Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Road Models of the Office of Public Roads Some Of the more important roads near Rome were practically lined with temples, porticoes, and statues. On all roads inscribed milestones were placed at regular intervals. Plate II, figure 1, shows a model of the Appian Way. This is the highest developed type of road constructed by the Romans. Excerpt from The Road and the Roadside IN preparing this edition I have made quite exten sive additions to several of the original chapters of the book, and have added seven new chapters on subjects of most general interest concerning the public high ways. These additions do not. Make the work complete and exhaustive, but I think it will be found to be a comprehensive survey of the law, and other matters relating to highways which the ordinary reader is most anxious to know something about. Excerpt from Roads in Landscape Modeling: A Case Study of a Road Data Layer and Use in the Interior Northwest Landscape Analysis System That said, an important issue is how to appropriately depict roads in a land scape to accurately assess these tradeoffs. As tangible features in the landscape, roads can be considered as a current condition, much as a plant community or current vegetation structure can be modeled as a persistent fixed feature or state variable. However, roads also serve as disturbance agents and vectors, and thus are part of dynamic ecological processes. In some instances, roads may cause distur bance soil erosion or habitat fragmentation) or facilitate disturbance act as conduits for spread of weeds and other disturbance agents); in other instances, they may inhibit disturbance creating a fuel break that stops progression of a fire). However, including roads in landscape-level analyses presents many chal lenges owing to a frequent lack of adequate attribute and effects data describing types of roads and their impacts, as well as a lack of accepted modeling method ology. Excerpt from A d104-Book on Roads and Pavements Successful practice in the construction of highways must depend upon correct reasoning from elementary principles in each instance rather than upon following definite rules or methods of construction. The aim of this book is to give a brief discussion, from an engineering standpoint, of the principles involved in highway work, and to outline the more important systems of construction, with a view to forming a text which may serve as a basis for a systematic study of the subject. Details and statistics of particular examples have for the most part been excluded as undesirable in a book of this character. Such information is available in many forms for those having the necessary elementary training and experience to enable them to properly use it. Considerable space has been given to the location and construction of country roads, as seemed proper in view of the present general public interest in the matter, and the probable development of this new field of activity in engineering work. The improvement of our common roads must come through transferring such work to the charge of those who make it a profession, and not through teaching the public how roads should be constructed. Excerpt from The Construction of Roads and Pavements Since the publication of the first edition of The Construction of Roads and Pavements, considerable progress has been made in the field of highway engineering, especially with regard to the construction of rural highways. In the second edition, the errors and omissions of the first edition have been corrected so far as they have been noted and new material has been added where it was apparent that practice had really changed. However, the unsettled conditions that have recently prevailed in the highway field have made it very difficult to determine what was real progress and what was merely compromise construction due to abnormal conditions. Excerpt from Modern Roads IT is not proposed in this book to trace the history of road construction since the days of the Romans, this has been done by many writers and would serve no useful purpose. Recent History of Roads. - The real history of the modern road commences only about 20 years ago, although previous to this date many attempts had been made to improve on the specification for the construction of what are known as Water bound Macadam Roads, which had been in vogue since the days of that great road engineer, Thomas Telford. The author had himself in the early eighties successfully treated the surfaces of gravel footpaths with ordinary coal tar and laid some considerable lengths of tarred macadam carriage ways with varying success. In his book, The Municipal and Sanitary Engineer's Handbook, published in 1883, he gave a description of this method of road construction, and in the 3rd edition, published in 1889, he gave a complete specification of tar macadam, the principles of which hold good to the present day. Excerpt from Highway Engineering: Rural Roads and Pavements In writing a text-book on a subject which is growing as rapidly as highway engineering is at the present time one finds himself confronted with a varying practice. The student who desires the latest up-to-date matter on roads must consult contemporaneous engineering periodicals and literature and sift from them what he deems best suited to his purpose. In (his work the author has endeavored to bring into a brief space the most recent and best practice as determined by his experience and research. As this text Is more especially concerned with rural roads, those types of roads most common in the rural districts, small cities, and towns, or best adapted for use therein, have been covered in greatest detail. Pavements have been treated largely with a view to their use for country roads, although the treatment, is thought to be sufficiently comprehensive to form a beginning or short, course for those desirous of taking up city paving work. The author is of the opinion that almost all of the principles of road building applicable to rural highways are equally applicable to city streets and vice versa. While technical analyses and technical language have not been shunned, it has been constantly borne in mind that the book is intended primarily to form one of a series in agricultural education. It is believed, therefore, that the work is of such a character that it will be read with interest by the layman and, because here are brought together many ideas from many sources, will serve as a useful reference book for professional engineers, road builders, and road officers.
