Rockglaciers are the visible expression of the creep of mountain permafrost. They are indicative of special geo-ecologic and geomorphic conditions regarding thermal situation, talus production, hydrology, and hazards in high mountain environments of all major mountain systems on earth. As relict features, they are of great paleoclimatic value. This book presents a systematic treatment of this landform in its environmental context.

Despite substantial work on some aspects of rock glacier hydrology, there have been no comparisons between drainage basins containing rock glaciers and those without. This thesis examines summer runoff from two basins in the La Sal Mountains: the non-rock glaciated Wet Fork and rock glaciated Gold Basin. Discharge was indirectly calculated using resident water pressure transducers secured to the bed of the stream to determine water height in each surveyed channel along with the Manning equation to estimate velocity. A flume in Gold Basin measured discharge from a rock glacier occupying approximate 6% of the total basin area. Storm precipitation was recorded using a tipping bucket rain gage. Runoff events were analyzed for volume of stormflow, stormflow duration and peak flow duration. Four events were recorded in Wet Fork (n = 4), five events were recorded in Gold Basin (n = 5), and six events at the Gold Basin flume (n = 6). Wet Fork hydrographs are dominated by baseflow throughout the summer and a small proportion (0.13-0.31%) of precipitation leaves the basin as stormflow during storms. Gold Basin hydrographs are characterized by early season snowmelt with flood peaks associated with summer storms. Runoff from the gaged rock glacier represents 15-30% of total basin runoff, and is inversely related to precipitation and directly related to rainfall intensity. Removal of rock glacier hydrographs from total basin hydrographs indicate that there is increased surface runoff from alpine drainage basins which contain rock glaciers, suggesting rock glaciers act as impervious surfaces. Alpine drainage basins with rock glaciers have greater surface runoff and higher flood peaks than drainage basins that lack rock glaciers.

A Lichenometric Study Of Holocene Rock Glaciers And Neoglacial Moraines Frances Lake Map Area Southeastern Yukon Territory And Northwest Territories written by Arthur S. Dyke and has been published by Geological Survey of Canada this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

The Frances Lake map area of the northeastern Canadian Cordillera is crossed by northwest-southeast trending ranges of the Selwyn Mountains. Rock glaciers and neoglacial moraines were mapped during general surficial geological mapping in 1981 and selected features were studied in detail in 1983 from 6 fly camps in the northeastern part of the study area. Lichenometric ages are thought to pertain to time elapsed since stabilization of substrate, roughly corresponding to time elapsed since deposition of moraines and since initial flow of a rock glacier lobe or tread off from its parent apron. The ages of rock glaciers and moraines were assessed through lichenometry, the only dating technique that can be applied to nearly all substrates. This report discusses the lichenometric method used and presents the results from the 6 study areas as well as a regional summary and correlation.

Characterizing Groundwater Flow Dynamics And Storage Capacity In An Active Rock Glacier written by Simon Seelig and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-07 with Science categories.

Alpine aquifers play a critical role in the hydrology of mountainous areas by sustaining base flow in downstream rivers during dry periods and retarding flood propagation after heavy precipitation events. Progressing climate change alters climatic and meteorological boundary conditions as well as the hydraulic response of alpine catchments by ablating glaciers and thawing permafrost. Rock glaciers exert a controlling influence on the catchment response due to their prominent groundwater storage and complex drainage characteristics. This thesis investigates the hydrogeology and internal structure of the active rock glacier Innere Ölgrube (Ötztal Alps), which governs catchment runoff and is affected by permafrost degradation. A 3D geometrical model of its internal structure is obtained by combining geophysical data and permafrost creep modelling. Available data and new results are integrated into a conceptual hydrogeological model providing a sound basis for the implementation of a prospective numerical groundwater flow model. Hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic units constituting the rock glacier are estimated and groundwater recharge fluxes quantified. Fundamental properties of the heterogeneous groundwater flow system within the rock glacier are discussed and compared to existing rock glacier studies.

Glaciers Of The Karakoram Himalaya written by Kenneth Hewitt and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-12 with Science categories.

The Karakoram contains the greatest concentration of glaciers and most of the largest ice masses outside high latitudes. They comprise major stores and sources of fresh water in an otherwise extreme, continental, dry region. As many as 200 million people living downstream, in the valleys of the Indus and Yarkand Rivers, depend on melt waters from snow and ice. They are at risk from climate-change impacts on glaciers and water supply, and from hazards such as glacial lake outburst floods. Useful research initiatives go back to the nineteenth century, but coverage has generally been limited geographically and has not been continuous over time. It is almost 80 years since a monograph was devoted to the Karakoram glaciers. The book presents a comprehensive overview, including statistics for the ice cover, glacier mass balance and dynamics, glacierized landscapes, rock glaciers, water resources and environmental hazards. Published glaciological and related research is surveyed along with expedition reports and archival materials in several languages. The expanding potential of satellite coverage is exploited, but conditions and processes reported from field investigations are the main focus. Previously unpublished observations by the author are presented, based on some 45 years of work in the region. Broad understanding of the glacial environment is used to address emerging concerns about the High Asian cryosphere and the fate of its glaciers. These are discussed in relation to the pressing issues of water supply, environmental risk and sustainability. Questions of what is not known help identify much needed monitoring and research. The book is of interest to researchers, professionals, and those studying glaciers, mountain environments, water resources and environmental hazards. The topics discussed should be of concern for anyone involved in regional development and global change in South and Inner Asia.

Periglacial And Paraglacial Processes And Environments written by Jasper Knight and has been published by Geological Society of London this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Nature categories.

Periglacial and paraglacial environments, located outside ice sheet margins but responding to similar climate forcings, are key to identifying climate change effects upon the Earth system. These environments are relicts of cold Earth processes and so are most sensitive to global warming. Changes in the distribution and thickness of permafrost in continental interiors have implications for ecosystem and landscape stability. Periglacial Alpine environments are experiencing increased rockfall and mass movement, leading to rock glacier instability and sediment release to downstream rivers. In turn, these landscape effects impact on natural hazards and human activities in these sensitive and geologically transient environments.
