In unserer Gegenwart erleben Erzähltexte mit historischen Themen wieder eine Hochkonjunktur. Das ist im ästhetisch anspruchsvollen wie im populären Feld zu beobachten, ebenso im Bereich non-fiktionaler Sachtexte und der Familien- bzw. Auto-Biographie. Welche Formen, Interessen und Funktionen sind damit verbunden? Dies prüft, konzentriert auf deutschsprachige Texte, der von einem internationalen Beiträgerkreis verfasste Band. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf dem, was die gegenwärtige Situation seit ca. 2000 auszeichnet. Dies sind erstens die Hybridisierung etablierter Formen des Geschichtserzählens, etwa des klassischen oder avantgardistischen historischen Romans, und die Infragestellung der Fakt-Fiktions-Grenze und zweitens neuartige kulturelle Kontexte: veränderte gesellschaftliche Orientierungsbedürfnisse, die (angebliche) Krise des modernen Geschichtsverständnisses sowie das in unserer medialisierten Gegenwart gewachsene Bedürfnis nach ‚Erfahrung‘. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem inner- und außerhalb der Literatur auffällig beliebten Zeitreise-Motiv. Der Band liefert die erste umfassende Untersuchung romanhaften Geschichtserzählens in der deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur.

"Geschichte wird erzählt" lässt sich als Konsens in der geschichtstheoretischen Diskussion über die Darstellung von Geschichte festhalten. Darüber, wie Geschichte erzählt wird, besteht erkennbarer Dissens. Der vorliegende Band überführt die Analyse nationalhistoriografischer Narrative in eine erzähltheoretische Systematik und macht diese Texte in ihrer ästhetisch-literarischen Repräsentation, Erzählhaltung und -konvention als Konstrukt sichtbar. Das erarbeitete textstrukturelle Werkzeug zeigt auf, wie eine historiografisch-erzähltheoretische Analyse nationaler "Meisternarrative" entlang analytischer Kategorien funktionieren kann, um Geschichte(n) systematisch dekonstruierbar zu machen. Indem analytische Kategorien der Erzähltextanalyse für diese besondere Form des Erzähltextes adaptiert und/oder (neu) definiert und direkt auf das Korpus (Nipperdey, Wehler, Winkler) angewendet werden, kann gezeigt werden, wie Historiker:innen historiografisch erzählen. Die hier vorgelegte Narratologie historiografischer "Meisternarrative" liefert somit einen formal erweiterten Werkzeugkasten, der die theoretische Diskussion um die Frage, wie Geschichte erzählt wird, kategorial perspektiviert.

In the region known as Eastern and East-Central Europe, the framework provided by memory studies became highly valuable for understanding the overload of interpretations and conflicting perspectives on events during the twentieth century. The trauma of two world wars, the development of collective consciousness according to national and ethnic categories, stories of the trampled lands and lives of people, and resistance to the rule of authoritarian and totalitarian terrors—these trajectories left complex layers of identities to unfold. The following volume addresses the issue of identity as a pivot in studies of memory and literature. In this context, it addresses the question of cultural negotiation as it took shape between memory and literature, history and literature, and memory and history, with the help of contemporary authors and their works. A companion to contemporary German crime fiction for English-speaking audiences is overdue. Starting with the earlier Swiss “classics” Glauser and Dürrenmatt and including a number of important Austrian authors, such as Wolf Haas and Heinrich Steinfest, this volume will cover the essential writers, genres, and themes of crime fiction written in German. Where necessary and appropriate, crime fiction in media other than writing (TV-series, movies) will be included. Contemporary social and political developments, such as gender issues, life in a multicultural society, and the afterlife of German fascism today, play a crucial role in much of recent German crime fiction. A number of contributions to this volume will comment on the literary reflection of these issues in the texts.
