Gli antichi romani pensavano che, grazie alla qualità ideale del loro ordinamento giuridico, potessero mirare a realizzare una comunità umana universale. Anche i cristiani, avendo ricevuto un mandato da parte di Dio di riunire tutti gli uomini in un solo popolo, si trovavano con una missione universale in questo mondo. Come coordinare queste concorrenti pretese di universalità da parte dell’Impero e della Chiesa? In questo libro, il bizantinista Endre von Ivánka affronta questa domanda esaminando differenti concezioni di “impero” e di “popolo di Dio” in tre epoche storiche: la prima dall’ascesa dell’imperatore Augusto fino alla caduta dell’Impero d’Occidente nel 476; la seconda dall’affermarsi dell’Impero Bizantino fino alla sua caduta nel 1453. L’ultima considera gli sviluppi all’interno dell’ortodossia russa fino alla Rivoluzione d’ottobre. Secondo von Ivánka, le importanti differenze tra cattolici e ortodossi nella concezione del rapporto tra Chiesa e Stato sono da ricondurre più a fattori storici che a eventuali influssi culturali sui bizantini, estranei alla tradizione europea. Alcuni importanti eventi storici degli ultimi due secoli potrebbero inoltre accendere la speranza di un riavvicinamento dei due ambiti culturali e religiosi.

The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Starting from these premises, the present work examines - within a chronological span that goes from the conclusion of the Second World War to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate - the contribution offered by the Holy See and by Catholics from different national contexts in deciphering the role of the Mediterranean Sea within the wider global context. As such, it constitutes a reflection on this geographical space with its peculiar cultural, economic, political, and religious realities by highlighting the role played by the Mediterranean in the elaboration of visions and projects of civilization. The richest and most politically complex regions in Italy in the earliest middle ages were the Byzantine sections of the peninsula, thanks to their links with the most coherent early medieval state, the Byzantine empire. This comparative study of the histories of Rome, Ravenna, and Venice examines their common Byzantine past, since all three escaped incorporation into the Lombard kingdom in the late 7th and early 8th centuries. By 750, however, Rome and Ravenna's political links with the Byzantine Empire had been irrevocably severed. Thus, did these cities remain socially and culturally heirs of Byzantium? How did their political structures, social organisation, material culture, and identities change? Did they become part of the Western political and ideological framework of Italy? This study identifies and analyses the ways in which each of these cities preserved the structures of the Late Antique social and cultural world; or in which they adapted each and every element available to them to their own needs, at various times and in various ways, to create a new identity based partly on their Roman heritage and partly on their growing integration with the rest of medieval Italy. It tells a story which encompasses the main contemporary narratives, documentary evidence, recent archaeological discoveries, and discussions on art history; it follows the markers of status and identity through titles, names, ethnic groups, liturgy and ritual, foundation myths, representations, symbols, and topographies of power to shed light on a relatively little known area of early medieval Italian history.

A Mosca, poco lontano dal Cremlino, la Cattedrale di Cristo Salvatore è la sede del patriarcato ortodosso: fu demolita per edificare un palazzo dei Soviet che non fu mai terminato, poi trasformata in una gigantesca piscina, infine ricostruita com’era. Nella cittadina di Kubinka, poco più a est, c’è invece la Chiesa delle forze armate, interamente composta con materiali di guerra: cingoli, mezzi militari, armi abbandonate dai nazisti in fuga. Edifici come questi ci parlano della stretta interdipendenza che da sempre esiste in Russia tra Stato e Chiesa e che da quando Kirill è diventato patriarca, nel 2009, si è intensificata secondo l’antico principio bizantino della sinfonia: entrambe le istituzioni operano per conto di Dio, in piena unità di intenti. Non c’è da stupirsi dunque che un afflato messianico percorra la storia russa, dalla figura paterna e autorevole dello zar alla palingenesi della rivoluzione d’Ottobre; da Stalin che, mentre chiama il popolo a raccolta per la guerra, riapre gli edifici di culto fino ai sogni imperiali di Vladimir Putin, tinti di onnipotenza. A cinquant’anni dal Vaticano II, Papa Francesco ha messo in campo la categoria di «crisi dell’impegno comunitario» per leggere lo stato dell’arte della vita della chiesa di oggi. Per comprendere in maniera adeguata questo giudizio è necessario rileggere il lungo e accidentato percorso del rapporto della chiesa con il mondo: i termini con i quali, ancora oggi, si è soliti affrontarlo, proprio perché “moderni” nella loro genesi, non sono più attuali e utili. Occorre prendere sul serio l’invito a riconoscere e accettare senza riserve l’attuale «cambiamento d’epoca»: qui sembra aprirsi la strada per procedere a superare il divorzio tra la Chiesa e la storia, una tra le finalità al cuore del Vaticano II, ancora in attesa di essere pienamente recepito.
