enigmatiche del panorama architettonico internazionale attuale. All’esperienza pratica si innesta un ricco apparato di ricostruzioni progettuali e di questioni teoriche che forniscono al lettore una densa serie di spunti di riflessione utili alla pratica progettuale. Il carattere personale del volume, che si basa sulla premessa secondo cui ogni edificio comporta un articolato sistema di relazioni tra parti tettoniche e spazi interni ed esterni, rileva il ruolo specifico che l’architettura ricopre, nella contemporaneità, nella costruzione dello spazio architettonico e urbano. I riferimenti al mondo dell’arte, del cinema e della letteratura, diffusi in modo omogeneo in tutta l’opera, non la espongono, tuttavia, secondo Carlos Martí Arís, al rischio di «eccessiva sofisticazione, poiché sostenuta da uno sguardo in cui l’attualità degli strumenti analitici, non impedisce di considerare l’architettura come un grande compito, antico come il mondo».

Like any city, Asmara, a young city even by the standards of young African capitals, is a stage set where the drama of history has unfolded in the most intense and eloquent manner. The territory of Asmara stands at the edge of a space of almost mythical civilisations, ancient religions and proud empires. It is also a natural acropolis in the vastness of Africa, an astoundingly high crest that looks down from above on the coast of the “Eritrean” sea, coming to a halt where the Afar Rift expands and, year after year, rips into the heart of Africa where lions and gnus still roam free. However, in its body, and thus in its history, Asmara is also a fragment of Europe, imported atop the undulating highlands of Hamasien by the presumption of the most fragile and thus most presumptuous of colonial nations: Italy. Less than 130 years later history appears to have intentionally concentrated a host of events, projects, interests, delusions, conflicts and hopes in Asmara that, within the vaster expanses of historical time could have filled dozens of centuries. These metamorphoses were similar to immense waves lapping at a resistant soil, introducing and withdrawing diverse foreign armies, peoples, languages and cultures; and adversities. The results of so much labour have forged the identity of Eritrea, jealously defended for decades, and jealously guarded to this day. Looking carefully in libraries, among printed works dedicated to particular aspects of this identity – numerous and some very important – it is impossible to find a history of Eritrea that is scientifically complete and up to date. This is a serious shortcoming. Yet everything has remained impressed upon the land and, even more eloquently, on the city, on the face and limbs of Asmara. Hence the reconstruction, like that made by the author of this book, of the difficult process of planning the city signifies not only restoring, similar to an animation, the history of the complex growth of an urban organism. Lucio Valerio Barbera UNESCO Chairholder in “Sustainable Urban Qaality and Urban Culture, notably in Africa”, Sapienza Università di Roma At the end of the Thirties, from Naples to Massawa (the ‘Port of Empire’, since 1890 an important commer-cial base and natural access point for anyone wishing to reach Asmara and the Eritrean uplands), the voyage took five days; from the port one could reach the capital of the Colony by train, on an intrepid mountain rail-way, or by a motor road, Road n° 1 from Dogali – Asmara was only 120 km away. If one wanted to make the journey by air, it took three and a half days, thanks to the ‘Empire Line’, which involved taking a seaplane from the Carlo Del Prete base in Ostia to Benghazi in Libya, and then a plane to the Umberto Maddalena Airport in Asmara, with stops at Cairo, Wadi Haifa, Khartoum and Càssala, on the Sudanese border. And right next door to the Airport stood the Teleferica Massawa-Asmara, an extraordinary cableway for transporting goods up on to the plateau, at a height difference of 2,326 metres; the cableway had been built in two years, between 1935 and 1937, and at a length of 75 km, was the longest industrial cableway system in the world. It could move in one day the equivalent of thirty train loads, but it was at its full operational capacity for only a few years: in 1941 it was damaged in the war with the British, and ten years later, when Eritrea became a British Protectorate, it was unexpectedly decided to dismantle it. capital of the new country. These events act as a backdrop and form a solid framework for Tecle Misghina’s research – which is not only meticulous but emotionally involved – of which this book is a well-documented summary. Her research is important in that it reconfigures and puts in order various documents, both known and unpublished, in order to build up a chronology and an armoury of references that are indispensable for anyone wishing to carry out further studies on the Eritrean capital. For a project developed within a Doctoral programme, this is, in my opinion, the most important outcome of her research. The crisis of contemporary public space is a question of interest to all architects. The economic, social and cultural crisis, in particular affecting the entire European continent, is clearly and originally reflected in the public spaces of our cities, more and more of which are now considered “heritage”. Public space and the public realm, due to their original facets, are once again a theme of interest for architects, but also for philosophers, sociologist and anthropologists (J. Habermas, D. Innerarity, Z. Bauman, M. Augé), as complex “spaces” to be decomposed. Hence, a few questions: Does the analysis of public space and an approach to design, in a reality that considers a different concept of “public” than that of the pat century comport a new way of looking? A new urban-architectural nomenclature? An interdisciplinary approach to design? The general situation described in this publication, in various authors from different disciplinary backgrounds, clearly expresses the tangible need to provide (or provide once again) positive responses to different questions before proceeding with the design – or analysis – of contemporary public space.
