Collection Management written by John Kennedy and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The rapidly increasing reliance on digital rather than print-based resources has not diminished the importance of library collection management, but it has required significant modification in the thinking and the practice of collection managers, who today usually have to consider their clients' need for both print-based and digital materials. This updated edition aims to provide a concise overview of the major elements of contemporary collection management of print and digital resources - including policy formulation, selection, acquisition, evaluation, preservation, deselection, and cooperative collecting - in a way which aims to be of interest to the student and to any other reader seeking an understanding of a particularly dynamic area of librarianship.Much that has been previously published on collection management focuses on academic libraries, particularly those in North America. This book places greater emphasis on the experiences of smaller public and special libraries, and attempts to view its subject from the perspective of libraries in Australia and other countries geographically remote from North America and Western Europe. Dr John Kennedy has taught collection management at Charles Sturt University for over a decade and has produced several previous publications on the subject.

Current Legal Issues In Publishing written by A. Bruce Strauch and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Current Legal Issues in Publishing sheds light on important issues of the ever-changing, often-confusing world of copyright, licensing, and taxation as we move into the twenty-first century. You'll see how the questions of ownership, fair use, and licensing have become exacerbated by the fact that information is no longer static, but rather fluid and transportable. In an age of advancing technology, this book anticipates how Congress and the courts will be called upon with more and more frequency to maintain a balance between the copyright holder’s economic interests and society’s right to have access to information. Reading this book wil give you an understanding of the fundamental aspects and concepts of the Copyright Act--such as what constitutes an original work, for what categories copyright protection is available, and the basic rights of the copyright holder--and how they are being challenged in the digital world. The information and copyright landscape, as you will quickly percieve, becomes even more hazy in the context of the public library and university where special rights to information exist to facilitate learning and scholarship. Using this book as a tool, you will learn that because the future of the electronic age is unpredictable, copyright holders and university and library communities must work together to remain flexible and recognize the others’interests, particularly in the legislative arena. Comprehensive and informative, Current Legal Issues in Publishing looks at the copyright debate from many different perspectives, including from the creator, user community, and legal angles. Among the important topics you will read about are: the Uruguay Round Agreement the responsibility of copyright university ownership of faculty copyrights American Geophysical Union v. Texaco Inc. the Newark Morning Ledger Case library privileges and fair use legal aspects of electronic publishing on-line distribution rights As you read Current Legal Issues in Publishing and are introduced to the origins and development of copyright conventions, the measures taken to combat book piracy, and the conflict between industrial nations and developing ones over copyright issues, you will form your own conclusions to the arguments for and against the current worldwide copyright system. You will also see that questions of ownership and economic and market rights are inextricably linked with questions of power and who can or cannot have access to information.

Brief Tests Of Collection Strength written by Howard D. White and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-09-26 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

For purposes of accreditation, resource sharing, and institutional mission, librarians need to assess the strengths of their collections in particular subject areas. This book describes and illustrates a brief test for determining a library's collection strength. Though such tests are most often employed in academic libraries, the methodology outlined by the author should be useful to all types of libraries in assessing the strength of their holdings. In a time of increasing material and limited resources, libraries need to be particularly judicious in deciding which works to acquire. Oftentimes, a library seeks to develop strong holdings in one or more subject areas. Such an approach is especially useful for libraries that share their resources with other institutions. To plan their acquisitions carefully and to be of greatest use to other consortia members, a library needs to gauge the strength of its holdings accurately. This volume describes and illustrates a relatively brief test to assign libraries a score for existing collection strength in a subject area. Drawing upon expert human judgment and holdings data available from OCLC, the test can assist librarians in setting and verifying collection levels on the RLG or WLN Conspectus scales. Collection strength is often verified in a labor-intensive fashion. The brief test presented by the author is an economical alternative to the more typical labor-intensive approach to collection analysis.
