Marek’s disease is a form of cancer of poultry caused by an important herpesvirus (MDV). It continues to be a threat to poultry health and welfare and worldwide losses are estimated to be US$ 1 billion annually. Marek's Disease provides a timely review of the problems of Marek's disease with descriptions of the complex viral life cycle, how MDV targets different types of white blood cells, and details of the virus structure, its genes and proteins. The multiplicity of factors contributing to susceptibility is explored in detail Vaccination - the problems arising from current vaccination strategies and how these can be improved and made sustainable in future The lessons learned in the control of MD over the past 30 years, and how we can use MD as a model for other animal and human diseases is discussed

Nutrition And Biotechnology In Heart Disease And Cancer written by John B. Longenecker and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-14 with Science categories.

There is a unique nutritional commonality developing in research relating to coronary heart disease and cancer. The primary aim of this conference was to provide a forum for the leading researchers, clinicians, educators and administrators in these two fields to present a program on heart disease and cancer which included a) the major historical milestones, b) the present areas of greatest interest in research and therapy, c) the latest nutritional, molecular, and biotechnological advances, and d) a perspective on the most promising areas for future research and therapy. Scientists have long contended that research marches on the feet of methodology. Thus there are numerous examples of research fields opening secondary to methodological advances. Some examples are: 1) thin layer and gas-liquid chromatography which, along with high pressure liquid chromatography have broadened the line of advances in lipid research and 2) peR and the resultant impact on molecular biological approaches to several fields of science. The organizers of this conference thought the time was propitious for bringing together knowledge on newer aspects of molecular biological research with current advances in the two major areas of degenerative disease--coronary heart disease and cancer. Our knowledge of these "killer diseases" has expanded greatly in the past few years and the advance has been catalyzed by use of an array of molecular biological techniques. Thanks to these, medical thinking in these areas is changing from considerations of treatment to strategies for prevention.

Viral Pathogenesis And Immunity written by Neal Nathanson and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-04 with Medical categories.

Based on the highly successful reference work Viral Pathogenesis published in 1997, this concise, economical version can be used both as an introductory text or for self-education by medical students and biologists alike. This latest edition provides a completely revised overview of the subject with new chapters on innate immunity, emerging viral diseases, and antiviral therapy in a format that is easy to understand without continually referring to additional information. Used by the author in his graduate classes at the University of Pennsylvania, it sets forth the essential principles and discusses the details of how the immune system responds to viral invasion including the treatment and prevention of infection. Illustrated by pertinent examples it is one of the only books devoted exclusively to this topic. * Offers almost a 20% expansion over the first edition * Focuses specifically on viral pathogenesis unlike other texts where only a few chapters are devoted to the topic * Neal Nathanson is one of the primary authorities in the field and has authored chapters on viral pathogenesis in two of the most well known virology and microbiology titles Field's Virology and Topley and Wilson's Microbiology * Now in four color throughout!

The book gives a comprehensive overview on the knowledge of virus infection relevant for humans and animals. For each virus family the molecular details of the virus particle and the viral replication cycle are described. In the case of virus types with relevance for human and/or animal health the data on molecular biology, genetics and virus-cell interaction are combined with those concerning, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinics, prevention and therapy.

A renaissance of virus research is taking centre stage in biology. Empirical data from the last decade indicate the important roles of viruses, both in the evolution of all life and as symbionts of host organisms. There is increasing evidence that all cellular life is colonized by exogenous and/or endogenous viruses in a non-lytic but persistent lifestyle. Viruses and viral parts form the most numerous genetic matter on this planet.

One hundred years ago, when Martinus W. Beijerinck in Delft and Friedrich Loeffler on Riems Island discovered a new class of infectious agents in plants and animals, a new discipline was born. This book, a compilation of papers written by well-recognized scientists, gives an impression of the early days, the pioneer period and the current state of virology. Recent developments and future perspectives of this discipline are sketched against a historic background. With contributions by A. Alcami, D. Baulcombe, F. Brown, L. W. Enquist, H. Feldmann, A. Garcia-Sastre, D. Griffiths, M. C. Horzinek, A. van Kammen, H.-D. Klenk, F. A. Murphy, T. Muster, R. O'Neill, P. Palese, C. Patience, R. Rott, H.- P. Schmiedebach, S. Schneider-Schaulies, G. L. The studies in this special issue of VIRUS GENES provide information on the mechanisms by which viruses have evolved together with their natural hosts by acquiring RNA and DNA molecules from the infected cells into their genomes. Part A is devoted to studies on virus genes that were acquired to evade the vertebrate host immune system. Part B deals with the acquisition of cellular and foreign virus genes by Herpes and Irido viruses. The studies presented in Part C describe the poxvirus genes that are homologues of cellular genes. Together, these studies provide an insight into the evolutionary processes that viruses have developed to control the metabolic machinery of the infected tissue cells, and to prevent the defense machinery of the infected host, e.g., the immune system, from recognizing the infecting virus. Such mechanisms may explain the pathogenicity and reflect the virulence of viruses. Molecular Evolution of Viruses - Past and Present: Evolution of Viruses by Acquisition of Cellular RNA and DNA was preceded by two VIRUS GENES special issues on the evolution of viruses (VIRUS GENES 11:2/3, 1996, and VIRUS GENES 16:1, 1998). The first special issue dealt with the evolution of retrons, retroelements, retroviruses and endogenous retroviruses and current evolution of viruses. The second special issue provided information on the evolution of human, marine algae and fungal viruses. These issues, together with the third special issue on virus evolution, provide an interesting insight into the evolution of DNA and RNA viruses.

With the growing global fear of a major pandemic, avian influenza (AI) virus research has greatly increased in importance. In Avian Influenza Virus, an expert team of researchers and diagnosticians examine the fundamental, yet essential, virological methods for AI virus research and diagnostics as well as some of the newest molecular procedures currently used for basic and applied research. They present exciting, cutting-edge new methods that focus both on studying the virus itself and on work with avian hosts, an area greatly lacking in research.
