The Southern Ocean plays a key role in atmospheric CO2 sequestration, accounting for ~40-50% of the anthropogenic CO2 absorbed by the modern ocean. The size of this sink is attributed to strong watermass sinking (i.e., mode/intermediate water and bottom water formation), which transports carbon to the mid- and deep-ocean thus isolating it from the atmosphere for centuries. The Southern Ocean also played a critical role in atmospheric pCO2 variations in the geologic past on both orbital and millennial timescales. Moreover, the Southern Ocean modulates atmospheric and oceanic circulation in the tropics remotely, influencing low-latitude atmospheric CO2 exchange. Thus, the Southern Ocean is a key component of the global climate system, whose operation must be better understood at a range of timescales in order to accurately assess its effects on atmospheric pCO2 in the future. This Research Topic will consist of a set of cutting-edge investigations of the processes and mechanisms of Southern Ocean influence on atmospheric pCO2 and global climate change.

Global Changes in the Perspective of the Past Edited by J. A. Eddy and H. Oeschger To identify the marks of humans on the planet we must know the natural background on which they were imposed. To determine their importance we need to know the range of variability of the natural system. To be able to predict the ultimate impact of human intervention on the Earth system it is necessary to understand how the system works, including the chemical interactions that link the living and nonliving parts. Such answers will come, in part if not completely, from what is known of past changes on the Earth, derived from the history and written records held in natural archives, e.g. tree rings, ice, ocean and lake sediments, coral deposits, and in the strata of soils and rock. On this basis, leading experts from the broad spectrum of science met in Berlin to discuss the use of paleoclimatic data for analyzing climatic processes and for modeling the future evolution of climate. It is hoped that this volume, which contains the background papers and summary group reports of the workshop, will illuminate some of the burning questions yet unanswered in the field of paleostudies and accelerate the pace of progress in this field. It should be of interest to climatologists, atmospheric scientists, biogeochemists, oceanographers, ecologists, glaciologists, and numerical modelers. Molybdenum (Mo) is a widely used trace metal for investigating redox conditions. However, unanswered questions remain that concentration and bulk isotopic analysis cannot specially answer. Improvements can be made by combining new geochemical techniques to traditional methods of Mo analysis. In this Element, we propose a refinement of Mo geochemistry within aquatic systems, ancient rocks, and modern sediments through molecular geochemistry (systematically combining concentration, isotope ratio, elemental mapping, and speciation analyses). Specifically, to intermediate sulfide concentrations governing Mo behavior below the 'switch-point' and dominant sequestration pathways in low oxygen conditions. The aim of this work is to 1) aid and improve the breadth of Mo paleoproxy interpretations by considering Mo speciation and 2) address outstanding research gaps concerning Mo systematics (cycling, partitioning, sequestration, etc.). The Mo paleoproxy has potential to solve ever complex research questions. By using molecular geochemical recommendations, improved Mo paleoproxy interpretations and reconstruction can be achieved.
