Roads are important ecological features of forest landscapes, but their cause-and effect relationships with other ecosystem components are only recently becoming included in integrated landscape analyses. Simulation models can help us to understand how forested landscapes respond over time to disturbance and socioeconomic factors, and potentially to address the important role roads play in these processes. The inclusion of roads as static or as process components of the landscape modeling, however, presents numerous challenges owing to a general lack of adequate road data and threshold effect information. Roads have been included in several recent landscape analysis efforts in the Pacific Northwest, but not as dynamic components. The Interior Northwest Landscape Analysis System (INLAS) developed a framework for simulation modeling of succession, disturbance, and management activities at the subbasin level. Roads were included in the INLAS project as a static landscape feature. We describe the data, analysis, and applications of road data in the INLAS project. Using the INLAS effort as a case study, we examine the challenges of incorporating roads into multidisciplinary landscape-level analyses. With an emphasis on data requirements, we identify practical and logistic barriers to dynamic modeling of road interactions, and propose a strategy for future studies.

As tangible features in the landscape, roads can be considered as a current condition, much as a plant community or current vegetation structure can be modeled as a persistent fixed feature or state variable. However, roads also serve as disturbance agents and vectors, and thus are part of dynamic ecological processes. In some instances, roads may cause distur bance soil erosion or habitat fragmentation) or facilitate disturbance act as conduits for spread of weeds and other disturbance agents); in other instances, they may inhibit disturbance creating a fuel break that stops progression of a fire). However, including roads in landscape-level analyses presents many chal lenges owing to a frequent lack of adequate attribute and effects data describing types of roads and their impacts, as well as a lack of accepted modeling method ology. The construction and operation of highways has a significant impact on the environment. While such impact is impossible to avoid, modern highways are constructed and landscaped to minimise these impacts as far as possible. Good landscaping minimises the impact on those living or working close to the highway, while at the same time regenerating the natural landscape disturbed during construction. Using as its background the successful landscape design of the Nanjing-Hangzhou Expressway in Jiangsu Province, China, which opened to traffic in 2007, Highway Landscape Design includes reference to all aspects of the landscaping of highways, including interchanges, embankments, central reservations, bridges, service and toll station areas, and drainage systems. Appropriate consideration is given to the negative impact on the surrounding environment during the process of construction and it discusses the ecological evaluation and conservation strategy for the highway route. China is in some respects at the forefront of highway landscape design as a result of rapid growth and development coupled with the financial resources to implement major infrastructure works, and the concepts, technologies and methods developed for this Expressway provide valuable experience for sustainable development strategies for such infrastructure.

This open access book traces the development of landscapes along the 414-kilometer China-Laos Railway, one of the first infrastructure projects implemented under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and which is due for completion at the end of 2021. Written from the perspective of landscape architecture and intended for planners and related professionals engaged in the development and conservation of these landscapes, this book provides history, planning pedagogy and interdisciplinary framing for working alongside the often-opaque planning, design and implementation processes of large-scale infrastructure. It complicates simplistic notions of development and urbanization frequently reproduced in the Laos-China frontier region. Many of the projects and sites investigated in this book are recent "firsts" in Laos: Laos's first wildlife sanctuary for trafficked endangered species, its first botanical garden and its first planting plan for a community forest. Most often the agents and accomplices of neoliberal development, the planning and design professions, including landscape architecture, have little dialogue with either the mainstream natural sciences or critical social sciences that form the discourse of projects in Laos and comparable contexts. Covering diverse conceptions and issues of development, including cultural and scientific knowledge exchanges between Laos and China, nature tourism, connectivity and new town planning, this book also features nine planning proposals for Laos generated through this research initiative since the railway's groundbreaking in 2016. Each proposal promotes a wider "landscape approach" to development and deploys landscape architecture's spatial and ecological acumen to synthesize critical development studies with the planner's capacity, if not naive predilection, to intervene on the ground. Ultimately, this book advocates the cautious engagement of the professionally oriented built-environment disciplines, such as regional planning, civil engineering and landscape architecture, with the landscapes of development institutions and environmental NGOs.
