A new translation of Ponson du Terrail's "Rocambole" by his great grandnephew, Jean de Ponson du Terrail. Ponson du Terrail (1829 -1871) was the most famous French writer of his time, the most read, the most sought after by newspapers and readers, and the first of his generation to become wealthy through sales of his novels. Those feats must be measured in terms of his contemporaries, which included Alexandre Dumas, Eugene Sue, Victor Hugo, Paul Feval, Gustave Flaubert, and George Sand. Ponson du Terrail's novels captivated an immense audience more than twenty years in France, and throughout the world. He reached fame at age 27 and remained the most popular writer of his time, overshadowing all of his colleagues in terms of sales and fans. Gifted with a virtuous imagination and the ability to write very fast, he wrote over 200 literary works in a span of only 20 years. This new translation by his great grandnephew, Jean de Ponson du Terrail, takes us to the start of the Rocambole series: "Two brothers, born of the same mother but different fathers, become mortal enemies and fight each other on the streets of mid-19th century Paris. One dedicates his life to defend the weak and the helpless; the other spends his time creating evil plans to defraud others. A battle of wills and wits ensues in a fast-moving, complex plot."

Rocambole and The Jack of Hearts Club is the second book in the Rocambole series written by Ponson du Terrail, which began publication in 1858 in La Patrie newspaper as a feuilleton-a serialized novel published daily. In the first part of the series, under the title of The Mysterious Inheritance, Ponson du Terrail introduces many of the characters that go on to become central actors in this drama that begins in Russia during Napoleon's great army's retreat. There, we meet Colonel Armand de Kergaz, Captain Filipone, and Cavalryman Bastien. The saga springs forth from that first event and later the rest of the actors come into the scene.Ponson du Terrail's mastery of the serial novel with elaborate plots, subplots, panoply of characters and continuous cliffhangers are the reason he became the most popular writer of his time-his fame growing into stardom and his readers becoming fervent fans that lined up daily to purchase the newspaper that published his novels.

Turn-of-the-century Paris was the beating heart of a rapidly changing world. Painters, scientists, revolutionaries, poets -- all were there. But so, too, were the shadows: Paris was a violent, criminal place, its sinister alleyways the haunts of Apache gangsters and its cafes the gathering places of murderous anarchists. In 1911, it fell victim to perhaps the greatest theft of all time -- the taking of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre. Immediately, Alphonse Bertillon, a detective world-renowned for pioneering crime-scene investigation techniques, was called upon to solve the crime. And quickly the Paris police had a suspect: a young Spanish artist named Pablo Picasso....

Rocambole is a mystery adventure epic by the French author, Pierre Alexis Ponson du Terrail (1829 - 1871). It is the story of an adventurer and criminal who started life on the wrong side of the law, redeemed himself, and then devoted his life to doing good. The Rocambole saga has been acknowledged for transitioning the old-fashioned gothic novel to modern heroic fiction thus starting the genres of adventure crime fiction novels. Before there was a Sherlock Holmes, Scarlet Pimpernel, Hercule Poirot, the Saint, Arsene Lupin, and James Bond, there was Rocambole. The stories take the reader back to the nineteenth century, an era of elaborate styles and extravagant wealth as well as extreme poverty and ghetto life. Most of the stories take place in nineteenth century London and Paris with their cobblestone streets, carriage traffic, gas-lit narrow streets, and shadowy characters. Other stories take the reader to imperial Spain, tsarist Russia, revolutionary Ireland, exotic India, and pioneering Australia. The epic itself is the personal account of a young boy who grew to become an old man and who led in evil and good lives in stories full of interesting characters, creative plots, heroic adventures, and exciting cliffhangers. It will be hard not to dislike Rocambole's early life despite his charismatic personality just as it would be hard not to admire him when the innocent love of one who thought he was her brother transforms him to embracing a nobler life. The original Rocambole stories filled seventeen books. This is the only English adaptation of the full story. It will be published in three volumes. The first volume, The Dark Side, tells of Rocambole's sinister life and introduces all the characters who were Rocambole's enemies, several of whom became life-long friends after his redemption. It will be followed by the second volume, Redemption, and the third volume, Crusade. This adaptation maintains all the major plots of the original saga but eliminates minor subplots and characters and replaces them with original material to bridge the gaps. A short video trailer can be seen on YouTube under the title: "Rocambole Lives".
