Only a renaissance man could have described this glorious city in its heyday. And only Carlo Levi, writer, painter, politician and one of the last century's most celebrated talents, could depict Rome at the height of its optimism and vitality after World War II. In Fleeting Rome, the era of post war 'La Dolce Vita' is brought magnificently to life in the daily bustle of Rome's street traders, housewives and students at work and play, the colourful festivities of Ferragosto and San Giovanni, the little theatre of Pulcinella al Pincio; all vibrant sights and sounds of this ancient, yet vital city.

"A brilliant, methodical investigation of a murder scandal that convulsed the Roman political and social establishment in the 1950s" ( Financial Times). On April 9 1953, twenty-one-year-old Wilma Montesi went missing from her family home in Rome. Thirty-six hours later her body was found washed up on a neglected public beach. Some said it was suicide; others, a tragic accident. But as the police tried to close the case, darker rumors bubbled to the surface. Could it be that the mysterious death of this quiet, conservative girl was linked to a drug-fueled orgy, involving some of the richest and most powerful men in Italy? Death and the Dolce Vita, "a hybrid of history and police detection, brilliantly recreates the details of the Montesi affair" in light of the postwar economic miracolo italiano that inspired Fellini's classic film of libertine frivolity. "As well as being a thriller, [it] provides an excellent account of the virtues and misdeeds of Europe's most foxy political class" (Ian Thompson, The Guardian, UK). "An intense, claustrophobic narrative of murder, mystery and scandal worthy of a Verdi opera . . . a page-turning narrative that explores its extraordinary characters and even more extraordinary cover-ups, evasions and dissemblage, reaching to the top of Italian political life." — The Scotsman, UK

The Voices Of Carlo Levi Le Voci Di Carlo Levi written by Joseph Farrell and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.
As a writer, Carlo Levi has had the misfortune to be known as the author of one book, Christ Stopped at Eboli, the account of his years of internal banishment by the Fascist authorities to a remote village in the south of Italy. That book was recognised as a masterpiece of anti-Fascist literature and as a sensitive investigation of the way of life of a people at the margins of European civilisation. It enjoyed enormous success in the post-war period not only in Italy but also in Britain and the USA, and has been continuously in print since its first publication. However, Levi was also a painter of some repute, a novelist, a journalist, a critic of art and society, a political commentator, and above all, a wholly idiosyncratic travel writer whose reports on the countries and regions he visited, including Sicily, Sardinia, Germany, the USSR and India, were also reflections on Italy. This book attempts to assess the totality of Levi's achievement.

Elsa Morante S Politics Of Writing written by Stefania Lucamante and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-18 with Literary Collections categories.
Elsa Morante’s Politics of Writing is a collected volume of twenty-one essays written by Morante specialists and international scholars. Essays gather attention on four broad critical topics, namely the relationship Morante entertained with the arts, cinema, theatre, and the visual arts; new critical approaches to her four novels; treatment of body and sexual politics; and Morante’s prophetic voice as it emerges in both her literary works and her essayistic writings. Essays focus on Elsa Morante’s strategies to address her wide disinterest (and contempt) for the Italian intellectual status quo of her time, regardless of its political side, while showing at once her own kind of ideological commitment. Further, contributors tackle the ways in which Morante’s writings shape classical oppositions such as engagement and enchantment with the world, sin and repentance, self-reflection, and corporality, as well as how her engagement in the visual arts, theatre, and cinematic adaptations of her works garner further perspectives to her stories and characters. Her works—particularly the novels Menzogna e sortilegio (House of Liars, 1948), La Storia: Romanzo (History: A Novel, 1974) and, more explicitly, Aracoeli (Aracoeli, 1982)—foreshadowed and advanced tenets and structures later affirmed by postmodernism, namely the fragmentation of narrative cells, rhizomatic narratives, lack of a linear temporal consistency, and meta- and self-reflective processes.

Fear Of Freedom written by Carlo Levi and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Art categories.
Carlo Levi was a painter, writer, and antifascist Italian from a Jewish family, and his political activisim forced him into exile for most of the Second World War. While in exile, he wrote Christ Stopped at Eboli, a memoir, and Fear of Freedom, a philosophical meditation on humanity's flight from moral and spiritual autonomy and our resulting loss of self and creativity. Brooding on what surely appeared to be the decline, if not the fall of Europe. Levi locates the human abdication of responsibility in organized religion and its ability to turn the sacred int othe sacrificial. In doing so, he references the entire intellecutal and cultural estate of Western civilization, from the Bible and Greek mythology to Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. This edition features newly published pieces of Levi's artwork and publication of the work. It also include an introduction that discusses Levi's life and enduring legacy. Fear of Freedom not only addresses a specific moment in history and a universal, timeless condition, but it is also a powerful indictment of our contemporary moral and political failures.
