This volume is a collection of essays written in honor of David Burr, emeritus professor at the Polytechnic University of Virginia (Blacksburg): a scholar who has spent a career researching and publishing on the multi-faceted phenomenon of the Spiritual Franciscans (late 13th-early 14th century) and, in particular, on the life and writings of Peter of John Olivi in southern France. Comunemente si intende per Pigneto il quartiere di Roma fuori Porta Maggiore posto tra le vie Prenestina, Casilina ed Acqua Bullicante, formatosi a partire dal 1870 e costituito da un insieme di trame insediative alquanto dissimili tra loro: il Casilino, il Prenestino, il Torrione, la Marranella, la borgata Galliano, l'Acqua Bullicante ed il Pigneto vero e proprio. La ricerca, condotta avvalendosi di una documentazione prevalentemente d'archivio, segue il filo rosso delle trasformazioni urbane, facendo emergere la dinamica delle forze sociali che si sono coagulate sul territorio dando vita ad un quartiere popolare in cui sono confluiti nel corso degli anni spezzoni di quel particolare movimento operaio romano legato ai pubblici servizi - ferrovieri, tranvieri e netturbini perlopiù - ma anche ceppi di operaismo più legato alle dinamiche della lotta di classe - i metalmeccanici della Tabanelli, le maestranze della farmaceutica Serono, i pastai della Pantanella, le operaie tessili della Viscosa... Ad uno sviluppo asimmetrico della crescita, che ha generato contraddizioni strutturali e rapporti sociali di sfruttamento-profitto, si è accompagnato anche un moderatismo sociale più legato alla presenza delle comunità imperniate attorno alle parrocchie, di Sant'Elena inizialmente, negli anni del primo dopoguerra, di San Barnaba, San Leone Magno e San Luca, nei decenni successivi. Gli anni del fascismo, con la politica rivolta ad acquisire consenso anche nel suburbio, rappresentano il momento in cui si consolidano le diverse parti del quartiere che permangono comunque distinte ed avulse dal contesto in attesa di una omogeneità sempre perseguita, ma mai realizzata. Il dopoguerra, con le difficoltà economiche connesse, portano con sé degrado urbano e marginalità sociale, in un contesto di sviluppo del territorio che non gli appartiene mentre il prevalere di interessi immobiliari determina il definitivo venir meno dell'opzione industriale, senza apportare la necessaria riqualificazione urbana. Soltanto in questi ultimi anni, grazie ad una diversa sensibilità urbana, si è avviato un lento e graduale processo di rinnovamento che stenta, però, ancora a decollare nella pienezza della sua potenzialità. Un processo difficile, comunque, che se non accompagnato da adeguate istanze partecipative, può comportare la trasformazione del tessuto identitario del quartiere. Carmelo G. Severino, dal 1981 architetto presso il Dipartimento Politiche della Programmazione e Pianificazione del Territorio del Comune di Roma. Si occupa della riqualificazione delle periferie ed è, tra l'altro, responsabile del Programma di riqualificazione urbana del Pigneto in corso di attuazione. Svolge attività di ricerca nel campo dei fenomeni territoriali, privilegiando le analisi storiche dei processi formativi delle realtà urbane. Autore di numerosi saggi ed articoli apparsi su riviste specializzate di settore, ha pubblicato: per l'editore Laterza, Crotone nella serie editoriale Le città nella storia d'Italia, per la Rubbettino editore, Città d'Europa, e per i nostri tipi, Enna. La città al centro e Capri. Il segno e il senso con Rachele Nunziata. Ha ottenuto il Premio della Cultura Sezione Storia locale per l'anno 2000, attribuito dalla Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri - Dipartimento per l'informazione e l'editoria.

Nel processo di trasformazione delle città in capitali e di creazione di strutture materiali e simboliche che facessero da sfondo alle nuove corti e al ruolo da esse assunto nello scenario europeo di età moderna, la città di Roma si distingue per il suo richiamo alla romanità e al suo ruolo di centro della cristianità: elementi che tracciano l’immagine della patria communis per quanti vi si vogliano stabilire o soggiornarvi temporaneamente. Iscrivendosi in un settore di studi che ha privilegiato il carattere ‘aperto’ delle città di Antico Regime guardando alla mobilità come ad un fattore intrinseco, i saggi qui raccolti ripercorrono i percorsi di individui e gruppi provenienti dagli Antichi Stati Italiani o d’Oltralpe attraverso la documentazione fornita dalle tante istituzioni che presiedevano all’accoglienza o che controllavano le identità confessionali e i comportamenti degli inurbati. La varietà della rete di istituzioni che accolsero i bisogni e le aspettative degli ‘immigrati’ costituisce la peculiarità di questo volume, in cui le indagini dei diversi autori, gli spazi e i tempi da essi investigati, compongono un mosaico che vuole dar conto, attraverso le quattro sezioni in cui è suddiviso, dei diversi sguardi che si posarono sui forestieri e del variegato e talora contraddittorio rapporto di costoro con la società d’accoglienza. Ciò nel tentativo di approssimarsi ad un’immagine della Roma moderna in cui convivono diversi tipi di società – quella globalizzata, quella corporata, quella clientelare – e in cui si sovrappongono e si intersecano, col fluire delle generazioni e delle ondate migratorie, identità molteplici.
