Reinforced concrete is the go-to powerhouse of modern construction: no other load-bearing building material is as malleable with similarly good noise and fire protection properties. The book illustrates this versatility with around 20 building examples and specialist articles from the fields of structural and civil engineering. In-depth project descriptions and numerous detailed drawings show the design and construction process of these halls, bridges, railway stations, and office buildings. Articles informed by research and practice also portray a building material in transformation. Still, the reinforced concrete buildings of earlier decades also constitute a legacy, and their restoration and maintenance continue to fascinate us to this day. The book also takes a critical look at the handling of this building material.

Robust Design brings together 16 chapters by an eminent group of authors in a wide range of fields presenting aspects of robustness in biological, ecological, and computational systems. The volme is the first to address robustness in biological, ecological, and computational systems. It is an outgrowth of a new research program on robustness at the Sante Fe Institute founded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. For those interested in complexity or interdisciplinary science, robustness is seen as currently among the most intellectually active and promising research areas with important applications in all fields of science, business, and economics.

The concept of resilience has arisen as a “new way of thinking”, becoming a response to both the causes and effects of ongoing global challenges. As it strongly stresses cities’ transformative potential, resilience’s final purpose is to prevent and manage unforeseen events and improve communities’ environmental and social quality. Although the resilience theory has been investigated in depth, several methodological challenges remain, mainly related to the concept’s practical sphere. As a matter of fact, resilience is commonly criticised for being too ambiguous and empty of meaning. At the same time, turning resilience into practice is not easy to do. This will arguably be one of the most impactful global issues for future research on resilience. The Special Issue “Bridging the Gap: The Measure of Urban Resilience” falls under this heading, and it seeks to synthesise state-of-the-art knowledge of theories and practices on measuring resilience. The Special Issue collected 11 papers that address the following questions: “What are the theoretical perspectives of measuring urban resilience? What are the existing methods for measuring urban resilience? What are the main features that a technique for measuring urban resilience needs to have? What is the role of measuring urban resilience in operationalising cities’ ability to adapt, recover and benefit from shocks?”

In The Top 10 Traits of Highly Resilient People Dr. Andrea Pennington presents 20 real life stories of people from various backgrounds and cultures who have dug deep within themselves to heal and move forward after facing difficult circumstances. These were sometimes life threatening, and often led to rock bottom or burnout. What these stories all have in common is how they prove that the traits of resilience can be built and expanded with intention so that we can thrive after trauma, and experience more growth than we thought possible. There is great hope and inspiration to be found here. This book has 10 sections with stories covering each of the top 10 traits of resilience, giving the reader examples from each of the traits that Dr. Andrea has taught her students and clients alike over the years. What many people find is that they have 2 or 3 of these resilience traits in abundance, but others were barely on their radar. The aim of this book is not only to inspire hope, but to show the reader where the gaps in their resilience traits might be, so that they can cultivate those traits and become happier and more resilient than ever. The authors in this book come from all walks of life with a range of life experiences; from the stages of Broadway and the dizzy heights of Dubai's business world, to understaffed hospital wards, a veterinary clinic, and in places all over the world.
