The finished layer was composed of broken stones about the size of walnuts and was spread with a shovel. Section D. Represents the finished road as consolidated by travel. The crown was made 6 inches, the width 18 feet, and the total thick ness about 10 inches. E shows the curbs, which were composed of rough, fiat stones, set on edge. As tangible features in the landscape, roads can be considered as a current condition, much as a plant community or current vegetation structure can be modeled as a persistent fixed feature or state variable. Excerpt from Modern Roads IT is not proposed in this book to trace the history of road construction since the days of the Romans, this has been done by many writers and would serve no useful purpose. Recent History of Roads. - The real history of the modern road commences only about 20 years ago, although previous to this date many attempts had been made to improve on the specification for the construction of what are known as Water bound Macadam Roads, which had been in vogue since the days of that great road engineer, Thomas Telford. The author had himself in the early eighties successfully treated the surfaces of gravel footpaths with ordinary coal tar and laid some considerable lengths of tarred macadam carriage ways with varying success. In his book, The Municipal and Sanitary Engineer's Handbook, published in 1883, he gave a description of this method of road construction, and in the 3rd edition, published in 1889, he gave a complete specification of tar macadam, the principles of which hold good to the present day. Excerpt from Highway Engineering: Rural Roads and Pavements In writing a text-book on a subject which is growing as rapidly as highway engineering is at the present time one finds himself confronted with a varying practice. The student who desires the latest up-to-date matter on roads must consult contemporaneous engineering periodicals and literature and sift from them what he deems best suited to his purpose. In (his work the author has endeavored to bring into a brief space the most recent and best practice as determined by his experience and research. As this text Is more especially concerned with rural roads, those types of roads most common in the rural districts, small cities, and towns, or best adapted for use therein, have been covered in greatest detail. Pavements have been treated largely with a view to their use for country roads, although the treatment, is thought to be sufficiently comprehensive to form a beginning or short, course for those desirous of taking up city paving work. The author is of the opinion that almost all of the principles of road building applicable to rural highways are equally applicable to city streets and vice versa. While technical analyses and technical language have not been shunned, it has been constantly borne in mind that the book is intended primarily to form one of a series in agricultural education. It is believed, therefore, that the work is of such a character that it will be read with interest by the layman and, because here are brought together many ideas from many sources, will serve as a useful reference book for professional engineers, road builders, and road officers.
