Fear makes a man do irrational things. It causes him to not see everything with crystal clear precision. Instead, everything is a blur and disoriented. It's a puzzle that's missing the last piece; a table that's missing one of its legs. No matter how much you try to mend it, it will never be fixed again. Chris' world was that unfinished puzzle and he was that broken table. The one person that made him feel at home and complete was now gone forever and would never be brought back. However, in order to fix himself once again, he must go on a mission that brings his heart and mind on the brink of total insanity. His fears and his pain are the only two things left to drive him as he walks straight into the unknown. However, how far can ones pain and fear possibly drive him and where will it lead him? Will it be short and painless and lead him to his destiny? Or will it be long and painful and lead him into the brick wall that is his fate?

In this conclusion to The Black Alley, Chris Williams is in a darkened state of mind with, seemingly, no chance of recovery. He has lost the one person in his life that meant everything to him and is now on a mission to avenge that loss. However, the man he once thought to be the brains behind the operation is nothing more than a mere pawn in a never ending game of chess. However, this is far from a game. It is very real and turns out to be a complete suicide mission. He now has to try and infiltrate the evil behind his misery. In order to do that, he must go through a horrendous road full of bumps and turns. There are no stop signs and no U-turns once he is there. Along the way, he learns more about himself and finds the one thing that will not only effect his case but his entire life. It is an unwanted journey of self-discovery. However, in the end, it might not be unwanted.

A set of perfectly puzzling British whodunits featuring Detective Inspector Sloan—from a CWA Diamond Dagger winner and “most ingenious” author (The New Yorker). Over the course of twenty-four crime novels set in the fictional County of Calleshire, England, and featuring the sleuthing team of shrewd Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan and his less-than-shrewd sidekick, Detective Constable William Crosby, award-winning author Catherine Aird maintained the perfect balance between cozy village mystery and police procedural. These three entertaining crime novels offer “the very best in British mystery” (The New Yorker). Last Respects: A local fisherman finds a body in the river—but the coroner’s report reveals the victim didn’t die from drowning. Now Calleshire’s most successful pair of puzzle-solving policemen must plumb the depths of this mystery and haul in a murderer. Harm’s Way: When a crow drops a severed human finger, Sloan begins the search for the body that goes with it—and the list of people who have gone missing from Great Rooden’s farming country is lengthy. With Constable Crosby lending a hand, it’s up to Sloan to point the finger at the culprit. A Dead Liberty: A crime of passion, a poisoned meal, and a jealous woman who would kill before she would be spurned—it might all fit if only the accused would talk. But Lucy Durmast refuses to utter a single word. With Lucy’s lips sealed, Sloan has no choice but to listen to his intuition.

In the years immediately following the erection of the new gaol, crime was once more greatly in the ascendant. After the peace which gave independence to the United States, the country was overrun with discharged soldiers and sailors. They were mostly in dire poverty, and took to depredation almost as a matter of course. The calendars were particularly heavy. At the September Sessions of the Old Bailey in 1783, fifty-eight were convicted for capital offences. The Deputy Recorder, in passing sentence, remarked that it gave him inexpressible pain, and that it was truly alarming "to behold a bar so crowded with persons whose wickedness and imprudence had induced them to commit such enormous crimes as the laws of their country justly and necessarily punish with death.

' I have an excellent memory for faces. I recall the face of every dead body I have ever seen. Every murder victim, every suicide, every cot death and every death reported as unexplained.' At the age of 22, Dennis McGookin was made a Detective Constable in the Criminal Investigation Department of Kent County Constabulary. He had no way of knowing at the time, but this career decision would put him at the heart of some of the most notorious crimes in Britain, including the case of Kenneth Noye, the so-called 'M25 Road Rage Killer', and the largest human-smuggling homicide investigation in British history. Told with forensic detail, but also humanity and heart, The Many Faces of Crime is the story of an extraordinary career that took McGookin from the south side of Belfast to the diplomatic echelons of Beijing, and put him face-to-face with both victims and murderers.
