(Preface) 'This book comprehensively surveys the work of Robert Maillart (1872-1940), the talented Swiss construction-engineer, particularly well-known for his ingenious bridge designs. Far-reaching developments in bridge construction using reinforced concrete have taken place since the first edition of this book appeared in 1948. Reinforced concrete is being used in new ways which allow for different structures, both functionally and aesthetically.Today, we are deeply conscious of Maillart's pioneering activity, not only from the purely constructional point of view, but also as a designer of exceptional talent, the originator of ambitious schemes for bridges and other constructions. In Maillart's bridges, the roadways or railways are no longer loads supported by arches, they become integral parts of the bridge itself, serving a constructional function so that there is a great saving of material and a greater degree of safety. The concrete takes high compressive stresses and can be poured in any form; the steel reinforcing is stressed in tension and is stiffened by the surrounding concrete. Maillart was one of the first to recognize the potential of both materials used in this way, and this has assured him a leading place amongst the construction engineers of all time. The illustrations in this book, depicting the wide range of his work, give ample evidence of his far-sighted genius.'

This book is designed to be a practical, “easy to read” resource to assist bridge engineers in various roles, including bridge owners, designers, constructors, and colleagues from academia. Focused on bridge construction, the book is driven by two narrow and straightforward questions: “How can I do it?” and “What is critical?”. It is likely that many readers will not read the book in one sitting, but rather refer to chapters as needed, based on their specific needs and interests. It is known that the Romans had a practice of recording incidents and accidents on wax tablets and bringing them to a central building in Rome, where these cases were discussed and critical lessons were identified. This practice is likely one of the reasons Rome was one of the most significant “schools” of bridge engineering in history. Similarly, the purpose of this book is also to be a “wax plate” contribution to the bridge engineering community.

This book gathers the peer-reviewed papers presented at the 13th International Conference on Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC), held in Kyoto, Japan, on September 12-15, 2023. It highlights the latest advances and innovations in the field of conservation and restoration of historical and heritage structures. The conference topics encompass history of construction and building technology, theory and practice of conservation, inspection methods, non-destructive techniques and laboratory testing, numerical modeling and structural analysis, management of heritage structures and conservation strategies, structural health monitoring, repair and strengthening strategies and techniques, vernacular constructions, seismic analysis and retrofit, vulnerability and risk analysis, resilience of historic areas to climate change and hazard events, durability, and sustainability. As such the book represents an invaluable, up-to-the-minute tool, providing an essential overview of conservation of historical constructions, and offers an important platform to engineers, architects, archeologists, and geophysicists. Chapter Guidelines for Seismic Retrofitting of Earthen Historic Buildings in Peru and Latin America is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
